I for one can tell you why Apple “fanboys” are the way they are (being that I have been one from the moment I open my brand new LC3 box back in the EARLY '90s.)

It comes done to all the years of snide comments from PC users. Apples aren't "serious" computers, they are going to go out of business, nobody writes apps for the Mac, etc. It's been a long hard pill to swallow, and some of us are a little bitter. So now that more PCers are making the switch, we are having a tendency to have that "we-told-ya-so" mentality.

I hope this helps explain it, and please bare with us! ;)

That explains the old grumpy Mac fans but what about the younger generation who weren't even potty trained back then?

I'm going to assume you're sincere. I don't think there's any denying Windows 7 is a bigger release overall especially for end-users than Snow Leopard.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Features_new_to_Windows_7

Not an awkward question at all.

The Vista -> 7 path is much more "impacting" for users. 7 addresses a ton of issues with Vista, such as poor performance, high requirements, and bad compatibility. Granted, 7 is based on the same kernel as Vista, but the hardware support is (or should be) much better this time around.

Since Snow Leopard is basically a refresh of Leopard, adding some performance improvements here and there, as well as laying the groundwork for future stuff, it doesn't have much in the way of forward-facing changes. Windows 7 does the background improvements as well as the forward-facing stuff.

A lot has been retooled in the UI. While I still prefer the layout of the classic look, the categorization of elements is more logical than in Vista. The taskbar has almost been completely redone. Vista always felt like XP with a new skin and more problems. 7 really does feel like a new version of the OS.

I don't want this to get into a big discussion of Windows 7, and frankly, I'm not the guy for it, so I'll cut it there. I will say that while Snow Leopard is our operating system of choice, that doesn't mean we can't get excited about new features in a rival OS. New features means more competition means more new features means new stuff means better operating systems means happy customers. Competition is a good thing.

I think I worded my question badly, I was absolutely being sincere. I don't know as much about the the technologies behind Windows 7 as I probably should. Thanks for the info guys, much appreciate. Will do some reading.

Uhm, he's right about the Finder. It sucks. Windows Explorer sucks also, but Finder sucks even more. He makes a few good points, and this is one of them... really a no-brainer. Finder is dreadful, both as visualizer and as mover of folders. That said, 90% of his review is rubbish... he's clearly biased against Apple.

I just wish Apple fans could be objective. It's not like there's nothing that windows is better at. File system management is one area where OS X is worse.

I so wish Apple would scrap it and start from scratch.

I specifically meant his issue with the finder. Its a complete non-issue.

Snow Leopard is NOT an update, it doesn't run on PowerPC therefor it's a new underlying architecture therefor a new version of OS X. If you couldn't install a 10.5.x update on PowerPC I say that would certainly make it different underneath. It's like Windows 95 and 98, sure they look the same but one of them will suck more than the other.

I was a complete freakin fanboy up until about 2007, and I don't know why. It was because I never tried a mac and the only thing I had to go off of was freaking iPods that all the hippies were carrying. I couldn't even pick out a mac screenshot in a lineup! Yet when someone wanted to argue I was there with a box full of "yeh well there's no viruses because nobody cares about Mac" and "macs are just for idiots who can't actually LEARN to use a computer"

Yep, it's true, I would basically pee on anything Apple at that time because I was ignorant. NOW, since I've switched, I look at EVERYTHING with an open mind and I'm far more technically educated. Before I wanted a mac I thought memory was where your data was stored o.o

Then of course in 2007 Chris Pirillo wouldn't shut up about them, so I researched and found such amazing things and then I had to have one, like REALLY HAD to have it!! So after Leopard came out I got a white MacBook, the rest is history...

Nothing changes dude, ever heard of the term "word of mouth"? Your question can also go towards the new generation of the Windows crowd, why are they still so smug? I still hear it today, Macs don't have any software, Macs "CAN'T" play games, as if they are not capable, you "CAN'T" do real work on Macs, I need to use Office, Macs don't do that". I actually had the dumbest thing said to me the other day, "I have an Apple iPod and iTunes on my PC, I would switch to a Mac but iTunes is only on PC".

This kinda crap sparks an annoyance amongst Mac users against the PC crowd. If people would take the time and learn more about stuff rather than make ignorant statements such as Paul Thurrott there might be less poor treatment amongst multiple classes of computer users.

Perhaps it's simply minority angst. Minorities, whether religious, ethnical, political or in this case brand faithful always have an awkward relationship with the majority that manifests itself by isolation, aggression, secret handshakes, internal lingo, us vs. them rhetoric, and an unshakeable sense of being prosecuted. They huddle together in a corner and pep talk eachother into believing that they're special chosen ones, which makes them feel better about being the odd ones out, and this becomes their identity. They're often under the misapprehension that the majority is another club just like theirs, only much bigger... but being in the majority isn't really a factor that unites, the 'members' have no awareness of the 'club' because they're too diverse and not really concerned about whatever it is that unites them. Windows users cover every corner of the planet but it's not like they greet eachother in the street by winking and doing some sort of "W" sign... it's not an identity any more than being a meat eater is. OK, so some people are vegans and vegetarians but that doesn't bond me with the next meat eater.

Um, hold on a sec, if there were no ignorant people like that, Microsoft would be a video game developer and windows would have died a looooong time ago.

I heard this guy, he was about 45, say to me "Yeh that's neat, I was thinking about getting a Mac but isn't it...like, they can only run one program at a time?"

-.- Maybe back when the interface looked like this-

Apple needs to stop making commercials with Mac's nose in the air or people will continue thinking Macs are just fancy computers that also run Windows (most people run Windows and don't even know it!!!) They need to show the damn Operating System in action! Like they do with the iPhone!

Hell I bet after 2 demonstrational commercials these things will FLY OFF THE SHELF! HOPE YOU'RE PAYING ATTENTION, PHIL!
