Just wondering if the lines for the iPhone 4s are the smallest ever. I know with multiple carriers and all the Pre Orders there were bound to be less people queuing up. But yet I am still kinda surprised and also wishing I had not Pre ordered and just went and picked it up at 8am.

I would imagine individual lines will be much smaller, simply because of the increase of stores that will have the 4S at launch.

In years past you had: Apple Store
Then, Apple Store + AT&T Stores
Then Apple Store + AT&T Stores + Best Buy (and a few other retailers)
Now there's Apple Store + AT&T Stores + Best Buy (and other retailers) + Radio Shack + Verizon Stores + Sprint Stores.

In Sydney Australia the line was miles long 4 hours after the launch.

queues in london look crazy

MY AT&T store has absolutely NO LINE at 9:00AM here on the east coast.

Best Buy had absolutely no line and nor did the verizon I just drove by....

walk right in...get your phone...get out..8 minute process

The VZW store on my way to work in Tallahassee, FL this morning had only 5 or 6 people in line. I was sort of surprised, I we expected more. I didn't expect them to be lined up around the block, but did think I would see 50 or 60 people. The lines for the ip4 last winter were much, much longer at the same store.

Ha ha, that's insane. I work in Sutton (south London) and when I went down the high road at lunchtime there was a small queue at the O2 store but 3, Orange and Vodafone were all queue-less. I thought maybe they were sold out already but the guy in the 3 store told me they still had plenty in stock.

if you are eligible for discounted price, then why not pre-order why queue up?

getting a new line or number is different ...

personally i do all my upgrade in ATT Store (though I like apple store) for ease of activation and number switch over...

also keep in mind that there is no pre-order store pickup option this year. That cuts a significant portion of biomass out.

Line of about 40 people at the AT&T in Carrollwood (Tampa) this morning at 8:30. News reports "hundreds" at the Apple store at International Plaza.

Also, last year was a mad house with standing in line at Apple stores. A guy like me, who went through that last year, just pre ordered this year to avoid that. Gotta figure a lot of people had the same mentality so the lines are smaller.

Several reasons

1) unlike ATT only days (where att moved most of the upgrade eligibility early), now with Verizon and now sprint ATT will not upgrade all the iPhone 4 buyers eligibility

ATT, Verizon will know how much $$$ spending on subsidy and how much revenue from the 2 year plan, sprint will make it even worst

iPhone 3GS unlocked at $375 will make the even difficult for all the carriers for subsidy cost and revenue from the plans

2) Pre-orders

3) Number of places iPhone 4S available

4) iPad and MBA sales

5) Economy still in turmoil

6) it is not iPhone 5

and to some extend

7) pay some respect Steve Jobs (well everyone will get the iPhone 4S slowly and surely)

:)

Went to AT&T store in Crystal City, VA at 7:30am. About 15 people ahead of me. Out by 8:30. There was virtually no line at the Best Buy across the parking lot, but I didn't trust them to do my upgrade properly from 3GS. At least in the US, I think the combination of number of outlets (Apple, ATT, VZ, BB, Target, etc) and the experience (5th phone launch) has things, in general, running more smoothly.

There were about 50 people in line at the AT&T store next to my Starbucks (Dallas suburbs).

The Philadelphia Center City stores are empty, aside from the Apple Store... I was pleasantly surprised... and impressed as well... And not to mention happy! LOL.
