... as I've commented in other threads, my 24" iMac had those swirly, smoky traces in the upper corners from the first time I unboxed it.......... I just wiped them off removing the glass with a suction cup........

This is a different Issue to what I had. I originally thought it was just dirty marks, but found out as soon as I removed the glass that it was not dirt. See Previous post.

People with problems: Direct sunlight? Hot/Cold rooms? Hot weather/cold weather outside?

No direct sunlight on my iMac.

Hot & Cold rooms - possibly. I live in South Korea where the temperature gets up to 35C in the summer and down to -5C in the winter. Having said that, the Air Con is always on in the summer and the heating is always on in the winter so can't see this being the issue. I'm certainly no expert on the issue though!

I had my iMac for 8 months before I had the issue. The screen was perfect when I took it out of the box.

..... I see,.... there seems to be different issues concerning smoky traces, some much more serious than others......

ok after reading your posts back last year i bought a imac 27" had it for a month and noticed when i was booting it up there was black marks in the inner screen so took it back to apple they fixed it 6 weeks later same thing happened so went back again was angry to be honest so they give me a brand new one and told me i had a full 12 months warranty on it again as it was a new machine now i just noticed the same thing all over again smokey screen on top right of the glass my question is to u nice ppl could i get a refund as ive had it with imacs i have a 2009 mbp and have never had any issues with it would like to get mac pro thanks for reading

A little over 2 months later and the new replacement screen now has the same problem as the original - Smokey marks about 6 inches by 6 inches bang in the middle of the screen.

I'll be contacting Apple and asking for my money back as I am still within the 1 year warranty period. P****D OFF!

I've got the smokey marks all over my 2009 i7 iMac's screen - first noticed about 11 months after I got it. I checked it over thoroughly when it arrived, since so many people had the yellow screen issue, and it was very good when new. Now, on any solid-color areas of the screen, it's pretty obvious.

I have AppleCare for another two years, and it's not actually effecting my work at all at this point, so I'm going to wait until the Sandy Bridge iMacs are released before I take it in. I figure they'll fix it once, and if it does it again, maybe I'll get a new machine out of it.

Unfortunately, this issue is really scaring me away from a new 27 in iMac. Maybe I will buy a 15in MBP and use the 21.5 in Samsung display I have instead. Or maybe an updated Mac mini if they aren't too bad.

I use office, iPhoto, iMovie, handbrake, iTunes, Chrome and play steam games. A Mac mini with sandy bridge might be just fine.

After 1-1/2 hours on the phone with Apple Care Customer services, they refused to give me a full refund or a replacement iMac because my screen had only been repaired / replaced once and that was acceptable. They told me that they will only offer to replace the screen and that was it, basically take it or leave it

I finally agreed to this after a very heated debate (argument).

Not happy. I wouldnt say I am a fanboy but I do own a number of apple products and have done for many years and have been very happy with them. Today my thoughts of Apple changed quite considerably. My next computer will not be an Apple.

If this 3rd Screen experiences the same issue, all hell is going to break loose.

If it happened once in my opinion and my case, it will probably happen again, just go with the flow and have it replaced two or three times and then they should replace it with a new one for you

I have them on mine as well, its a 6 week old 27" iMac.
MY First Mac and may be my last from the looks of all the post I see about this trouble.
You would think that they would have fixed for this by now.
Dont these dumb asses at Apple know we don't run these things in computer clean rooms?
I could have got almost 3 PC's for what I payed for this.
At five years each that would be 15 years worth of computers.
This is six weeks old, AM I PISSED? You do the math.
Im Thinking class-action, from the looks of it every one that has an all in one has this trouble or will have it soon.

So at this point what is everyone doing? Especially for those out of Apple Care?

I was able to get them to cover the $1000 (CDN) cost to replace the LED panel but what will happen when (or if) it happens again?

I am a serious photographer (not pro) and work with a calibrated monitor. I can't work with smokey images!

Just curious what everyone is doing or plans to do?

:confused::confused::confused:

i guess if it happens out of apple care you got 4 choices :
1 selling it for spares and get a couple dollars for it if you find a buyer that is
2 spend the money to get it replaced until it happens again
3 keep it as paperweight
4 use it without internal display and connect a 30" cinema display and place the iMac behind that

there is a 5th choice , as someone has done it before, is taking the led panel apart and clean it inside ( yes the led panel not the glass in front of it ) considering the cost of a replacement its a cheap option and if it goes wrong then you still got the other 4 choices left

Just had my iMac in for this.

It's something on the actual LCD panel. I was just hoping it was the glass, but it was smudging or something on the actual LCD panel.

AppleCare will take care of it (if they haven't already.)

Sure thing -- but what are your plans when Apple Care runs out? And when (if?) it happens again?

Personally, I will either have the screen replaced again (if necessary) just before AppleCare runs out, then sell it (or trade it in) at the next upgrade opportunity.

that is exactly in apples interest if people upgrade at very least every 3 years , the problem is if the smokey bit and the cost get public who will pay for a used iMac with such a problem ?
i mean after 3 years your iMac will be worth how much? if its the i7 ? in theory 1300-1400 ,but if potential buyers know a new display cost them 700 ,they would need to pay more for the used one then for a brandnew one so the resell value will quickly drop to 500 or so if people who buy used Mac's have a bit common sense left as its a reoccurring problem so even the naive will think about what if that bit apple care left runs out ...
all these little problems that occur on the new iMac's have a impact on resell value , so the whole financing of a new iMac by selling the old will collapse, just a thought as i think no matter how good the iMac looks but paying serious money for something used that likely to end more often in the store to get repaired is not a great idea to buy

Exactly, which means you have to sell your used iMac after max 2 years, so you can tell the potential buyer that it still has one year left of the Apple Care.

Same Problem

I had the same problem on my 27 iMac and after three tries to fix they replaced it. Now after three months I have the same problem with the new one.

Take it back. They will replace.

Dang .. I think my iMac just get it too. I don't realize it until I reboot and suddenly on upper right corner I have this long smokey display. Annoying and noticeable on white/light color background.

My iMac only 2.5months old (3.4GHz i7) and have it already. :(

Does this really common in iMac? All happens on upper right corner? Maybe it happens due to heated by GPU heatsink?

Please enlighten me here fellows :)

Mine started on the right but spread to almost the whole screen.

When I brought it in they claim they had no idea why it happens but asked if I smoke or use a humidifier.
