"F***ing Apple!" people cry. Do you really think Apple has anything to do with this? If they are the ones who told them no to Wifi and Edge, it is specifically because AT&T said no. Apple wouldn't care to limit it otherwise, so direct your animosity where it belongs.

That said, "F***king AT&T!"

And $29 is a ridiculous price for this app. It might have been somewhat respectable with Wifi and Edge, but as is, for customers who have already bought their Slingbox hardware, that's just way too much...

Sad, but I'll get my redemption

First off, all three companies are being stupid. Sling for charging $30, when without 3G, the app is almost worthless. AT&T for holding a double standard with the iPhone, when other phones support slingplayer over 3G. It's not like everyone who has (or will get) a slingbox will be watching it all the time. I only do it in rare instances when I'm on the road and I need to watch live sports. Everything else can wait. And Apple for being babies.

HOWEVER, this isn't that big of a deal, because if you have a jailbroken phone, you'll be able to watch over 3G, just like you can make calls over 3G with Skype. On top of that, because of how RIDICULOUS the pricing is, in no way in hell am I paying for this, and I'll wait until it's cracked. That way I get my redemption. Screw you Sling, AT&T, and Apple.

I thought this was a freakin' free market.

be carefull some people are willing to pay 200 bucks for this app...
:p

Sounds like a good case for net neutrality.

so **** at&t , people should make a massive move to other companies.
leave tham alone with no users, then they have a reason to not allow streaming over 3g , they will not have users..

;)

Really? AT&T is giving iPhone users the shaft for not allowing them to break the same rules that you are?

If I'm breaking the rules and it isn't allowed, why don't they shut off 3G on my sling player mobile for my Blackberry?

im sorry rich man , dont talk ******** please...
not everyone is stupid enough to pay 200 bucks for an app like that.
if you would , maybe you are not that smart. people are already complaining about the 30 bucks price , and you come with that ******** "if you cant afford, you dont need it" please...

I'm not rich either you geek.

Just because it's released doesn't mean you are ENTITLED to it. It's a luxury to be able to watch tv wherever you are, but definitely not a need.

$30 is not that much, give me a break. If you complain about $30 for an app that is a one time fee, then you are freakin' cheapstakes. And I assume you must punch yourself everytime you buy a video game for $50 or a dvd for $20. Hell, don't even bother going to the movies and paying $12 for a ticket and spending almost $25 for a one time movie with a date.

Oh wait...you probably are single and alone and bootleg everything. You better come alot harder if you are trying to insult me, i'll make you look stupid every time. Idiot.

Blackberry does and Palm soon will. And believe me when I say that they will use this as a marketing point. Also how long do you think before Android will allow this on T-Mobile to market it against the iPhone?
Didn't Google pull the Android app that allowed tethering thru the G1 on T-Mobile's request? I'm doubting they'd allow SlingPlayer.

I'm curious to see how much veto power the carriers get in the BlackBerry, Palm, and Windows Mobile upcoming "app stores".

I have 2g with no data plan. So this is perfect me with my SB Tuner. :D.
I'm sure jailbreakers will come up with Voiceover3G for Slingplayer and everyone will be happy. Hopefully the price will come down a bit after it's released. I'm super stoked about this since I don't have to carry my PocketPC just for Slingplayer anymore. Yay!

If I'm breaking the rules and it isn't allowed, why don't they shut off 3G on my sling player mobile for my Blackberry?
For the same reason you don't get pulled over and issued a ticket every time you speed in your car. They have to catch you first. They're not monitoring every single BlackBerry Bold every minute that it's turned on to see if its streaming SlingPlayer.

Do you even know what you are saying? It's WI-FI only.

Do you even know what you're saying. Obviously you have no idea what you're talking about. He said JAILBREAK. If you jailbreak u can use sling over edge / 3G.

Just like skype. In appstore it's wifi only but if you jailbreak your iPhone you can use it over edge and 3g. Next time know what u are talking about before u think ur right

Can you feel that? The greed and corporate control in the air? Bandwidth limitations on networks is getting out of hand. Limiting device options is ridiculous. Charging for applications to work with hardware you already own is just plain greedy. The whole thing stinks. Everyone gets a FAIL on this - AT&T, Sling & Apple.

