I received my Red Smart Case last night from Apple UK and I don't have any of the problems brought up by others.

First of all, the Red looks awesome, really nice bright Red as displayed in previous posts within this thread. I am happy I went with the Red.

As for people finding it hard to open, I find it very easy to open, it sits flush to the case but it is not so flush that you can't just open it with your thumb.I find it difficult to believe people are having a problem opening the case.

As for the material it is very nice, provides a good amount of grip and it has not picked up any lint.

As for the fit, I am using it with an iPad 3 and I find that it fits perfectly, I actually had trouble getting it into the case. Took about 10 minutes because it is a tight fit. I can see less than 1mm of a gap in the top left corner, but that is all. Hardly a problem. The ports align perfectly as well.

I have heard people also state that it is sharp around the edges, I have held it for periods of 3/4 hours and I have not experienced that. The edges are there, but I think they are hardly sharp or discomforting, but I guess that is different for everyone.

Lastly, there is the complaint of instability, this one I can understand, when the case is in "Movie mode" there is some instability, I would not recommend putting it in that mode if you plan on touching the screen, but it is stable enough to stand up if you don't keep touching the screen, putting it off balance. For watching a movie its fine.

All in all, I love it, great design and exactly what I was looking for. Only con for me is the stability whilst in that mode, luckily for me I rarely have it in that mode, perhaps once a month, I watch my media in the form of Blu Rays on my TV when possible, I rarely watch films on my iPad unless I am travelling which is fairly regularly but not a problem.

Thank goodness you posted.

I bought one a few days ago and had it personalised so I will be unable to return if its rubbish. :(

I looked at a few videos on youtube and it looked fine. Fingers crossed I get a good one!

I also did not have much trouble getting it open, but it did "stick" more than the Smart Cover, which has nothing to stick to, because it's just the cover on the screen. With the Smart Case, the cover rests on the edge of the case covering the bezel. Might also have to do with where you are. I have a suspicion that material could get more sticky if you are in a humid environment.

And I like to keep the iPad standing in "movie mode" on my desk and using it for various tasks in that mode. So for me, instability in that mode was one of the deal breakers. The main deal breaker was that I couldn't get comfortable with the feel of the material. I'm rather sad about that, as I do like how light and minimal the Smart Case is. I'd love to have something lighter than my current leather Smart Cover + back case combo, and I was hoping the Smart Case would be it, but unfortunately, it doesn't work for me. :(

I've decided to keep my smart case after a modification.

To fix the fit, I took red gift wrapping ribbon and stuck it around the edges of the case. It fits perfectly now. It's a great case after you fix that. I'm trying to design something to make it more stable. I'll let you know if I find anything.

MacGyver Fix of The Day!!!

iPad 2 or 3?

I have had the Red Smart Case since last Saturday and really like the case a lot. I have my iPad 2 in it right now and have absolutely no complaints with this case. Is a there a little bit of a gap on the "hinge" side, yes, but I'm not so anal that it bothers me...

i got mine personalized as well but was able to return it without a problem

Sent back the Smart Case. My iPad 2 was swimming in it. Didn't care for the white Apple on the back of the dark gray- looked a bit tacky. Also wasn't thrilled about the color combo of the dark gray Smart Case and black iPad. Got my Smart Cover today, in light gray and expecting my Belkin Snap Shield Secure in clear this week, so I'm happy.

Do you have this case? The ergonomics are inexcusable, if apple couldn't make a piece of polyurethane that works well for under $80, it should have been made. This is the first time that I've been totally disappointed with an Apple product.

100 pct agree.....1st product apple has really screwed up, no one can defend this case and know what else is out there....

I don't complain about too many things but the smart case that I bought was really bad. My iPad (the new iPad) almost fell out of the case while I was holding it. Back to the Apple store it went. Way too loose for me. I ended up repurchasing the exact same Griffin Passport Folio case I had returned to Walmart. The sales guy told me the case had never been used. I told him that I was the one who taped the package back together. All he could say was............Oh!!!!!!

Is the smart case really that bad? :confused:I was thinking of getting one...
go look at one...it reeks of bad execution....Actually I am shocked that is an apple product.....At the christianna mall in Delaware last week, i saw a stack of returned cases....the apple shirts said "many" were returning them...which in robot apple speak I take as a sh--load are being returned.....

I just took my iPad out of the smart case for the first time in a few weeks! It is hot! The SmartCase completely eliminates that problem, in the same way that the bummer fixed the reception issue. I see why Apple made it now.

Just got my case. Its not as snug as I hopped but i'm not gonna lose any sleep over it.

I'll keep hold of it :)

Smart cover

I always tend to buy the newest things just to try it out. The smart case sucks. The home button wouldn't work. It made my new iPad big n bulky. I felt like I dropped down two generations back to the iPad one with the original case. Warning this is not a buy. And I dunno seems like it drained the battery faster.

"Gucciipad" Home button wouldn't work? Uh... it does not even touch the home button. Drained the battery faster? ... ?

Uh. I took my new iPad in with both covers. Genius bar determined it was the smart case. The smart cover works fine.

How could the smart case make the home button not work? Also drain the battery faster?

*****?!?

Then the genius bar was ********ting you because the smart case cannot do what you are saying because it is physically impossible, and for you to believe that shows some pretty extreme naivety.

I purchased an Apple SmartCase – and it is going back to the store today. The SmartCase feels like a quick ‘slap it together’ project – very unlike Apple. I was hoping that they’d take the many cases with this design out there and make one better, make it their own. Instead they left out the obvious features and design elements instead of improving on them.

Here’s why I am returning it:

- The seams around all the edges feel a bit sharp and abrasive and make holding the iPad uncomfortable. This is the main reason why I am returning it. It just doesn’t feel good in your hands.

- The left and right sides of the iPad (in portrait position) are loose – there is nothing for the iPad to grip on to. The sides will pull apart slightly when picking it up with the case open, or by holding it with certain normal hand motions.

- There is a raised lip/border around the entire iPad – totally unnecessary. The iPad should snap into an ultra-thin soft-touch shell (or firmer fabric) leaving he surface completely flat. This would eliminate the abrasive seams and the dust that will collect all around the edges when wiping the display clean.

- There is no little ‘grab’ opening on the side to quickly open the cover. You need to play around with it, or grab one of the seams on top of the cover to collapse it to successfully open it. A quick process, just annoying.

- The iPad feels wobbly when standing in landscape mode. If you don’t fold the cover just right, it will topple over (unlike the SmartCover that folds into the triangular stand mode effortlessly).

- The exterior back portion collects a bit too much lint and debris due to the texture. It feels nice, but again, a high quality soft-touch exact color-matched snap in shell would have made so much more sense and would remedy this small but annoying issue.

Apple could have made a great all-in-one case, but they didn’t. I am actually shocked that this has Apple’s name on it. It’s lacking so much I can’t believe I even bought it in the first place! If nothing else, the price should be reduced to $29. But, since it has the Apple logo on it, it will sell - and I will admit, it's why I bought one without doing any research on it!

Smart Cover + belkin snap case = Best combo (minimal & Simple) :)

Smart case and clear-coat screen and back protection. Slim, minimalist protection which I like and nice grip.
