again, you're NOT THINKING.

if i'm asleep and the phone is on the desk across the room and it beeps for a text message.....why would i want to wake up 100%, walk across the room to dismiss it???

it should beep just once in an option setting. end of discussion.

Why not just turn off text tones when you go to take your nap? If its important enough, they'll call you.

The notification system built into the iPhone is weak, plain and simple. Over the last year that I've owned an iPhone and reading this board it has become blatantly obvious that many many others have the same issues as myself.

Some like more, some like less. Apple's inability to leave the choosing to the end user is mind boggling!

Apple should really take a look at the blackberry's notification system and take some notes.

If you want only one profile like Apple offers, fine, that's your choice. You want to be able to setup multiple sound profiles for different situations? You should be able to do that too. Give us the choice!

On a blackberry you are allowed to have many. Want vibrate only? No problem. Want phone only? No problem. Want all the sounds? No problem. Want a different sound when it's in a case versus out of a case? No problem.

Apple needs to step it up!

Or, um, you could just get this blackberry that sounds right up your alley.

To me, this is honestly like posting (and bitching) on the Ferrari forums that the cup holder isn't the exact right size for whatever drink you're drinking that day.

Not really. Is allowing multiple sound profiles too much too asked? Most phones (including the blackberry) offer that feature. It is a very basic feature that should have been included since day one.

As an Apple fan I stood inline for the first iPhone a year ago and have stood beside it until the 2.0 software and iPhone 3G came out. I upgraded and regretted that I got rid of my first iPhone. Sure it had a few shortcomings that I could happily wait for to be added via updates, but at least it worked.

This new phone and software put me over the edge. What I disaster. 2 weeks ago I gave up and use my new iPhone as an iPod touch. I have gone back to carrying two devices, just like I did before the iPhone was around. I hate it and will wait for Apple to get it fixed as I have no choice. I need to reliably make calls and send messages. Until that time comes, I am going to use my old trusty blackberry curve to provide that for me.

ya exactly ... so where's the beef, then?

If you need to lug around a lot of groceries, get a minivan. If you want to go fast, get a sports car. If you need a multi-purpose, get a Honda Element (or whatever). But don't act surprised when you get a sports car and can't take all the neighborhood kids to soccer practice.

In the same vein, don't act all surprised when you get an iPhone and it doesn't do everything a Blackberry does. That's why Blackberries exist - to do blackberry stuff.

My beef is that people need to stop making excuses for Apple and start expecting more of them.

I am well aware of all the positives and negatives with the feature set of the iPhone. I was able to get by with some features that were missing and wait for them to maybe get implemented over time. One year ago it was a beta release in my eyes and I gave Apple the benefit of the doubt to improve upon the original design.

Here were are a year later and Apple broke many of the core apps that once worked fantastic. Many of which are well documented in the forums so I won't get into it. That, piled onto the stuff I wish it had has made me switch.

Is that not a valid concern? Did you own a first gen iPhone? It was leaps and bounds a better phone than what Apple has just put out. There should be no excuses. The phone is no longer beta IMO. It should get better with every release, not worse.

I do not like carrying around 2 devices, but Apple has forced me back into this position. I can't afford to carry around a phone that botches up the feature app, making calls!

Like .... what are you going on about?

Why Apple? Why don't you go complain to Nokia that they need better music management? Why don't you go complain to RIM that they need better built-in podcast support. Or maybe Sony, so they perfect the video playback on their phones. Every company "forces" you to carry multiple devices (at least in your world, it seems).

Apple puts out the best phone(s) in AGES, and all you can do is complain that it isn't utter utter perfection? sheesh

Maybe you're mom should complain to your dad that you're not a 7 foot genius star athlete who plays flawless piano with a full scholarship to the (post grad, if you're older) school of your choice, who's already making 6 figures ;)

Has anyone had the problem where even after you get a text message and check it, five mins later still get another alert for a text that you already checked? Happened to me twice already.

Why Apple? Easy, because they broke core features in the phone that worked flawless when they released the iPhone 3G and 2.x OS. Phones are supposed to get better, not worse. I wish I could go back to my old iPhone with 1.1.4. At least that phone worked.

