I initially thought that too, but I've figured out a pretty decent solution: you know those flip out PTVs (or the ones that come out of the armrest)? Just rest the smart cover cover the top of it. Works surprisingly well and the magnet is just strong enough to keep the iPad from falling off. Don't tug on it though.

I dont have a damn clue what you are talking about

You know the personal televisions that you get on a plane? The ones that swing out from the armrest or the panel next to you? Like so:

Hold the iPad perpendicular to the PTV's screen. Open the smart cover then fold it over the top of the fold-out TV screen. Let go. Voila, you now have an iPad holder.

Wow, I've flew many, many times within the US, and never seen anything like that.

No, if smart case is available then i will absolutely buy smart case. Because i like smart case more than smart cover.

If you want scratch protection, get a smart cover and a sleeve. I couldn't reccomemd this case to anyone.

Better yet get a very thin back cover like the incipio feather. That plus my smart cover seems like the best of both worlds compared to the smart case.

Get out of the sticks, Clevis... Just kidding. Standard fare in business class on most airlines flying internationally.

But a horrible idea- first bit of sharp turbulence and your iPad will drop onto metal seat parts. No thanks.

(Two million miler on Delta and million miler on JAL so I do know something about the subject).

I very reluctantly vote Smart Cover. I like how thin and light the Smart Case is, but I just couldn't stand the texture of the material. If it had a slightly different texture, I might have gone for it. My current back cover is thicker and offers more protection against drops, but there are times when I wish the whole thing weighed just a bit less.

Picked up the dark grey Smart Case the other day from Apple and I'm very pleased with it! I had been using a black leather Smart Cover with just a simple slip case. I only wish they would have had the option for a black poly or just a black leather one.

I still use the smart cover when I'm at home though, not too worried about drops or anything of the sort and so I can still use my dock. When I leave home or relax outside I'll slip the Smart Cover on for that extra protection.

I just noticed the bezel on the smart case. I never liked cases that create that bezel. Couldn't it have been flush like the feather?

I just picked up a Smart Case at the Apple store when I went in to check out the new retina MBP's. It was an impulse buy, and a bad one.

The employees were walking around showing them off, but they all had iPad 2's in them. They were swimming in the cases, but they all said the new iPad fits nice and snug so I grabbed one.

Wow. What a piece of junk! I'm usually pretty forgiving, but for $50 this thing ought to be perfect. Not only is it not perfect, it's possibly the worst case I've tried yet.

The new iPad still has room to swim around in the case. The lip that attaches the "frame" around the screen to the back is just a glued and cut seam. Really poor workmanship. My one gripe about the iPad has been that the edges are sharp and uncomfortable to hold for extended periods of time. With this case, Apple has actually found the one way to make this worse!

Needless to say, it'll be going back to Apple. I'll stick to the Smart Cover and a generic silicone skin for the back.

I have the smart cover and it's a cool accessory but that is where it ends. It only holds the ipad in 2 positions and doesn't help if you want to hold it in portrait mode. If it's fully folded back it barely sticks to the device so for the most part its an over p riced bust imo

Interested in the Smart case but closest Apple Store is @300 miles way, and my local Best Buy isn't stocking them yet. Next time I'm at an Apple Store, I'm going to take my (new) iPad with me, buy the Smart case, and if I don't like the fit, return it before I leave the store.

They should have made the back magnetic. Really dumb move on their part...

I have been thinking about picking up a Smart Case, and I think I will. I think most of the complaints are a little petty in my opinion.

For example the top section being hard to open, In my opinion that is more of a positive than a negative. I would rather it be harder to open and more flush to the body of the case rather that it flap open easily. Once it is open, it will stay open for hours in my case before I close it again in the evening.

Secondly, many have complained about the sharpness of the edge of the case. I think this is a little overblown. Many I have to spoke to about it have also stated that it does not hurt after a long period of time. Unless it cuts me whilst I am holding it, honestly I could not care less. Im sure we all have differing levels of what we think is sharp or not, and I honestly cannot see how the sides of the Smart Case are sharp.

It also seems that there are varying batches in terms of case quality, some I have seen a little loose, however I have watched almost 5 reviews today on Youtube from Technology reviewers and all have stated that the fit is nice and secure. All were in either the Dark Grey or Red colour.

