This is classic furniture design by an industrial designer.

Furniture designers don't try and design cars...industrial designers should steer clear of furniture.

And for those of you who think these two disciplines are one in the same...they're not. My university offers separate degrees in furniture design (following the Nordic tradition), and industrial and strategic design.

When I read it and it said holes for ventilation I was hoping it would be more like tiny holes that shoot out air like an air hockey table but then I saw the picture and thought, "that's stupid."

Also, the cup holder is a terrible idea. What happens if you go to set your drink down and you're not paying attention so part of it lands on the desk portion and it tips over and spills all over your desk?

Flat surfaces have worked well for us for so long for a reason.

How could bamboo be impure, I wonder.

Highly-specialized products have a way of being inflexible and of becoming obsolete within a few years. Products change sizes and interfaces. As others have pointed out, the holes/grooves would quickly trap grook, which would be hard to clean out. Those organizer pegs would also break in a heartbeat.

Minimalist. Handsome. Impractical. Rigid. Planned obsolescence.

Btw, why the mousepad? Seems superfluous.

No. Just No.

So it seems to me that this was designed exactly for the needs of the person who designed it. And not with any thought for general use. Now there happened to be a bunch of people who need (or think they need?) exactly the same set up. But it certainly isn't the majority.

It is, by most accounts, an ergonomic, functional, and stylistic step backwards.

And funny enough, from my perspective, it flies in the face of the simple, or minimalist look that Jobs/Ive/etc seem to have pursued (at least until iOS 7, anyhow...)

Won't those holes be uncomfortable on your forearms when you type? I tend to move my Apple bluetooth keyboard toward me and away from me depending on how lazy I'm feeling, which would mean exposing most of the holes.

And like others have said, when the keyboard or Macbook isn't there, you can't use it as a regular desk.

Hey! That's what the holes are really for. If you spill your drink, the liquid will go through the holes and safely onto your lap instead of into your laptop or keyboard.

Why do people think that "Handcrafted" standard parts are desirable?

Handcrafting is only important if there is something unique about each unit that the crafter produces. The legs should be machine crafted to make sure they are as close to identical as possible.

A handcrafted sculpture would be nice, but desk legs? Way to raise the price unnecessarily.

Agreed, this seems to be one of the most ill thought out products I have seen. Also way over priced for what it is and functionally flawed in many ways.

I've got Bluelounge's StudioDesk, a lot better designed and great quality.

Can highly recommend it.

While I don't like the style of this desk personally it actually looks like a very well thought out design and looks well constructed. Makes SlatePro look kind of ridiculous in comparison.

Remember these?

Reminds me a little of my 1984-vintage MacTable(nice picture of one below):

I think it looks cool. I'm buying one (without the holes--thankfully that is an option). I'm just hoping that the phone slot will be big enough if iPhones get bigger. It looks like there is plenty of room though. The desk is a bit overpriced but I like it.
