They are there. Front and back coverage in three colors. The gray was what I ordered. Thanks Apple!

I wish they only had the cover, I don't like the back cover. But small issue.
ha good that you got in on that! But that's not a smartcover, but a smartfolio that covers the back as well.
They might still offer one, or maybe they have the folio-only to offset the camera bump.
I'm wanting just the cover as well so I can do a marble dbrand skin on the back to match my XS Max
The smart portfolio is exactly what I wanted and ordered. They did not offer for the 10.5 pro and was very disappointed. I had the smart cover for the 10.5 but never found something that really matched to cover the back, too.
With the folio it is like having your cake and eating it, too!
Just had chat with Apple and they say smart COVERS are coming soon *phew*
Hope they come at some point, the full cover adds too much thickness
Hopefully just because they’re Apple chat and someone who knows told them? I also suspect I’m not the only one who wants one enough to contact them about it
After looking into this further, I think the new positioning of the smart connector (rear, lower center, by USB-C port) is prohibiting a smart keyboard cover (non-folio). I am so accustomed to writing on my iPad with the keyboard folded underneath, creating that nice low writing angle, that this may be a deal-breaker for me.
I agree, it’s pretty major for me too .. 95% of the time I’m sitting with the iPad on its Smart Cover. Perfect angle for typing in my comfy chair!
Apple chat knows nothing more than anyone else, until it’s announced.
With the new magnets layout inside the iPad Pro, I doubt the cover only option is possible anymore.
Looks like the magnet on the side is reserved for the Apple Pencil 2 and that's why they switch to the folio style.

I wouldn't trust Apple's chat as a reliable source. They're too low on the corporate ladder to have any insider information and even if they did, they're prohibited from discussing products that haven't been announced. They were likely thinking you were referring to the Smart Folio.

I know this thread is about the 11 inch but why in the world did Apple once again only offer white and gray for the 12.9? Sam ole same. I'd like a little color...
I'm totally confused as to how you are supposed to use the ipad with the cover on when you're not typing? You fold it behind and the keys just sorta stick into your fingers? As least the one for the 10.5 folds into itself, hiding the keyboard...what is this one supposed to do?
