Here are several questions I have:

1. How long does installation take?
2. Are there as many bugs as people are claiming?
3. Is there a noticeable difference in speed and overall performance?
4. Is it possible to do a clean install?
5. Has anyone installed it and just went back to their previous OSX?

1. About 30-40 mins on a MacBook, probs faster on a Mac Pro as it has a faster optical drive
2. there were but most have been squashed in 10.6.1 and the upcoming 10.6.2. users might have trouble with apps that arent SL compatible.
3. i found there was a noticeable speed improvement with 1 gig of RAM
4. yes, but you have to reboot into the install DVD and erase your disk from Disk Utility.
5. dont know. but if you dont do a Time Machine backup after you upgrade you can restore your Leopard backup or do a clean install of Leopard.

One thing that bugs me that was in Leopard but not in SL was the debug feature for Screen Sharing. If you go to your Finder and look in the sidebar, it lists networked computers. Theres a debug command for SS and it allows you to select from a list instead of typing the host name. It works in 10.5, not 10.6. Anyone know a workaround?

Screen sharing between a Mac and PC on same network

To Rich Thomas et al:

A couple of months ago, I crossed over from PC and Windows to iMac and Snow Leopard. Apple Support turned me on to iChat to screen share between 2 iMacs. I tried that on the same Network and it worked like clockwork - one of the best discoveries. I can finally assist my mother who also crossed over from the realm of the PC and Windows to Mac World. The question here is whether we would have any issues on two separate networks, once I take her iMac to her location!

Separately, I would very much like to use a Notebook PC running Windows XP Media Center and another one running Windows 7 to access my iMac (running Snow Leopard) on the same network. The objective is to launch iTunes Library and other audio, video, and powerpoint applications that are on my iMac to remotely stream Music, Pictures, and Videos wirelessly via the notebooks, which I would then connect to TV using S-Video. I thought, screen sharing between iMac and the PCs would do the job. I could then use a wireless keyboard and mouse BlueToothed to the Notebook in the living room to access my iMac in another room.

I downloaded AIM and Yahoo Messenger. Neither one supports screen sharing between Mac and PC.

Also, does anyone know about the HD Fury that converts HDMI to Component Video and Audio and would it make that big a difference as opposed to using S-Video connection between Notebook PC and TV for the purposes that I stated?

Babylon

Hi all;
Since i upgraded to Snow Leopard, the 'search in Babylon' option ceased to exist on the right-clik of the mouse. Any ideas? Tanx.

Folders in Stacks

Hello everyone, I’ve been disappointed by the new way to browse folders in stacks in Snow Leopard. I’d like to bring it back to the Leopard way, that clicking a folder in stack will open it in Finder window. I’ve tried to search for a solution but it looks like I’m the only person in the world who wants this. Does anyone know a solution for me?

CMD-Click and then CMD-↓

If you drag a file from your downloads STACK directly into your trash, it won't let you put it back. You have to delete files FROM within the Finder in order to make that feature work. Besides... how often do you delete files from the Dock?

ya and it also doesn't work if your file is open and you press command delete and you can't put it back either

new wifi thingy :)

I don't have time to read the whole post, so sorry if someone already said this, but I noticed that the wifi sign in the menu bar scrolls up and down when it's searching for networks. cool! :p

Hey, how can I make VLC my default media player? At the moment its Quicktime and does not play many formats!

not sure, except to left click on a movie file, select "open with" and check "always open with" when you select vlc.

hey perian and flip 4 mac will open a lot of stuff. well, perian can, flip4mac just kinda blows, but it works

As a newly converted Mac user I continue to notice new great things every day. This is probably old news to most people, but today I noticed if I click and hold down for a short wile on an application icon in the dock, all the windows connected to that application are shown in Exposé. Very handy indeed!

Also, as a sidenote.. I used to work with 2 monitors on my PC and liked it a lot. I thought it would be difficult to find another monitor with the resolution of the 27" iMac, so I've just been relying on Spaces so far (which, by the way, works great). Today I tried plugging my old 22" monitor in, and.. it just worked. It was no problem extending the screen even with a monitor of different resolution. The tool to set how the screens should be placed is great, and everything worked as soon as I plugged it in. After, I installed an A3-ink printer. Same thing, plugged it in and it was ready. No driver installation, no selections, it's just there, and with a pretty picture of it to boot. I just love that.

Lesser Known Gems in Snow Leopard - Please post yours

Every day I try to learn something new, often this includes something on my Mac, today I stumbled on a little Gem that I never knew about Snow Leopard... You don't need to create icons anymore to show a custom image for a file you can just use any old .jpeg file (you don't even need to re size). Here's How:

First copy (cmd+c) the picture you want to use then right click the file where you want the new icon. Something like the menu pop up (Pictured below) will pop up. Then select the icon (Top Left) and paste (cmd+v) - viola the image you copied becomes the icon for the file.

If you have any other neat Snow Leopard Tips please post them here...

I can't say for sure for leopard - But I do know in Tiger you had to use icon files, the point is that you can now use any .jpeg image and you don't even have to re size it.

In Tiger I had to get an icon editor plugin for Photoshop to create custom icons now its a whole lot easier.

Ok some questions.
I am running Leopard on a macbook 2.0 ghz(pre-firewire).

1)Will I hurt my system if I do NOT do a clean install?
2) Will I benefit from hard drive reduction?
3)Is it faster/snappier?
4)Do you feel it gives a better performance running multiple apps and flash?
5) Leopard apps, do they work fine under snow leopard or do they need special updated version?
6) I heard it was buggy, and some regretted installing it. Did they fix the bugs?

I know similar questions were answered above, but that was like back in Nov.

1. No idea. Depends on what applications or plugins you're currently using.
2. Not sure what you mean here? You should be able to answer that. Do you need more space?
3. Yes
4. Flash sucks always
5. Most Leopard apps will work. Check with some of your apps to make sure they're the most recent versions anyway.
6. It's not buggy. People don't know what they're doing. Snow Leopard has been running way better than Leopard for me. I haven't had a single problem. Loving it.

for questoin #2 , I mean if I don't do a clean install, will I get size reduction? or is it for clean installs only?
