In some countries, including mine the Telcos actually bundle in about 100-500 text messages with the dataplan f.o.c.

So it would be great to be able to utilize the free sms via the iPad. 😉

But hey i'm sure, someone would be porting over the sms/phone or whatever app to the iPad 3G(since it seems technically possible) 😱

TextPlus is great for sending and recieving SMS on the iPad, and it's free too. The delay is usually only a few seconds for me.

I've been using Text+ all night and it's been great. Even does pop-ups so I can be browsing and get them.

100% agree with this. I asked the developers of bite SMS about exploring an app that would link the iPad and iPhone so you could send from the iPad and the iPhone would send it. They said they would explore the idea when the iPad has been jailbroken! Can't wait to use quickreply on my iPad!

Excellent idea. I would love to text with my iPad this way.

Another vote for Text + 😀

How exactly does Text + work? I read its description but they're a little vague. If I were to text someone with an iPad, I'm assuming it'd come up on their phone as a five-or-six digit random number, right? How would they know it's me? And how does going back and forth texting on an iPad and iPhone work, too - is it easy to keep the same conversation going on both?

Once you set up an account, you will be able to send messages. There will be two messages sent. The first will be a how to for the user to know what to do. It really looks Ike spam. A second message will follow that will include your name as you registered and your text message. The receiver will then be able to add you to their contacts list. Once they do this, every messasge will come up with your contact name as they have it in their contacts list. The first time is usually a little confusing, but once everything is set up on their end, it is easy usage.

I am by no means a power user, but it works well when I do use it.

Another vote for Text Plus. It's worked well for me.

I've also been trying out and enjoying Whistle for VoiP phone calling on the iPad. It was pretty trippy the first time I called someone and said, "Hey, it's me...I'm calling from the Pad!" It's a free app on the app store, calls are free (although you have to listen to a 10 second ad before your call goes through). Sound quality is a bit dodgy at times, but then other times it's quite clear too.

Here's the website for more info (It seems like I'm trying to sell the company, but I'm not connected in any way to them). 😱

Any news/update almost a year on? (sorry to bump-up an old thread, but I have my reasons..) 😀 I love chilling on the sofa browsing on my iPad after a long day, the only thing that's missing is the SMS thing. My area has very weak signal, so I have to leave my phone on the window-frame in the front room, to get a better connection as it's tethered to my iPad. It's just a pain in the ass having to get up and walk over to the iPhone to read the text, when most of the time I just put it straight back down again anyway as it's junk.

Not only that, but it's painful having to go back to that tiny screen when being used to the massive iPad keyboard after an hour or so. Before I bought my iPad I didn't know any better!

Is there not an app that at least pushes a pop-up notification on the iPad from the iPhone with the text content? I'm aware of the likes of SwirlySMS and such, but I don't want an alternative number just for text messaging. Just a Bluetooth connection to send a notification perhaps? Using the iPad keyboard to remotely reply from the iPhone using the iPad keyboard would just be an extra luxury.

I'd also considered using some utility that allows incoming SMS messages to be auto-forwarded to an email account, configured on the iPad, but that would-be just as useless having to exit the app and open and check email. Then I came across 'PushMail' that gives a pop-up notification (iPhone SMS style) both would probably work well together as a decent solution - the only thing missing in all of this is the SMS-email forwarding utility!

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

i dont think there is anything but would also love this feature. palm is doing something like it with the pre and the touchpad. maybe it will come when the implement nfc

Agreed. Works well.

Sorry, forgot to mention I'm in the UK, GV seems to be available only to residents of the US & Canada, unfortunately.

Shame, that, as I've heard so many good reviews about it through the likes of people such as your self on this, and other, forums, and all over the Internet generally. But thanks for the recommendation all the same. Just have to wait until they finally manage to implement it outside the current designated constituencies. So FTW it may be, but sucks for us Brits, though. 😛

I've been waiting for this kind of integration since iPad was announced. If I get an incoming call or text I should be able to answer/reply from my iPad.

I'd prefer some kind of wifi based solution rather than Bluetooth, that way I could stick my iPhone on it's dock and just keep my iPad with me around the house.

Basically like they showed off on the HP TouchPad.

Just make the switch to a google voice number & you'll never be without your text messages again. And they'll also be with you forever.

Until Google accidentally deletes your account.

If you are out and about using your ipad regularly, how would you answer a phone call?

Never had Google voice delete my account.
You can easily set up your account to forward google voice calls to your cellphone.
And yu can use talkatone to make calls over wifi from your iPad.

Have you used google voice?

There recently was an issue with G deleting a bunch of accounts. The data was gone and irretrievable.

I know that you can use the iPad to make calls, Skype for example, but from a usability POV it feels like the least convenient thing you can do.

Not at all.
I've done it using a Bluetooth headset, and it works great.
Its a great solution if you travel abroad. You can call anywhere for pennies, using wifi.

I have a google voice number and use google voice connect/boxcar combo. It's great. Before google voice connect, I was using textplus silver which is awesome as well. I still have to use I to sen pictures because gv connect WO and pics.

I see this is from over a year ago, I just sent them an email requesting the same feature yesterday, havent heard back from them yet though. In mean at the very least it would be nice if bite SMS could forward them to another number so that I could use google voice on my iPad without having to give all my friends a new number to text.
