Growing concern from the mother ship:
How much earthly intelligence is embezzled into "very amusing" toys?

There are many interesting ideas and hard work for AR that can actually benefit a large number of people (e.g. intelligent camera analysis of food nutrient content, an improved version of the App Calorie Mama).

Well, nonsense always makes the easiest way to the public.

Yeah, except Apple had NOTHING to do with this, as has been pointed out a few times already.

Not too mention, I'm working on some ML and analytic viz code on my Apple equipment today :)

Some people use their Apple gear to do fun/silly AR enhancements on a social video chat platform, some of us are improving traumatic injury outcomes. Go figure :D

I'm looking forward to the days when people start having cosmetic surgery to look like their snapcat filters in real life.

We had a pretty serious conversation with a large cosmetic surgery group on the west coast about pre-surgery visualization (including the ability to do remote consultations).

Contrary to popular belief, technology can be used to have fun... Not every feature needs to be some super ultra pro only version that only "professionals" will use... No I don't use snapchat and have zero need for this, but my god... Let people have some fun...

I thought ARKit was supposed to be pretty easy to use? I made a Snapchat account with fake information to try this when I got my iPhone X and was really confused. The app has terrible UI/UX. This is what the kids are going crazy about? Deleted it. Kinda sad that we're two months away from WWDC and this is just now being implemented. Presumably Apple started working with them on this ahead of the iPhone X event last September, and even with their help it took this long? Not sure if that says more about Snapchat's team or ARKit.

If the demos of this stuff are at all representative, color me impressed. That is a massive improvement over regular snapchat filters.

You didn't hear? Everyone in the world now is a video editor or programmer these days.

Only for 13 year old girls.
If that was the case I would view this as a little novelty to not worry about. But I see some of my colleagues in their 50-60ies discovering this... and not the simple face swap with their grandchildren. Anyway, people should live their own life as they please.

You don't see the irony do you? Apple created this API backed by sophisticated technology in the X, and the best use for it is this childish crap. IOW the tech has minimal utility beyond face recognition.

Meanwhile, entire "we care about pro customers" product lines languish for years with no updates. Apple is indeed a special company.

What other use would you expect from Facial Recognition API's?
They care about PRO costumers, they released the iMac Pro and the new Mac Pro is coming soon.