I think I will pick one up and see for myself, I usually adjust to cases within hours, so I cannot see it being a problem. The case looks great in my opinion, slim, ports cutouts look superb.

Furthermore, I am glad that according to some the smart cover portion of the case on top doesn't touch the screen because of the lip running round the iPad. Lets face it, using the smart cover to clean your screen was a fad, awful design idea. As soon as oils/dirt from the screen goes onto the smart cover, it is going to reapply itself onto the screen once it is closed. Same applies with lint. I am hoping the new Smart Case's front portion does in fact not touch the screen.

Yeah, it sucks using the smart cover as a stand because it picks up a lot of dirt, and then you close it and that dirt goes to th screen...Probably better that it doesn't touch the screen with the case.

Smart case for sure. Most would only do smart cover + some sort of back protection. Will likely come out more expensive than just getting a smart case.

I would reconsider considering how horrible some of the reviews are.

Most of the written reviews are not great, but many of the Youtube reviews from people who have reviewed literally hundreds of cases are quite good.

The written reviews complain about the sharpness of the edges, seemingly as if they have such delicate skin on their hands it causes them pain, others complain of the stability of the case. I have seen many reviews on Youtube and the case looks stable, just as stable as the Smart Cover.

I don't think the cons brought up in the reviews are significant enough for it not to be a "decent" case. Fair enough if the ports did not align or something, then I would not buy the case.

The sharpness of the edges, I could live with. My main problem was the overall texture of the case, but I admit I'm a bit finicky about that, and it should be fine for most people. As for stability, it was definitely less stable than the smart cover -- you had to really jiggle it to get it to stay upright in the video viewing position. I'm sure it could be made to look stable in YouTube videos, but in person, it was pretty bad.

I'd be very interested to hear your impressions once you use one yourself, but I just don't think YouTube videos are inherently more or less trustworthy than written opinions. Both good and bad points can be grossed over or exaggrated in either format.

It does flap open easily. It cannot even sustain the weight of the cover at a 90° angle. It is much weaker than the smart cover in this regard, and still hard to purposefully open.

After using this case for a few days, the sharp edges have become duller and it is easier to hold the case.

Overall, I love the look of it, especially the back, but I dislike the loose fit. I'm not sure if I'm going to keep it at this point.

I am a little worried about the stability issue, I don't want it falling over whilst I am watching a movie or something, I am surprised Apple let something go out to the public with even a small problem such as this, makes you think what if Steve was still alive....Apple usually makes sure that their cases are stable. I have never had one problem with the Smart Cover, very stable from my own experience. I am a little worried with stability issues with the Smart Case.

Another not very positive opinion on stability. Not good.

I am glad to hear the sharp edges have become less of a problem for you, I think that is something one can adapt to.

I see you have stated you may not keep it, I think that you have done the right thing, tried it and if you don't like it, take it back. That is what I plan to do, I really like the look of the case and it looks good in terms of design which is a big importance for me, I like to have full protection whilst keeping as close to the original form factor.

Do you know how long I have to send it back if I order one online and then feel that it is not worthy of keeping? Is it 30 days, I have a feeling it may be shorter than that.

I'm almost certain that it's 14 days. As far as stability of the stands go, they only really "work" on totally solid surfaces. A simple touch of the screen on my bed or on carpet sends the case falling over backwards from the viewing position. I love the look of this case, hate the functionality so far.

Okay, thankyou. Do you mind me asking what colour you have?

I am hoping someone here has Red, Some of the reviews I have seen make it appear more orange than Red.

Also, does lint attach to the case easily, for example is it hard to clear dust off of the Smart Case. I am not too familiar with Polyester, I have been using a Leather Smart Cover.

You're in luck, I have the red one! This case is one of the brighter reds I've ever seen. It's redder than a stop sign, honestly. There's no way that I could say that this case is at all orange.

I have the red leather smart cover(I like red, and aids research), and this one shows a lot more oil than the leather version, but less dirt/sweat from holding it. I haven't had any problem with lint yet.

Also, my leather one scratched easily, something that this one doesn't do.

EDIT: Here's a photo of it next to some red scissors, a red taffy taffy wrapper and red lightbulb packaging. You can see just how red it is.
