I used to know well over 100 people who used Skype.

Today, I only know 1.

Everyone seems to have moved to FaceTime and Messages.

Except those who use Windows - I do wish FaceTime simply worked cross platform, as I can't convince all my friends to buy Macs just so I can ditch Skype. Apple is ignoring the fact that not everyone uses Apple products. And FaceTime is so much better than Skype in terms of quality too, it would be great if it could just work for everyone.

The only issue I have with Skype is its power consumption. I'm not even hoping they've done something about it. Microsoft has the attitude for changing visuals to conceal poop under the hood.

When are they going to improve OneNote for Mac so it's finally usable? No quick annotations, no shapes (arrows etc.). Not even a goddamn "insert symbol" button.

When are they going to release Office for Mac that is not antiquated and has got at least half of Windows version's features?

MS Outlook 2011 is such a joke that I would be afraid to release it. There's a ton of almost free software with better Exchange integration.

For me Skype never really took off. Currently I have an unlimited plan for calls and people I occassionally call with abroad have an iPhone, so FaceTime works there.

UI and UX is terrible. So much wasted space, difficult to find things, no idea what half the button do in a call so you click an odd button hoping it brings up a chat box. They really know how to alienate they user base.

I stopped to use Skype since i got DDoS'd by some kids

It's so easy to get the IP of a skype user ... just google "Skype Resolver"
Second option. ;)

When will apple release a version of safari that isn't totally crappy on Windows ? And Messages ? And Facetime ? And every single thing that makes the apple ecosystem attractive ?
For the same reasons, I guess.

Support for Safari on Windows has been OFFICIALLY dropped long time ago. Messages, Facetime etc. has never been promised or given to Windows.

See the difference?

I use Skype for cross platform and the fact that I still have friends on Skype who were participants in the old Skypecasts. We often have a group audio call going and that's something that Facetime doesn't do. If it's one to one and my friend has an Apple device, we use FT because I agree it is better quality, just limited in functionality.

Skype has gone downhill in UX since Microsoft got into the act. It's no longer a P2P based platform and is now server based. I don't have to tell you why that happened. You can no longer reliably tell when someone is online or not because Microsucks wants you to always be reachable. I will never ever purchase another dime of Skype credit.

More lost space

Now you can list even fewer number of contacts on the sidebar/favorites compared to equivalent space of pre-7.0 version. What I can't understand is why they don't at least allow for a more compact view in preferences.

This is pretty sucky on my 27in imac. I run with skype maximized and until v7 it was just fine. Now at the same settings, the chat messages are focused in the inner 33% vertical space leaving 66% of my screen as wasted dead space.

You can grab the chat area and enlarge it with the mouse.

Honestly, I just want it to look like iChat. Or work with iChat. Er, Messages, whatever you call it. Skype isn't use very much anymore, but I still have to use it on very rare occasions.

Does hangouts do group chats properly yet? We looked at it a year or so ago and couldn't figure out how to do it. We use google apps for docs/sharing and skype for talking (groups). Such a pain to need two different tools for the same context.

I use it for a lot of meetings, with up to 6 people and it seems to be a lot better than it was. You should give it a try.

Wow there are so many whiners when it comes to UI change. iOS 7, Windows 8, Skype.. the fact is this: Skype is being actively developed by Microsoft and they're doing a good job too.

For all its warts, if there's one thing Microsoft is consistently better at than Apple ever was, it is internet services.:apple:

The difference is that Microsoft is playing well with others and Apple still isn't?

Oh - I guess you're right but Microsoft certainly hasn't improved Skype.

You're kidding, right?

I prefer company not to release product if it's subpar piece of junk. Not to mention, Office for Mac costs money which is ridiculous with all it's limitations.

And yet Office for Mac still has a better Excel than Numbers. And it should be updated soon, so there's always that. As for releasing sub-par products or none, Apple doesn't have the right approach. It isn't that they won't release sub-par, it's that they won't even try to release anything. Aside from your Office problem, which is apparently being fixed in the new version, which product is sub-par to you?

You mean a better "spreadsheet app?" That's very debatable.
I'm an accounting professional and I have nor seen anything Excel can do that Numbers can't. This includes 500 level Statistics classes normally taken by pre doctoral students.
Pivot tables maybe? But that's more of a formatting issue.
