perfect, thanks.

Regarding your soapbox speech: that's ok. I'm not going to abuse the licence, I will pay my share.

I agree with you on your commitment to customers' honor. The low fees for SL do really make it easier on this, too. (as apple does in general. although I sometimes doubt if they fully earn this support by their customers/fans. sometimes...)

They're definitely not perfect and have made missteps on their treatment of customers/fans/independent developers but, taken as a whole, they provide a much better experience than most other companies IMHO.

I've been wondering about this for a little while now and was hoping to get some answers.

I want to upgrade to Snow Leopard from Leopard and everyone knows the upgrade is going to be $29.99. I was wondering if I could find 4 other friends and buy the family pack for $49.99 instead and split the cost for 5 licenses. So that way it would only cost about $10 for everyone to upgrade.

Is there any problem with this? Will this be possible even though these machines are owned by different people?

Unfortunately, the license for the family pack doesn't allow you to do this. The license allows you to install one copy onto each of up to five computers in the same household, or by college students who would normally live in that household while they live on a campus.

Talking about students, if i buy a family pack this year with flatmates....all under the same roof as per the rules....what happens when we leave uni next year and thus wont be living together under same roof???

You'll all have to upgrade: Apple will announce the new "iRoof" extension on September 7th, wich will be available to all family-pack licensees as an up-to-date upgrade for a reduced price. ...

If you can't afford it, you can't have it. It's as simple as that. The purchase of Snow Leopard isn't required to continue using a Mac. It will function perfectly fine with Leopard.

I'm aware of this, Apple was nice enough to disable the self destruct system in 10.5.8 if you do not upgrade to Snow Leopard... hehe. But then again, the point of the thread had nothing to do with NEED, it was all about WANT.
