So, I'm planning on buying a new 15" Macbook Pro through this deal offered by my company. The deal is really sweet; I get the Macbook Pro with a 3 year Applecare warranty for $1800. Problem is, I wanted to have Snow leopard pre-installed on the computer. However, the deal expires at the end of the month. Do you think Apple will give me some kind of reduced rate for Sow Leopard since I recently bought a Mac?

Spending approx $129 after getting a good deal on a MacBook Pro is far from a dilemma.

Honestly, I can't see Apple charging $129 for Snow Leopard. There are still people who haven't upgraded from Tiger after over 300 features have been added to Leopard. Snow Leopard doesn't have many features! I can't see how Apple is going to be able to market an OS that doesn't boast any new features. People are just going to go "my machine is fine the way it is" and save their $129, especially in this economy.

On the flip side, maybe I'll those Tiger users will suddenly decide to upgrade, since they'll be two revisions behind. I was going to upgrade to Leopard when the Leopard + iLife + iWork package was released, but then I decided I could wait for Snow Leopard and get the new OS. And since I'm a student, it still works out to the same price or less to buy them separately than the package costs. :)

But agreed, SL will be a tough sell for anyone running Leopard.

Right now, there isn't much new in the Snow Leopard beta version that I have heard. I'm sure Apple will have some pretty amazing features by the time it comes out in June or later.

if Apple was really nice, they'd offer Snow Leopard as a free upgrade from Leopard. now THAT is wishful thinking:D

Apple? Free upgrade? haha.

Ever hear of OS X 10.1 (aka Puma)? Free update.

Personally, I can see the viability of Apple offering Snow Leopard as a more reasonable priced, or even a free, update to Leopard. While I like Leopard, it's never felt like a polished product the way Tiger did. I think Snow Leopard is meant to correct that. This is partly reflected in the name as well.

Not sure how they would offer the update were it free to just those with Leopard. Even if Snow Leopard is Intel only, that still leaves about 2 years of Intel Tiger machines.

Though, for a system that's planned to be released around June, they sure are keeping their lips sealed. I wouldn't be surprised if they pushed the release date back to focus on iphone 3.0 like they did with Leopard.
