Foomatic/Ghostscript

I was able to get my 1020 working with the foomatic/ghostscript solution.

Here are the steps I followed:

1) Navigate to:
http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/foomatic

2) download and install both Ghostscript and Foomatic from the above page.

3) download and install the foo2zjs installer package (dmg). You can find it here:
http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Drivers/foo2zjs.shtml

Make sure you read the instructions for the foo2zjs installer. After it's been installed, you'll need to configure the printer to use the foo driver through the System Preferences panel. Also, there's a script file in the "helpers" folder called "load_LaserJet_firmware_v4" which you'll need to copy to your desktop and run every time you power up the printer.

Hope this helps,

Cam.

Thank you "insecto"

I tried your solution, and it did work for me.

I have a 2007 "Aluminum" 20" iMac.

For others who are contemplating this, it does take some time to do all of the things "insecto" outlines. I estimate it took me about 1 hr 45 min from start to finish.

[Before trying this, I had downloaded the Apple SL update, (no help). I found and downloaded a "HP printer" file from Apple (designed for SL), no help.]

Good luck to everyone else!

HP 1020 will not work with the new snow leopard

I have had a similar experience with HP. But later Gutenprint came up with a driver that let me print with the HP1020. Since adding Snow Leopard nothing works. Maybe Gutenprint will come up with a driver that will work with Snow Leopard. Hope it's soon.
Given the fact that HP will not provide a driver for MAC users is very sad. Even though I LOVE this printer I just can't buy another HP product. What a waste.

Someone mind posting exactly how they made their printer work? I'll give it a try later tonight.

Also, for those who have a broken/junk printer, you can trade it in at OD and get a HP Officejet Pro 8000 for $25. I might go that route if I can't get my 1020 to work.

At my wits' end, and after studying everything on the net for almost 2 weeks, I got my printer working in SL by following the instructions here
http://www.pcworld.com/businesscent...ernetnetworked_printers_and_snow_leopard.html

It had nothing to do with printer drivers or firmware (all of which I had updated ad nauseam). I had to reset the IP address of the printer, and then all was set to go. I was really surprised and VERY happy!

Working

I got my 1020 to work under SL... Downloaded the HewlettPackardPrinterDrivers2.2.dmg, installed it, added the 1020 using the "HP LaserJet 1022, 1.1.0.182" driver. Works just like it did in Leopard. :)

I've tried to install my laserjet 1020 with the HewlettPackardPrinterDrivers2.2.dmg i've downloaded from Apple site, choosed the "HP LaserJet 1022, 1.1.0.182" driver and it didnt worked......

What else can be tried?

thanks

This did not work here.

I printed after selecting the new 1022 driver, the queue suggested a successful job after printing, but the printer never printed one single letter.

I am completely lost now.
After having installed all the ghost script magic and foo… and reading through the install file, that came with the foo… driver, I have headache of unimaginable amounts and no more nerves to fiddle anymore with driver files on a rather fresh SL upgrade. I feel like back with Windows - how disgusting.

The old HP 1020 will be scrapped now and with any old Windows PC, that needs an upgrade to a proper computer, I will throw out the other 1020s in the departments too.

I look for real printers now - for sure not from Hewlett Packard.

Can anybody suggest a nice website for office grade printers with proper print cost estimation?

Try Again

Hello all HP 1020 Users.
I contacted HP on Oct. 1st, their reply by email was. HP is committed to provide MAC OSX 10.6 support for HP LaserJet 1020. I started up the MAC this AM and the printer works, That is using driver HP LaserJet 1022,1.1.0.182
Give it another try.

Give it another try.

I gave it another try, downloading the HP printer update 2.2 again and convoluting my hard drive with more than 400 MB of completely unnecessary HP waste driver software.

Again, it does not work.
The printer can be installed with the 1022 driver, the printer queue runs, accepts print jobs and prints.

The printer does not make one sound not does it print.

The driver software indicates a successful printing, even though the printer did not move one millimeter of paper, nor made one sound.

The printer ran fine in Leopard. the Printer runs fine with Windows computers.

For now, I postponed the addition of new printers in my office and have my assistant printed my files by sending my prints as pdf files by mail to he - what a waste of time and effort.

As soon, I found the ideal Macintosh capable office printer, this status will be terminated.

How does one properly uninstall not needed printer drivers in OS X?
I don't feel like having a 400 MB ancient HP printer driver collection sitting on my harddrive.

I tried again as well and had the same experience as feuerschlange. The software goes through the motions and indicates a completed print job, but the printer is completely inactive.

amaneejit, I'm surprised HP told you that the 1020 would be supported for Mac. In their own forums, HP employees have been telling people that it will not be (http://bit.ly/2i9uMz). Has anyone else had word from HP that they will in fact be providing a solution for the 1020?

