In most of Western Washington and Western Oregon any snow causes either a one or two hour delay to the start of classes. More than one inch will almost always close schools and some businesses. WSDOT and ODOT usually use only sand on the roads to give some traction, however it doesn't melt the snow, and because of the mountains, it is rare for the sun to shine after a "snow event" so that doesn't melt the snow either. One inch of snow can often stay around for a week or more before melting. WSDOT has been experimenting with using salt water, but it is not wide spread, they both use diluted de-icer in some major areas, but it to is not wide spread.
Portland is the worst when they have snow, as after 3 inches they usually ban travel in the city without chains, the light rail often shuts down, and busses run 24/7 in a vain attempt to keep the roads clear.

In Michigan on the other hand, I was around when it snowed 9" overnight. Nothing closed and nothing was delayed. They use salt which melts the snow and ice, plus the sun comes out and warms the pavement.

I was in Portland, it snowed like an inch and didn't stick on the road, people were putting on chains (no snow on the road, why would you use chains even if there was?) and schools and businesses were closed. It was the most ridiculous thing i ever saw.

We've had two this year.
There's nothing better than waking up at 6, wishing you could go back to sleep, then finding out you can sleep in.

I normally sleep until around noon, then just hang around the inter-web all day.

Lucky it rarely snows in Las Vegas last time it snow was last year it was 1inch of snow but Las Vegas is in a valley (elvt.2100ft in downtown)

When I lived in Arkansas, It might snow a quarter inch a year. Of course it was snow day.

In south Texas, it hasn't snowed since 1985. (According to people who have lived year that long)

The worst thing about college is that, there are no snow days. On the east side of Washington, it actually snows (unlike the 1-2 inches the westside has). We easily get over 6" of snow, and school still goes on.

I care to differ. We got about 10" last night and had a snow day today. I guess it just depends on where the faculty live, because the students here pretty much all live within a few blocks of campus, but some of the faculty live up to an hour away so they may have had serious issues getting here with that much snow.

We got some snow out here west of Boston (Worcester)... About 10 inches or so! Thankfully I had my driveway plowed early on, and there was only the small hassle of clearing the front walkway by hand.

I spent the day inside with my lady sipping hot coco, among other things... And we even ventured outside to build a snowman!

Wow that sounds fun! The last time I had a snow day was in January of 2007. Last nights weather said we might get snow Wednesday night or Thursday morning. I really hope it snows so i can skip my finals on thursday so I can get the whole day off and not just half a day! I don't make any sense.

They do it because snow is so rare in Portland and Seattle (because the water prevents cold snaps) that they have next to no experience driving in the snow, and think that chains would help. It also explains why idiots in 4x4s drive down the empty side streets at 50MPH and then slam on their brakes at a stop sign, and slide to the next intersection.

Wow you people are deprived. :p "Snow day" is almost unheard of here. I went to school once after what must've been a foot and a half dump. If we get a few inches it's like nothing's happened.

yeah... it snows once a year here in NC. MAYBE TWICE, if we're lucky!

We're always granted a flurry or so, but it tends to be high 30's when it snows, so it's completely pointless and melts as soon as it hits the floor.

When it flurries in the morning, the schools completely shut down. If there's even one patch of ice anywhere on a single bus rout, school's down. Sometimes they close school for the threat of snow. If it snows any bit that you can see on the grass, no one goes to church, people buy 6 cans of peanut butter to last them the year, and kids are bummed because the snow is a rip off.

But sometimes we'll get a good 4-8 inches and it's the bomb.
When it snows, I am out there having a good time!

How much would you guys charge to send that snow over here, and would it be exempt from taxes?

I had to go to school with about 4 inches of snow on the ground, and the streets weren't plowed.

I did get the privilege of living through the first snow day my school had in 25 years though, which was awesome!

It just started snowing here! FINALLY!!!!

Georgia hasnt had snow in years:D

And its coming down heavy!

Snowdays? Pssh, out here in SoCal I only had school ever close for an ash day (so many fires going on so close to school that there was so much ash in the air it was unsafe to go outside for more than a few minutes so school got shutdown). Unfortunately, my college doesn't believe in these or Veterans Day for some reason.

Snow day? When I get a snow day I'm out there snowskating, boarding, or playing winter airsoft in the woods, airsoft in the snow is great, you can track your foes, its sweet. When it snows I turn my property into a snowskate empire.
