In 2026 my MacBook Air M1 will be 6 years old.
I have a feeling it will still do all I want and need from a computer, but..., that might be the year when the temptation to upgrade overpowers common sense...![]()
How is mini LED awful? It looks terrific to meOLED is the best screen tech out there currently. Burn in protection has improved a lot since early panels. We've had OLED in devices for many years now.
I've owned countless devices with OLED and used them for thousands of hours and I've yet to see burn in.
The only device I have that doesn't have OLED is my M3 Air. I wish it had OLED but it seems if Apple were to put OLED in it would raise the cost of the Air quite a bit and it's their entry MacBook so they will be waiting until it's cheaper.
I have 2 OLED tvs, oled iphone, oled steam deck, oled switch, my apple watch is oled, my PC monitor is OLED. Despite all my other displays being OLED the display on the Air is probably one of the best LCD i've ever used. The only downside is the glowing blacks. It's not really an issue unless I've got a lot of dark areas on my screen like when watching something with black bars.
Mini LED is awful and the sooner MicroLED comes out to replace it then all the better. Also then people will stop worrying about OLED even though it's a non issue for 99% of people. MicroLED is the only display tech that will beat OLED.
Mini LED is awful
I second that reflection ...Right there with you man - my M1 MBA is still fantastic, but I've been really liking the new MBP, especially now that a matte display is an option. I think I can overcome temptation this time around, but it's getting harder and harder!
There were a lot of people in this forum who would disagree with you here. The annual updates on a computer is so stupid. I got a M1 MBP in 2021 and just ordered an M4 MBP thinking with 24GB of RAM and current processor should last like 5 years. There is no reason to do annual updates. Think about all the resources spent on incremental annual updates that could be invested in making revolutionary updates. Same with iOS. just release the full update when ready. Not spending almost a year of incremental updates.
Annual updates make a lot of sense re the production of computers. If there was a regular 2 or 3 year cycle for everything then there would be a boom and bust cycle of high sales with long wait times then low sales with producers having to lay off staff. There being a steady flow of improvements with people buying when they need something more gives a much more stable market for all concerned. The annual updates on a computer is so stupid. Hmmm…M5. Has me thinking of “The Ultimate Computer” from Star Trek TOS 😄.
