Same thing here, but I didn't have another partition with ML on it. I've switched back and forth several times between ML and Mavs. Clean installs. I too am noticing much longer shutdowns, and startups now with Mavericks.

Slide023 MBA mid 2012 4GB RAM 1.8GhZ i5 dual core 128 SSD.

yea I really don't know whats going on.

I tried "repairing disk permission" and "repair disk", found this method on the macforum, and worked for some...but didn't work for me.

I have not tried the terminal sudo's that is listed in this thread.

im going to do another clean install, and crossing my fingers. before I try the terminal sudo's in this thread.

the slow shutdown was introduced into mountain lion after its first or second big patch. before that the os would only take 2-3 seconds to shut down. don't know if it's a feature of ml and mavericks, or a bug, but the shutdown has been slow for a while now.

I had that same shutdown when I upgraded from ML to the GM. A clean install to Mavericks should fix that shutdown stall. :)

how did you get that?

update,

recap, 1st clean install, fast boot up (10 secs) fast shutdown (2secs)

2nd clean install, fast boot up (10 secs) slow shut down (2secs)

3rd clean install, slow boot up (20 secs) fast shut down (2secs & my homescreen hangs halfway *it doesn't into the grey screen completely*)

so im starting to think, its a hit and miss with people getting different shutdown times. I really don't think this is something that apple can fix with programming.

imma try a 4th clean install.

This has been the case for a few years now. I think we just need to live with it. At least startup isn't effected.

Hello,

I have 2008 MBP with 10.9 that shuts down in 3 seconds. My brand new rMbP (Late 2013) with nothing installed takes 15 seconds. Junk!

Agree, my startup isn't affected. It just takes 9 extra seconds to shutdown. Maybe it'll be fixed in the next update. If not at least I have 10 seconds startups.

my iMac takes at least thirty seconds to shut down. Before it would only take about five. why? can anyone help me? :(

Every release someone states "Maybe the next update" but that was a number of updates ago starting with Mountain Lion if not before, and now Mavericks. Don't hold your breath on that one. ;)

The only thing you can do is see if any third party apps are doing any background stuff at shutdown. I don't think you should mess with what apple os is doing at shutdown. You can shorten the "pull the plug on slow apps to close" time that apple uses by default (google this mod) but I really think it is best to just accept this. It won't be fixed anytime soon.

yup, and like I said before, don't think this is going to be fix with future versions of OSX. (in other words programming)

your best bet is keep doing clean installs til you get lucky.

on my 3rd try of clean install I got lucky, and now it shuts down in 2 seconds, :) im happy.

So what do you think changes during clean installs? I haven't tried this method, but willing to if it works.

Agreed. The point is everyone is going to have different shutdown speed. The shutdown process depends on numerous factors, like what your computer is doing at that exact moment, what it's connected to, whether you are trying to use certain internet services that themselves are not functioning optimally, whether you gave an iffy device driver. et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

"pulling the plug" isn't necessarily that safe an option, even if you can tweak software settings to allow that to happen. If you physically pull the plug on something like a Windows computer, for example, you will find that when it boots up the next time, it spends an age trying its best to find out if anything bad happened during the interrupted shutdown, instead of responding to an orderly shutdown.
