can u read ??? NO 3G SUPPORT ! WI-FI ONLY !
for 30 bucks ? and only support the new models ?

NO THANKS.

**** slingmedia , ill sell my sling AV and get another brand.

They mentioned Jailbreaking because there's an app that lets you use WiFi-only apps over 3G. So don't call someone out for not reading if you don't know what they're referring to.

I’m wondering if this $29.99 price tag is out of date and the one that Sling submitted when they thought the app would work over 3G/EDGE. I really can’t imagine Sling expecting that people will actually pay $29.99 for Wi-Fi only. I’d be willing to pay $29.99 for the app if it works over the cell networks, but probably just $9.99 for a Wi-Fi only version.

Just give the damn software away or charge a nominal fee - it's bad enough that the older hardware is excluded from the party without p*ssing the other Slingbox owners off too !

"legacy Slingboxes, which include the Classic, AV, and TUNER, will work with the application but will not be officially supported" They have to stop supporting older product at some point. All companies do.

Talk about bittersweet! SlingPlayer on the iPhone? 'Freakin outstanding. 3G only? Disappointing.

I wonder if the Jailbreak crew will have a workaround for this?

Do you even know what you are saying? It's WI-FI only.

Sad~!!!!

Can I say Jail Break! thought Iphone was going to be the best way to go!!!! I WAS WRONG!!! if I can only use it in a WI-FI only mode, most likely there is a TV at that location as well... What do I need this app for if there is a TV near. This app is so I can watch TV walking down the street or seating in traffic!!!! Why buy it????? So sad!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have the original iPhone and I've resisted buying the 3G. This certainly will not coax me into upgrading anytime soon. My 1st Gen iPhone with Edge and a $20 per month data plan is good enough for me.

Geek factor aside, there really would be no reason for me to use slingplayer on my iphone. I don't commute or have that kind of down-time where I would really use it. I use my slingcatcher when I am at my 2nd home, but I have a dsl connection there.

We will have to see what happens with the announcement.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5H11a Safari/525.20)

That seems like a ridiculously high price for an iphone app... but I guess Sling can charge that much, since they have a niche app. Awell.

Just wifi? Probably because AT&T doesn't want that kind of bandwidth clogging up its already taxed lines.

I'd say definitely. There was an article in yesterdays' WSJ about how the iPhone has turned into a double edged sword for ATT b/c iPhone users use exponentially more bandwidth than other smartphone users. The bandwidth use is costing them more $ than estimated but more importantly as you note it's clogging up the system which is why it can be so slow at times. Good motivation for ATT to get LTE up and running.

100% ATT. This could very well backfire on them. This would make jailbreaking attractive again. Targeting a specific phone and not others, especially one that has brought them so many new customers is a slap in the face.

They would be better set to limit the bps on the app rather then ban it all together...

Thank god my contract expires next month :)

I think he is talking about a jailbreak only app that tricks your phone into thinking it is on wifi when it is only on 3g.

my classic AV is 1 year old !!!

I had an app that streams internet radio at 128k get rejected for using too much cellular data. Once that happened my hopes of Sling working over 3G pretty much ended. Even with crazy compression, it's still probably too much based on Apple's idea of "too much." But with the high cost of ownership ($30 app + hardware costs) there won't be that many people using it. It's just silly.

I really hope I'm right and that the APIs in 3.0 will allow them to release this over cell networks in an update. Orb made changes to go from WiFi only to 3G, here's to hoping Sling can do it too.

Lame. I bought orb about a week ago and it is able to stream live tv on Edge fairly well. I hope that the Hava iPhone app will be allowed to use 3G/Edge.

Dumb

If it is a bandwith issue, then why do Blackberries (with as many and likely a lot more units out there) have 3G sling? I know that AT&T would rather have people buy Blackberries (I am sure Apple takes a bigger cut than RIM), but why would Apple go along? All Apple has to say is "you have to give us equal treatment"(why still no tethering too?). They are intentionally making their competitors more attractive by denying some of the coolest features other phones have (and not because the iPhone CAN'T do these things).

They're actually making the idea of having a 3G netbook and a bare bones cell phone attractive. You pay through the nose for the iPhone plan, and if you are not a big phone user (like me), it is a little painful to pay that much for the phone side of things. A 3G netbook(or even another portable 3G device without restrictions) and a cheap Verizon plan might fit my needs a lot better AND cost me a lot less.

I love my phone, but if it doesn't do what I want it to I don't care how easy it is to use.

Wow, good to know, thanks.

In all seriousness, am I being unreasonable in my thinking that this app is considerably overpriced for lacking this basic functionality? I know it's not Sling's fault and I know they normally sell their mobile apps for $29.99, but you've got to think they'd make much more money selling their app for $9.99, continuing to lobby AT&T/Apple for 3G functionality, and then provide an upgrade path when iPhone OS 3.0 comes out this summer (which allows upgrading).

HAHAAHAH OMG this is laughable!

$30, forced slingbox upgrade, wi-fi only!

WOW, I was a big supporter of slingbox for a long time. Screw you slingbox! I'll stick with hulu and other online sites for now.

The Wi-Fi only is a shame, though I'll probably only be using it over Wi-Fi, so I can live with that.

But $30? That's a stupid price.

If it supported 3G, I go buy a SlingBox on my lunch break today. Dangit!

Also, you would think they would price it lower as it would most likely increase SlingBox sales.
