While I do think I'd look hideous and I wouldn't want to see it on the iMac, it can be done, and it can work well. The PS2 can tilt on its side and the tray works just fine. So can my PC. CD breaking from a fall? Common. ;)

Like what has been said, there are many reasons behind why Apple prefers slot-loading drives. Though, I really only see the following two as the leading reasons.

1. Much more compact.

and reason number two (this being Apple) is by far the most important-

2. Streamlined design. Very sleek. You simply pop the disc in, and hit a button for it to come out. No messy tray detail, and the fabric flaps keep all potential dust and particles from entering the drive.

Bottom line, the reason is: style. :)
 
I prefer slot loading drives in laptops, but the drive in our family Cube lost the strength to eject discs after two years and we had to use tweezers to get them out. My old G4 TiBook got noisy while ejecting, but it always worked fine.
