I've notice that keyboard responsivenes is greatly improved with the keyclick sound effect disabled. This was likewise true on my old version 1 iphone.
I've been having a lot of lag issues on my iPhone 3G, version 2.0 (5A345), and since disabling keyclick, I am back to speedy typing.
Restore your firmware to the later version
My 2G has keyboard lag on the latest firmware sometimes...texting today as an example...
Yep, experiencing the same.
I've posted here and on Apple forums about SMS app being the most common culprit, but the problem carries over to Safari as well.
"P" and Backspace go dead, non-responsive...then when they come alive they get stuck and repeatedly fire...other times keyboard sensitivity is all whacked, I press "O" and "I" fires, etc.
Nothing but keyboard problems since I got my iPhone 3g yesterday. Taking it it to a Genius today. Will post back my results from the visit.

I'm on firmware rev 347, I have always had keyclicks disabled (can't stand the annoying noise) and have plenty of lag - excessive at times. I notice that when finger scrolling through my phone book it gets chunky sometimes. I also regularly double tap the home key to quickly pull up the audio controls to pause music. Sometime it acts like a single click (just shows the home slider to unlock without showing the audio controls) and sometimes when I hit play/pause it doesn't take.
Now today mine developed a new "feature". I was on the home screen and went to flick over to the second page. Instead, it rebooted (Apple screen for 30 seconds or so, then back to normal). Yeah! My phone is special!
