Hey guys, quick question. i'm new to macs. i just got a macbook pro 15.4-inch about two weeks ago after my toshiba died. (it lasted me well, but it had its day.)

i just stumbled upon these rumors that a new line is coming out. obviously the ivy bridge processor is going to be faster, but i see people debating stuff about dedicated graphics cards, etc.

i guess my simple question is: based on the rumors so far, will the next generation of macbook pro 15.4" have any deficits in performance (graphics-wise or anything else) compared to the current line?

i understand that the optical drive is being ditched and i'm fine with that because i never use CDs, but i got the vibe from some of these posts that people were griping about other things that they may be removing or reducing in the new line?

i have 30 days to return my macbook so if it's worth waiting i might as well do that, but not if the next line is sacrificing other aspects of performance just to run quicker or something. i would love if someone could give me a layman's overview of everything. i apologize for my ignorance but i'm not too good in terms of understanding all the different specs, etc.

cheers!

are there any estimates on pricing for these new models? I am saving up money and just need to know what I should be aiming for ...

Probably going to be around the same price as the current models. Maybe a little jump. Then you have to adjust for whatever upgrade you might be interested in. I'd say $2,000 +/- $500

ah ok ... not too bad then :D

Well I am just guessing, and it's a wide range. Depending on what size and options you want. I do wonder if hard drive prices will have any effect on the prices of the new models. It didn't seem like the prices changed much even though in the past year hard drive prices went through the roof (they are on their way back down now).

All I need is RAM and battery life on mine ... that way I can surf the web and type on it. Plus having to carry it around will be nice since it is all lightweight.

just thinking ... will apple raise prices on these to make up for kinda phasing out the 17". like move the 15" halfway between a 15" price now and the 17" price now. then the new 13" would do the same with 13" and 15".

I've had my Macbook since 2006, and every year I've held out on buying a new computer since I've always wanted the newest, best, whatever. Considering that this might be the time to finally upgrade.

However, anyone wonder whether the fact that this will be the first MBP release since Jobs' death (besides that the last MBP came out, what, a few weeks afterwards?), there might be a lower standard / more bugs / issues, etc? Considering maybe getting the current MBP instead...? Just a thought.
