To paraphrase Steve Jobs, "you're using it wrong." Seriously, the iPad cover isn't for him. It's for people who want to use it on a flat surface. And there's a reason it comes off so easily - for when you are using your iPad on a not so flat surface - like your lap, for example.

If you need a case, get a case. This isn't pretending to be a case. And you can bet there will be third party cases that use magnets for automatic locking/unlocking, if there aren't already.

Cool. The iPad 1 case not only worked on uneven surfaces, but it also protected the back.

It's a step backwards, I'd say. Boo hoo it uses magnets. Too bad it's not practical at all compared to the original case.

I absolutely love the smart cover, it provides enough protection for around the house and I have an incase sleeve for when I go out. Perfect combination of slimness and protection imo.

Someone did. It's just that nobody cared about it until Apple told them to.

(Thats the Incase Jacket for original iPad)
Made by Apple, before Incase:

What is your point?

I gave the smart cover a fair shake. Bought it on launch day and used up until today. It's just a bit unstable and flops around too much for my liking. I tried lot's of methods described around here and on Youtube and I just couldn't get comfortable with it. Today I stopped at a Best Buy and picked up the Targus cover they had and was surprised at how well it met my needs.

Maybe I'll find something I like even more once the market for iPad 2 covers expands, but for now I'm pretty happy with this cover. The smart cover is going back to Apple tomorrow. It's a bit of brilliant design, but in the end it just didn't cut the mustard.

I was really thinking of getting a cover like this, but I realized I wanted to cover the whole ipad (when it comes in around a month from now). My job gave us a iphone to use, and a otterbox case. I have heard of these cases before, but never tried them. I like the case and the construction. Granted it does add bulk to the iphone, but the protection is worth it.

Now when I get my ipad I am going to get the otterbox case. Yes, just like the iphone case it will add bulk, but its worth it in my opinion.

Exactly my opinion and strategy.

+1.
White iPad 2, with cream leather Smart Cover and a neoprene sleeve for travelling. That's the route I'm taking.

as much as i do like the smart cover I would like something more like the case for the original iPad. Any hints on finding one like that?

No one case is going to suit everyone.

I think (don't have one yet so not sure ) it will suit me. I have the ipad 1 in the apple case and find my self taking it out of the case a lot as I just prefer holding it naked. I think the smart cover will be great for covering the screen a then just pulling off and putting to one side.

If the ipad gets scratched a little here or there due to me using it so be it. Would rather use the product as I like it rather than preserve it 100% for whoever ends up buying it off me in a year.

Come back in 2012 and post how much you sell that (possibly scratched/beat up iPad2) for...out of curiosity.

If you're that interested I'm sure you could find out the price difference right now using iPad prices.

You have missed my point though.

I purchased the leather smart cover with my 64gb 3G but dislike how it does not protect the bottom of the device while it covers the front.

I am anxiously waiting for the Speck Products unit as it is a sleeve that covers the back and yet still uses the triangular front cover at the same time.

I love my smart cover too. No bulk and my screen is protected when not in use. I do keep my iPad in a sleeve when in a bag or being taken somewhere to give it extra protection, but around the house it's just wearing its pink

According to the Incase website, the Magazine Jacket for the iPad 2 should be released in April. I just the original iPad case on my iPad for over a year and just "discovered" the Incase Jacket a month ago. This is the perfect case for the iPad, I wish I had found it sooner. Hopefully, the new incase jacket will be the same, but with magnets on the cover to hold it down.

I got it Target. It's made by Tuari, is a 10.2" laptop sleeve and cost $12.99.

Has a small pocket on the front that I keep a microfiber cloth in for wiping down the screen.

Got the exact same one it's perfect. Cheaper and better than anything at at apple store.

I ordered a clear back protector for Zagg and that will keep the back from getting scratched. I like going nakedmwith it as well. I think it will be a great combination, if the Zagg ever gets here that is.

I couldn't care less personally as I won't do yearly upgrades as my tablet uses are basic so the iPad 2 does everything I need shy of having MS Office and being more of a tablet PC which will never happen on the iPad anyway.

2-3 years down the road it would't be worth much anyway so I'd just give it to a friend or family member or donate it somewhere anyway.

Plus I doubt I'll get any major scratches or any thing using the smart cover and sleeve combo anyway as I'm very careful with my gadgets.

The Smart Cover + a skin (I am eyeing iCarbons myself) seems the current best solution for "minimalist" but useful coverage. There is something very very desirable about how thin the iPad 2 is, and this preserves this while protecting the unit.

The thinness though sometimes gets awkward, like reading for long periods. I ended up getting a Griffin Elan Folio Pro which is leather, thin and provides both front and back coverage. Really like how I can slip my left hand between the case and the iPad back while reading. There are also times than even this small extra thickness feels awkward, but overall I like.

Really hoping InCase nails the redesign on the Magazine Jacket, and uses magnets to boot! That might be the winner for full coverage & protection, while being very useful, if they do it right.
