RIP Skype, had used it for 15+ years, even currently to communicate with some. Office used it in past to communicate before moving to teams. Skype was never run properly even before MSFT to make income. Now, too many ways to communicate but finding Telegram still a winner for privacy, Signal for even more, Teams for general chat

Microsoft = quitters. Rather than working on the product and making it better they just give up because they just don't have the culture to make their products great.

The Windows phone for example could have been something great and a potential alternative between iOS and Android. They fail at projects and yet Apple has made similar products great. What does that say about the company? Of course there's a big difference between the Windows phone and Skype but the aftertaste is the same.

For nostalgia reasons, Microsoft's application graveyard can be found here:

I feel bad for all of the innovative small companies Microsoft bought out only to be folded shortly afterwards. RIP.

As Microsoft finalizes the shutdown process, existing Skype users will have until May 5 to migrate their data and contacts to Teams or seek alternative solutions.
Can I make calls to a land line with Teams? What happens to my Skype credit?

I've never really had to use any of them much, thankfully as I hate video calls. But I never understand why Zoom just popped up seemingly out of no where during Covid for all the mainstream people to use instead of the already established Skype. Suddenly then Teams appeared as well.

I don't really understand why they're all the same thing working in the same way - they're equally good/bad as each other. Plus you've got video calling now on every single messaging app, Facetime, Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp, WeChat, Snapchat, probably Instagram somewhere?
Zoom was free to install and didn’t charge anything at all.

Such a difficult time using Teams--but if you are a musician, you really need to use Zoom's music features.

Skype was a revolution when International calls were too expensive. They still could have been the best if it wasn't owned by Microsoft. I am a regular user of Signal and WhatsApp. They are popular because it is easy to setup and use. No need to login with passwords and two stage verification etc. Skype could have done it long ago. But Microsoft thought that their way is always best.

I’ve been using Skype all day during work 5 days a week for the last 17 years, this kinda sucks lol. Only ever for text based chat, we use it within the company as we are all very spread out and a lot of us remote

Wait, what?! This is the first I have heard of this. I still use Skype fairly frequently for one thing: making international calls to people/numbers that aren’t on FaceTime or WhatsApp.

Skype is massively cheaper than phone company rates for this. Like 50-100x cheaper in some cases. And importantly, numbers you are calling through Skype see correct caller ID, you don’t come up as some suspicious ghost call! And the call quality is usually great.

Can anyone recommend a good alternative VOIP app for making international calls, if Skype shuts down?
I use it for international calls too. I’ll probably switch to Google voice.

My workplace is massive, and we only have Skype on the computers to call with. I'm curious where they'll go as they're generally slow to adapt.

Teams consistently has better closed captions for me than Zoom, so I prefer it over that.

Give Google Voice a try, if you are in the US. It works on Windows, Mac, and have dedicated apps on iOS and Android.

With all the discussion around Zoom and Team, it seems Skype's ability to make calls to landline phones domestically and internationally has become an afterthought. Maybe some Zoomers don't even know what landline is.

I use Skype with friends for our weekly group call. Zoom is not a solution for me since I don't have access to it and I gather one must pay to use it? Besides which, a couple of my friends would have great difficulty in connecting via email link due to their VERY limited tech knowledge. FaceTime is not feasible since I need a cross-platform for friends not using Apple products.
I have exact the same problem! We are 3 friends who meet regularly on skype, two are absolutely limited in tech knowledge and one has no Apple products. It’s the first time I heard Skype shutting down. One friend uses it to landline calls to friends and family worldwide. None of us have teams or zoom. Promises to become an interesting spring!

I'm not in the US unfortunately. But anyway, the nice thing about Skype is that it works from anywhere, and uses your existing number for caller ID. My understanding is that Google Voice provides its own phone number, which is not what I'd want anyway?

They brought MSN Messenger back from the dead. Perhaps in the future we’ll see a Skype revival.