I also don't appreciate the mom and dad comments. What's that got to do with this conversation? We are all adults here and don't need to be resort to treating each other like spoiled children. You're trying to treat me like some spoiled kid who demands perfection, which is not the case.

I made a valid point that the iPhone 3G is a downgrade phone wise when compared to the original iPhone. The slew of complaints in the forums should be obvious enough. People didn't complain like this about dropped calls, crappy internet, cracked cases, unlevel srcreens, and other various problems last year. Did you even own a first gen phone? Or did you just joing the forum now after buying a stripped down $200 iPhone?

Don't post much at all but had to add my opinion here.

mrtune you have to remember that on a forum you are mainly going to get people complaining about a problem that they want help with. How often do you see a thread saying ''I don't have any problems with my iPhone''. Very rarely if ever at all, it would just be a pointless thread.

The forum does not represent every iPhone owner out there. Many on here will be Apple fans, technology fans, or people who have come to the forum to complain about a problem they have. This is not the whole demographic of iPhone owners at all.

Myself, I did own a first gen iPhone, and have seen clear improvements with the 3G version. Sure its not perfect, but if it isn't perfect then what is there to improve on. If it's missing a core feature you feel it should have, then maybe you should find a phone that matches with you feature list.

I was very happy with my first gen iPhone, and am now more happy with my 3G. I don't want to speak for all iPhone owners, but I'm sure the vast majority have had little or no problems, and are as happy with their purchase as I am, and cannot wait to see what comes in future updates and revisions.

Gilbare,
I am aware of the missing features that I would like it to have and till recently I was able to deal without them because of other features that the iphone has and does well. But it threw me over the edge when the phone was dropping calls left and right. That was the core feature I was refering too. Also, the ipod app likes to skip a little when I receive sms or emails. It's all the new issues with core apps and features that once worked very well that took a back seat when apple released 2.x that makes me regret my upgrade

I have 2 other colleagues at work that suffer the same issues as myself. Both of which were upgraders like myself. We all prefer the 1.x software but are stuck with a new phone that doesn't support it.

Same tone?!

I'm glad they put this feature on - I liked having it on my old phone.

But to have the SAME TONE to remind you is bafflingly stupid. It sounds like you have got two messages. It should have a different tone for the reminder alert.

Surely this is common sense?

Im not making any excuses for Apple. I think the iPhone is perfect in the regards to notification. If i want to hear my Phone silent switch on, if i dont want to hear it. Silent switch off. I dont see why people need more than that.

can I add that I find it a little confusing with the multiple text alerts? I'll be talking to someone and my iPhone will beep with a text message and I don't wanna be rude, so I ignore it, then a little while later I'll hear another text message and now I'm thinking, wow someone must need my attention now, but when I look, it's just the first text message which says "Hey". By this time I get a little embarrassed to think someone was sending me multiple text messages.

The second alert is annoying to me. I wish I could turn it off.

This is just a result of Apple not thinking ahead and putting a LED alert on the outside of the phone.

Everyone is getting all bent out of shape about this. Its really very simple, everyone that has an iPhone paid a lot of money for it. That and the fact that it is an Apple product should mean small user friendly options are there for you to adjust. If you like it the way Apple set it up, then perfect, you just leave it and never have to worry about it. Don't go telling people they shouldn't except too much or don't really need something they want. This extra alert for text messages was very simple for Apple to add and should have a simple on/off button that would take very little effort on Apple's part to include. If you don't want the option, don't use it!!

Because not everyone is like you. People have reasons for why they want what they want. One size does not fit all. People have different needs and thus, different preferences.

we are all suckers for this damn phone sadly we cant have everything people but i also hate people who have to stop defending apple and get with the program that a advanced phone doenst have jack what a simple motorola has :/ great it has a ipod but it cant even forward a message  i do love this phone but when it comes to certain moments its like seriously you cant do this iphone what a drag... idk about the 3g but it works fine for me :D and apple give us options please for the love of god and for wozniak himself if hes asking then there has to be something you can do
