I was having very slow sms keyboard performance with a 1st gen phone and 2.0 - turned off then on again, and now seems to be fine. Hope it lasts...

UPDATE: the SMS lag is back - bollards!!

I'm having this problem on my 3G iPhone intermittently. Its not just the keyboard though, occasionally the screen won't respond, nor any of the buttons. If I leave it a minute it seems to catch up with itself.

Does this just sound like a bug likely to be fixed, or should I be returning it?

I've got the same problem. Most of my hang ups appear in my email when im trying to delete. I hit the delete button and it doesnt respond for a good 5-7 seconds.

I had horrible lag in emails and sms. After removing a few apps that I realized I don't ever touch (the novelty phase passed lol), and a restart, my iPhone runs smooth again.

Turn off keyclick sound effect

I've notice that keyboard responsivenes is greatly improved with the keyclick sound effect disabled. This was likewise true on my old version 1 iphone.

I have an issue with delete key.

When I use delete key (tap once, not holding it down) I have noticed several times that it gets stuck and starts deleting everything until I tap delete again.

Is this a feature?

I've been having a lot of lag issues on my iPhone 3G, version 2.0 (5A345), and since disabling keyclick, I am back to speedy typing.

Restore your firmware to the later version

My 2G has keyboard lag on the latest firmware sometimes...texting today as an example...

So he should upgrade to the latest firmware to address the problem even though you are still reporting the problem exists in the latest firmware? HUH?

I'm on firmware rev 347, I have always had keyclicks disabled (can't stand the annoying noise) and have plenty of lag - excessive at times. I notice that when finger scrolling through my phone book it gets chunky sometimes. I also regularly double tap the home key to quickly pull up the audio controls to pause music. Sometime it acts like a single click (just shows the home slider to unlock without showing the audio controls) and sometimes when I hit play/pause it doesn't take.

Now today mine developed a new "feature". I was on the home screen and went to flick over to the second page. Instead, it rebooted (Apple screen for 30 seconds or so, then back to normal). Yeah! My phone is special!

Yep, experiencing the same.

I've posted here and on Apple forums about SMS app being the most common culprit, but the problem carries over to Safari as well.

"P" and Backspace go dead, non-responsive...then when they come alive they get stuck and repeatedly fire...other times keyboard sensitivity is all whacked, I press "O" and "I" fires, etc.

Nothing but keyboard problems since I got my iPhone 3g yesterday. Taking it it to a Genius today. Will post back my results from the visit.

its a software process problem. Mac Genius won't know what to do. now that I think of it, Mac Genius are from it.

Actually, mine did the exact same thing today while I was on the subway. I was on the homescreen and flicked to go to the second page of my apps and it rebooted. I got a bit worried because it locked the simcard and asked for my pin number to unlock and since it's a new phone, I didn't think I had it memorized. Just by luck, I tried a code I though felt familiar and it was correct (phew!).

...well, now that your's does it too I don't feel so special about mine. :D

Very slow to the point of being unbelievably annoying

I was trying to text 2 messages today and it took minutes because of the ridiculous lagging

It really is getting unbearable

Both my brother and I have experienced this same problem on our iPhone 3Gs--the keyboard responds extremely slowly to typing while in the SMS app. (Oddly enough, it only seems to be the SMS app and nothing else.)

The other thing that I noticed was that I would be in the Phone app looking at Contacts and sometimes the screen won't respond at all. I would try scrolling the contacts list and it doesn't respond. Additionally, when it does scroll correctly, it appears very choppy.

This never happened with the last version of iPhone software. I hope they fix this soon because it's extremely frustrating.

Same thing here on my 3G.

For the past two weeks I've been rebooting the phone to fix it-- it was the only way. Sorry... I moved away from Winblowz for a reason.

Nevertheless, just saw this thread... keys were lagging, turned off keyclick and it's typing speedily again. I hope it lasts.

I don't think turning off the sound is an optimal solution but it'll have to do till they fix it.

Thanks (I'll post if the laggyness returns).

I have a 3g with 2.02 on it. The slow typing issue was gone with 2.01 but it's back worse than ever now. What the hell causes this problem and why is it still not resolved, boy I hope 2.1 will have a solution, but honestly i doubt it.
I'm sure if there were an option to disable auto-correct it would improve the performance while typing.

This issue has been reported more than 10 times here, as well the solution.
I expect that a future patch can do more, but it is related with the others Apple apps that are open in background - they're consuming resources and this lags the keyboard service.
To solve the problem use only the App that you want at time - text, safari... closing first the others apps with a long press on the menu button.

hint, an App is running in background when their content appears shortly when u touch their icon (but this don't helps too much anyway).