Yes, please...go away with another carrier and troll their forums.

Don't just be all talk....do the walk.

'll admit, my attitude is immature...

but sling got what they deserved. That BS of them requiring an upgrade, plus $30 for the app was motivated by greed. Now, as a wifi only app, this is totally worthless. I don't know why anyone would pay that kind of money for an app when most of the time you're in a consistent wifi zone would be in your house. The fact that they are STILL charging $30 bucks for an app that you can only use via wifi shows how greedy they are...They're basically saying:" Ya, you can't use this the way we promised you could, and we know a lot of people have upgraded because we said older model's wouldn't work, but we're still going to charge you full price on the app just because we can..." F-YOU SLING!!!!

After i saw that the older slings would not work on the iphone i gave up on sling and almost routed against them getting this app approved 3G (see above disclaimer).

also, what a commentary on AT&T's network. Do you think they sold apple a bill of goods when they were bidding for the right to have the iphone? did apple do enough investigation on AT&T's network to know that there could be bandwidth issues down the road?

a lot of things going on behind the scenes here....truth be told, this really is too bad. Greed, incompetence (AT&T), and perhaps a lack of knowledge (Apple), have ruined what easily would have been the biggest thing to hit the iphone.

That wouldn't have to monitor it all day. They just tell sling to not allow it to connect over 3G on the versions for Blackberry. Like they just did on the iPhone version.

I love the double standard here.

The app store was just a controlled way to opening up the platform to developers. This is an example of the kind of control the app store allows Apple and AT&T. They put some thought into the app store and I can see why they went down this road.

If they are using the app store as a way to prevent people violating TOS like they have been doing thus far, I get it. It sucks but I get it.

What's odd is that apps like Orb are able to stream over the cellular network.

Maybe this decision was based purely on numbers. They estimated how many people might hookup to SPM and figured that the network wouldn't be able to handle it.

It seems that releasing an official list of specifications for app store apps is just not a viable option for apple at this point. Many apps up for review will probably fall into some sort of category but there might be an exception that comes along ever so often (i.e. an app that streams over 3G but happens to have a HUGE user base behind it). Now apple has to consider that, but having an official spec list out prevents them from rejecting the app (if it meets spec). So apple is then powerless to prevent this app from going on sale and then there goes the network.

I just don't think the app approval process can be all that simple. The existence of the app store makes this a whole different animal.

I agree with all of your points. However, I dont think this app is going to work with a cracked version. Pretty sure its going to connect to slings servers to verify your key/login. If that is the case then they will be able to disable cracked version or be able to tell that you're using a cracked version. I could be wrong with how its going to connect since I havent used sling mobile in about 3 years with an old phone.

I'm going to guess there will be an update shortly after the release of OS 3 that will enable 3G. OS 3 will have a newer and better way of streaming, and I think they will take advantage of that.

As for the price, I bet it will come down. I'm waiting.

if this app works like all the rest, it will be up and cracked on a website soon after it is released so that you can use it free on your jailbroken iPhone... also, i believe there is already a jailbroken app out there that tricks the iPhone into thinking that it's on WiFi but really using 3G/E...

edit:
didn't know mobile slingplayers required keys... hopefully a workaround is developed

if that was true , they would say something other than let people talk **** all those days until 3.0 arrive.

Good lord, do you not understand that AT&T can PREVENT companies from releasing an iPhone application that uses 3G, and on the same note, AT&T has NO POWER to prevent companies from releasing apps on other devices?

iPhone applications get installed from one source -- the iPhone App Store. If AT&T doesn't want an app that uses 3G (like Sling) on their network, they tell Apple to not approve the app. Sling has NO CONTROL over that process.

With BlackBerrys, Windows Mobile, etc, Sling has TOTAL CONTROL over how they distribute their SlingPlayer app. AT&T can't stop them.
