Yeah, whether it's limited to WiFi or not, is the big question.

Not that it won't be nice simply having compatability with other video Skype devices, but 3G would be handy.

It's not the big question, it's an answered one. (3G is supported.) People need to learn how to read.

Unless I missed FaceTime for Mac/Win coming out, will this be the first iPhone-to-PC video chat?

Yahoo Messenger can already do iPhone to PC video chat.

Better late then never. No?

Agree. And "late" is only valid when someone takes a loss from it not arriving on time. Skype had a lot of maneuvering to do other than getting the code working.

Apple Facetime is published as an open standard and it's connection to WiFi has held it back via AT&T edict that video data would overload their network. I'm sure Skype has been doing a lot of infrastructure work to minimize network impact. This is not Angry Birds.

Time for Rule 34 on mobile video conferencing!

It's about time... Been waiting for that for ages now.
Video over 3G? Would love it, but my iPhone 4 has problems dealing with voice over 3G in Skype saying network speed is average.

Make the most of it. Soon the carriers will be penny pinching by charging a monthly / extra data fee for Skype, YouTube and other services.

Nope, Yahoo messenger app does iPhone to PC, iPhone to iPhone, PC to PC.

And I think there is a Mac OSX beta out already for iChat to iPhone, and they supposedly are working on a Windows version that can do the same.

Bout time!

If this and other apps will work over 3G, why aren't we allowed to use Facetime over 3G?

A reason to buy an iPad?

An iPad with a front facing camera with a Skype App may make me think about buying an iPad. I could also see people getting one for parents who currently do Skype to Skype with their grandkids.

Same here. When the iPad gets a frontfacing camera I might need to buy one.

Hopefully they incorporate some features found in the android app e.g. real time info on call rates. Also make video calling work over 3G.

Great, now make Skype for Mac beta not-suck and we'll talk. That interface is horrid.
I think the reaction on the Skype forums has told the developers they've wasted their time making the Mac beta just like the Windows GUI.

I will be seeking to use an alternative chat/webcam protocol if the Skype Mac Beta isn't improved. I've been waiting for an excuse to use iChat.

im confused....

I thought you could video call with skype mobile on ios, and android and blackberry, for years?

I hope FaceTime and Skype learn from one another.

The benefit of FaceTime is that it works off your email address and it's always on. I don't need to launch an app or sign in. I'm available the same way my phone is available. Skype is cross platform and works over 3G. Both have a ways to go before we can just write off the idea of video calling.