Help!

Follow the instructions here exactly. I can confirm that this works (so far) for my 1020 on Snow Leopard.

No idea if it's going to be possible to get the old driver to work but the 10.6 Printers folder looks quite a bit different. I wouldn't count on it.

Hi, I tried following your instructions but I got stuck when using Terminal. After putting in the second command "sudo port selfupdate" it asked for my password and i put it in but then it didnt accept it or something and now when i put in that command it says :

sudo: port: command not found

any advice? Thanks in advance for your time!

Apple has a working fix

I got an update from Apple's "Software Update..." in the Apple Menu, and it worked.

I had downloaded the HP Printer Drivers from apple.com when SL was released and then got an update today. The same link that 8CoreWhore had given.

My HP LaserJet 1020 works like it should on Snow Leopard (10.6.2)!

That's two, hopefully it'll work for me too. If it does, I'm going to write HP a nice thank you note. They're not really obligated to support their printers through the end of time you know.

Nov 16 Update Installed 1020 still not working

I saw a couple of people were able to get their 1020s working after last night's software update. I tried it but nothing printing, although it goes to queue and supposedly prints. Can those of you who got it working post specifically what you did? Thanks.

HP 1020 working w/Snow Leopard

Received a prompt for a software update this morning (11/24/09) for HP and Canon drivers (both were relatively small files 7 or 8 MB). Installed them and found the HP 1022, 1.2.0.224 driver, which I chose. Then printed a document. The update I installed last week, for some reason, didn't include this driver. Anyway, that'll save me some money.

Ditto as above for me.

And thanks to all who posted in this thread. I found it via Google and it saved me because "the big boss" where I work was not pleased that his Mac couldn't print to his laserjet 1020 printer.

Y'ALL SAVED MAH JAWB... :D

I have mine set up the same way. I used the drivers from http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Drivers/foo2zjs.shtml and it prints just fine for me.

I just got the LaserJet 1020 today for free but didnt realize it was not Mac compatible at first. Some quick googling lead me to this, among other threads and that was the solution that worked for me.

Print with HP 1020 and mac os X 10.6 using open source drivers

Hello
I have an HP 1020 and macbook pro with os 10.6.2 installed.
I was able to set up printing to the 1020 fairly easily using the following steps:

1. visit: http://www.linuxfoundation.org/collaborate/workgroups/openprinting/macosx/hpijs#Package_Description

and download Ghostscript and Foomatic-RIP .dmg files and follow the installation procedures.

2. visit: http://mac.softpedia.com/progDownload/foo2zjs-Download-33222.html

and obtain the foo2zjs 1.1.2 driver, this is the driver for the hp 1020.
This is also a .dmg file and follow the normal installation procedure. During the install, a terminal window will open asking you to select your printer (hp 1020 from the list) and if you want to remove a copy of some temporary files from your desktop, once you select this the installation will finish.

3. Open the system preferences and select the print & fax pane.

4. Click the "+" symbol in the left hand corner and you should be able to add the HP LaserJet 1020 (make sure printer is connected by USB).

5. Below, click the dialogue box next to Print using and you should see HP LaserJet 1020 Foomatic/foo2zjs, after selecting this you should be all set for printing!!

Let me know how it works out!
I have had a bunch of problems using this printer on various macs in the past but this solution seems to be working so far and was very straightforward. I will attempt on a white macbook next to see if the results are the same.

It works

Hey, everyone.

I made some instructions that are as simple as I can possibly imagine. It is exactly what I did and I am able to print to my 1020. No guarantees that this will work for you and if you know absolutely nothing about the command line it may be better to steer clear. That being said, it's so cookie-cutter that you should be able to do it regardless.

Standard disclaimer: this may not work for you and could potentially screw up your Snow Leopard install (although that's probably pretty unlikely).

Download the two files here: http://idisk.mac.com/geoffchapman-Public?view=web. One is a text file with the instructions and the other is a .zip file - expand it and you will find the Automator app I describe in the text file. FYI this app does not do the install for you (although I wish it did) - it's only to help with a small bit once you've got everything done.

Please post back with your system config and whether or not it worked. I am going to be around today - I'll try to get back to any quick questions. But I am going to be out of the country for two weeks starting tomorrow so at that point you're on your own.

Good luck!

Hi Insecto,

Thanks so much for the time you took to explain this. It takes forever but it's far better than having no printer. I haven't tried the Automator app but given the success of your other instructions I assume it works flawlessly.

Again, thank you very much indeed.
