I'm a little lost here. Why is Skype popular? Doesn't FaceTime do the same thing (video calls)? And, if I already have an iPhone in my backpack why do I need another app to take calls?

Maybe for people that have "only use apple devices" as a requisite to befriend someone. For the rest of the world, no.

p.s., Skype is more than videocall, and videocall is silly anyway (for most purposes). After all, theres a reason why videocalls flopped like a decade ago (and no, it wasnt because Apple wasnt around). The only people that seem to truly take advantage of the technology are deaf people, but for them, videocall is about as revolutionizing as the phone was for us - so no wonder.

can i go back to the old Skype? before it became trendy, bloated and used by everyone in the world? no with MS involved all of the functionality will disappear :(

because most people (mostly Europeans) have Skype accounts from as early as 2006, when video conferencing was introduced. I know that I was Skyping to the US back then.

Really are you people that ugly you don't video conference at all. For me I video everyone, why because I can gauge if they are just pulling my leg or actually been truthful. To bad people are so down on their looks.

Video calls over 3G.

Cheap phone calls over WiFi. (so no roaming charges when you're out of the country)

Released prematurely, seriously? Do they realize how ridiculous that sounds after how long people have been waiting for this?

Didn't show up for me until I exited the App Store and closed it running in the background. Started it back up and it showed up. Had to agree to new Apple terms and conditions.

I just downloaded it from the uk store. Searched Skype iPad and installed straight from search results.

I just clicked the link frm the article. Downloaded it and it works fine. Use the link in the article.

Am I the only one who's not seeing it in the App Store?

Probably not. Note the edit to the story: "Update: Skype says the app was released prematurely, so they've pulled it." I just checked and its back up there, and successfully downloaded it. (It wouldn't download at first, so I rebooted my iPad and then it did. I'm up and running!

I just downloaded it from the US store so maybe they fixed it last night after it was pulled. I'm not sure how it will work but it's nice to have it as an option.

eh?

silly for who exactly?

Videocalling has been a total game changer for me and my family, we have a lot of relatives living all across the planet and if you think a video call is no different from a phone call then we (majorly) disagree.

My 2 year old daughter's quality of life has been upped considerably by having the ability to see her grandparents (as well as talk to them); in fact it's been great for her grandparents and us too.

I would also totally prefer to have a lot (if not the majority) of business related calls being made 'face to face' too, huge amounts of communication is non verbal and if someone wants to try and pull a fast one on me, I'd prefer they did it to my face.

Downloaded from the Swedish app store ..... I wonder if it will allow multiple confrence calls?

Is it just me, or does anyone else see

Update 2: As

That's all I can see from update 2, and it looks like a mistake to me, but I can see it both on my iPhone and my iMac, but no one else has commented on it...

Edit: The footer for the article doesn't seem right either... the lines on the side of the article just end, rather than wrap around the bottom, and the buttons at the bottom to comment or like the article aren't on the different background. All the other footers for the other articles look fine...

Ya that's all I see too

Haven't had a chance to download this yet.

Anyone get it and have review/report on if it's working properly?

Skype is cross platform. FaceTime is not.

The part that is missing from the post is:

Code:
<a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A//www.macerkopf.de/20110802-skype-fuer-ipad-steht-als-download-bereit&hl=en&langpair=auto|en&tbb=1&ie=UTF-8>

noticed by <i>Macerkopf.de</i></a>, <i>Skype for iPad</i> has returned to the App Store. Skype has yet to issue an official announcement about the release, however, so it is unclear if this is the official launch or if it is once again being made available prematurely.
