"Bloomberg's Mark Gurman incorrectly reported that the iPhone 17 Pro models would feature a "variable aperture system," a few days before Apple's event."

Maybe Gurman has somehow been getting his hands on iPhone 18 Pro prototypes, without realizing it

For those newer to this game, there have been "under screen biometrics in next year's iPhone" rumors since Touch ID was in its early days.

I wouldn't hold my breath.

I don't want razor-thin phones. I want a phone thick enough to toss a Touch ID power button on the side of it like the iPads have, preferably with a screen size similar to the iPhone SE minus the home button.
That sounds something like the rumors for the foldable iPhone, at least until you unfold it

I think the rumors about under-screen cameras "next year" started the moment the technology for doing that was first under development several years ago, then people got impatient for it after hearing about it

I wish they would bring TouchID back. FaceID struggles so much in the dark. With Touch ID I could unlock the phone before I pulled it out of my pocket.
FaceID has nothing to do with if the lights are on or off. Lolz

You're not wrong. Nothing wrong with bigger phones but smaller options would be nice. I feel like battery life killed the mini. Maybe had they waited till they could have improved on that more, and released it later, it would have been more successful?

I still use my 12 mini. While it works just fine the battery lasts no more long enough to get through a day with minimal usage. So I think it’s time to upgrade and I may get the 17 PRO

Skipping the iPhone for the first time since 2007.
No Mini.
No AI.
Siri is dead.
No redesign since 2011.
Ugliest Pro design ever.
Air is a 2mm thinner iPhone 16 with the same weight.
Post-Keynote Stocks tell everything.

I get that everyone has different tastes, but this year’s Pro color palette has absolutely nothing good. I don’t dislike the colors on the Air, but I don’t want that phone. I want a Pro, plain and simple. The orange is absolutely hideous, while the blue and silver are.. well.. blue and silver (boring). I know as one customer, Apple isn’t going to lose anything, and that they couldn’t care less, but this is the first year in quite sometime that I will not be upgrading.

I replaced my battery on my iPhone 12 pro this year in hopes to get to the iphone 20 as my next upgrade. A lot cheaper than upgrading I'll likely keep doing a battery replacement at least once for every model of smartphone I buy in the future. They just cost too much now to replace every 3 years.

Controlling the aperture with this sensor size is stupid. You need a big sensor to have a good bokeh and unfocus background. So that means that the sensors will be bigger?

The elderly in family are still asking whether a button is coming back.

Maybe Apple could boost sales by creating an under-screen dynamic button.

iPhone Retro.

Totally agree on all points 👍🏼

Meanwhile, I'm checking out Samsung Flips, tempted of their tech 😎
Apple just feel uhm boring 🥱

But my mini is absolutely fine another 1-2 years, so I'm not abandoning it yet ♥️
Waiting for Tim's retirement 👏

I hear you on Samsung Flips.

Never mind variable aperture, it's unnecessary for a mobile device...

Instead make the telephoto sensor 200 mpx, so that quality 16x "zoom" is possible. Look at Xiaomi 15 Ultra and Vivo's success in magnification. Rumours are mentioning about dual 200 mpx sensor coming with Vivo X300 series very soon!

I may be skipping the Pro from here on out.

It seems clear the Air is the "future" of Apple's design aesthetic. The Pro is going to be more of an Apple Watch Ultra-like "rugged" device, which appeals to me less.
If they’d make it a doesn’t-need-a-case device, like my Desire S used to be, that would be a great thing and solve a bit my longing for an 18 Mini which will not come.
Wait, my Mini with case is still only 68mm wide… Ok, the longing will stay…

I suspect the 18 and 18 pro to be one of the least significant upgrades in years if the foldable is delivered in 2026 because it has to be ALL ABOUT THAT in their marketing. It might be an idea to launch the foldable totally outside of a September iPhone event. Personally I think it will be 2027.
