Really a bummer if it ends up true. I am all for $30 for the app but WiFi only just makes it useless. At that rate I'll keep using my Sling on my laptop but screw spending $30 for the same functionality just on my phone. Makes me wish AT&T would just block it on all devices. It's not fair that WinMo and BB users get to use it but iPhone users get the shaft. Total BS.

Anybody happen to know the name of this app?
sling player mobile

I think skinnylegs was asking about the jailbreak app which tricks wifi only apps into working over 3G. The correct answer is VoIPover3G, an app available through Cydia which can apparently trick any application into thinking it's on wifi when really the phone only has a cellular connection.

Sling Player Mobile is the app we want to trick in this case.

VoIPover3G is the app and it should do the trick.

Jailbreak and use the above mentioned app. It works for all the other ones and should for this as well if it really will be limited to Wi-Fi only. Basically it works by tricking the phone to thinking it is on Wi-Fi, when it is really only on 3G network. :D

"most of us" is a gross exaggeration. And "lowest numbers ever" isn't true. You mean to tell me that fewer people are watching TV today then in 1970? i find that very hard to believe ;) And many people don't have internet connections fast enough to stream TV via the web.

actually that is true. the numbers are lower than 1970!
thats why the big 7 media are scared to see the number go down.

on the flip side movie viewership is way up!

**** AT&T! I am tired of their ********. If they actually put money into their network instead of pocketing the cash, this wouldn't be a problem. I live in NYC of all places and can't get good reception. It will be a great day when the iPhone loses exclusivity and AT&T goes out of business. They are the worst of the four major carriers.

This app is useless. I carry my laptop wherever I go and I'm not going to pay $30 bucks to sap battery power from a phone that already has battery issues.

WiFi-only will still be handy when you're in the... errrm... reading room... at home, but don't want to miss a show. Or if you're laying in bed and your wife wants to watch her show on the big screen.

I'm almost glad it's not on the ATT 3G network. Can't even imagine how slow that puppy would be with tens or hundreds of thousands of new Sling users.

Wtf

WiFi Only = Bull*****.

Period.

No excuse.

Why do I have an iPhone again? So I can be prevented from doing something blackberry users can do?

F* you sling, F* you AT&T, and F* you Apple if this is true.

F*ing retarded.

No sale!

I had been looking forward to this release since the announcement in January so I would have the freedom to watch from my DVR either at the gym or on the train on my commute to work. Without 3G support this application is useless for me. While ATT offers 3G support for other handsets with Sling Media capabilities, singling out iPhone users and relegating us to wifi only is yet another reason why so many users look forward to the day the iPhone is no longer exclusive to ATT.

we just have to test when the app checks for wifi... i know some apps that on load they check if you are on wifi but if you move out of wifi the 3g network picks it up and still works.

All I've ever wanted on my cell phone is the ability to live stream all of my cable channels. When Slingbox promised to do this over 3G, I was very excited. However, streaming over only wi-fi is almost useless to me.

I have been very excited at the prospect of replacing my Day-1 iPhone with the new yet-to-be-released iPhone and putting the sling client on it. However, that the sling client will be wi-fi only is absurd. Blackberry's sling client can be used over 3G. I am now seriously considering ditching my iPhone for a Blackberry. AT&T's constant restrictions on what can be streamed over their "unlimited" data plan are ridiculous.

Orb is in beta for the MAC. You can easily go and download the beta yourself, the functionality is there. Orb has been great for me. Sling is cool but I can't justify spending that much on hardware that does what orb does for free.

IIRC, EyeTV has had the feature for a few versions now that allows you to stream directly from your computer to the iPhone.

The terms of service for AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint specifically say that you can't stream video.

It sucks that AT&T is in a position to PREVENT this from happening on the iPhone, but it's not like they're giving a free pass to BlackBerry users. (They'd just have to go out of their way to track those people down).

hello this is the rest of the world calling the USA - any news on other carriers outside of the USA who might be OK with Sling on 3G ... ?

:)
