Didn't they go with numbers because they didn't want names like "SuperDouche" showing up on their online network? Nintendo is family friendly remember. I don't like friend codes either, but whatever. I'm just hopin' for some ranked matches.

exactly. Plus the telephone industry has dealt with numbers for all these years, surely nintendo can handle them just fine.

Friends Codes totally destroyed the DS, o'wait!

Err and the pointless argument award goes to ... :p

Has anyone here said that the wii is failing or being destroyed ?

It's just that there is a hell of a lot of people who would prefer a gamertag system, one where it only requires you to send a friend request once and for the otherside to accept or decline rather than fart about inputting 16 digit codes on both sides.

One that also allows after going to the effort of inputing the 16 digit code, to name your friend with more than just 8 poxy characters so that half their name is missing.

Just because a system is selling very well doesnt mean that it is without fault, so

Friends Codes totally destroyed the DS, o'wait!

is utterly pointless and if I may say so... very pretentious.

Mate it wasn't meant as a serious comment :)

Friend codes haven't taken away from the fun of playing DS games online, sure a unified service would be great. But it serves its purpose. So long as theres a random option to play anyone in a game I'm more than happy. Or some kind of local link up, like the way Animal Crossing would auto-add Friend Codes when you meet people in the regular wireless mode.

Hasn't made Strikers any less fun either.

Going off topic a little, Steams getting very good now. The PC finally has a unified online service to put Xbox Live in it's consoletard (forgive me for using that word) place. Free too, and the games are cheaper.

but their 'online' gaming attempt is so pathetic that I would rather them just get rid of it all together!

Um, what? Friend Codes are better then nothing.

It wouldn't be as bad, if you added the friend code once, and then all your games looked for friends with any online games you have

You noob (yeah right with your post count!) you forgot to put the ;) then. :p:rolleyes::p

Steam bugged me with HL2. Maybe because it was before I had broadband, and so when I got HL2 and found out I had to spend many many hours unpacking steam on a poor dial up modem it basically tarnished it for me. Added then to the fustration of steam client constantly it seemed needing updating everytime I started up to have a quick go on HL2, it totally recked my head.

When I got Dark Messiah on the PC, it's online component is powered by Steam, but i didn't install it simply because the thought of all that effort and horridness I experienced with HL2 still haunted me.

I must give it another chance, but I'm rarely on the PC these days tbh.

Just to clarify so I can link back 'ere in the future :)

I'd absolutely love the Wii to have an online community style setup going for it, along with usernames in lieu of numbers. But it works, it fulfills the bare minimum to get online, and when in game, enjoyable. Though my heart will always be with having friends round for multiplayer action. I can take or leave HL2 online matches, but HL2 LAN parties are the stuff of Gods.

And as applications like Steam and PSN get more and more popular then hopefully Live itself will be forced to be free or improved beyond the competition.

It kinda did for me, but that's just me. I'm sure it worked great for other people.

Um, what? Friend Codes are better then nothing.

Actually, in my own opinion, no it's not. ;) Call me lazy, but I just can't be bothered with entering these ridiculous codes all the time.

But I can't really complain much because I don't do much online gaming as it is. I'm too competitive and simply not good enough to compete with the majority of the people online. So in order to avoid the fits of frustration, I just don't play online. ;)

I want to know if people in Japan are as upset about this as we are?

Over there the 360 still isn't a big deal even now so they arent' used to gamertags like we are.

Anyway I wonder if it's b/c the Japanese don't care about console online gaming as much and that's why Nintendo is being lame.

To be frank it made my whole month to hear this news. I would love some kind of leaderboards but this will do.

Remember guys: the Japanese are, as a people, NOT confrontational unlike us Americans etc. This may be a reason he says: If you think of your opponent as a simple scarecrow, any psychological barriers may melt away.
