Imagine if all the people you wanted to call did the same!

I think MOST people do this. I keep my phone in the car 90% of the time no on my person. At home I have an answering machine and I don't pick up the phone if it rings. To many telemarketers and junk calls.

What I'd really like is a good, non spoof-able caller-ID system. Then I would want a phone that routes calls based in caller-ID. The people on my short list would cause the phone to ring others would go to voice mail directly and those with no caller-ID would get a message telling them to enable caller-ID and redial. In addition the system would now my schedule and re-route calls to the office or home or cell based on time of day, day of week and have a voice mail to e-mail gateway too. That last part was great because voice message end up in Google's gmail as WAV files that you can click on

I actually built an Asterisk based PBX and had it do all of the above. But it was not worth the hassle to maintain it. (But is was a geat system. See here for more info http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/index.php?page=Asterisk )

Well yes. That's pretty much the method of most petty theft rings. Go to computer science school, then await the day someone allows triangulation of location in software. Create software that people will buy or download, then discover the approximate location of a computer you'd like to steal, hope it's somewhere nearby, then break in and hope it's actually there. Step 3- profit!

Genius.

Step - 4 knock on the door by policeman thanks to GPS theft tracking system ;)

So here's my wild speculation: apple event, possibly wwdc, where they announce (amongst other things) the multi-touch api's, with a new set of gestures built in for any app to use- demo- this is the gesture for copy and this one for paste.

One more thing: these gestures work with the iphone 3.0 software (including copy and paste)!

We value being connected WAY to much, to the point where it's annoying.

You know, the big red button wants to be your friend, give him a try as he likes helping out in these situations.

I see your point and if it works for you then fair play, but I personally hate not being able to get hold of someone when I need them. You call someone when you need them right at that point, if its viable to leave a message then its more than likely you can just tell them when you see them or contact them by email or something.

Fair point about keeping it for emergencies though. My parents do that. Although thinking about it - I can never get hold of them when I need to. :p Not sure that I need to know exactly where they are though.

Will it get to the point where kids will be able to secretly check which shops their parents are buying christmas presents from?!?! ...:apple:!

Only if you have your cell phone on all the time. Mine is only on when I want to make a call. I think my cell phone should be for my convenience, not everyone else's.

What about when there is an emergency and someone needs to get a hold of you?

So does this mean that an attacker will be able to find out where my computer is and steal it? Thanks, but no thanks....

Never comment again.

Advertising

Apple will eventually include GPS on their machines.

I see this as new advertising tool. You visit a web site and it uses your location to find the most likely add that you will respond to and serves it on your computer. Or open Safri, it realizes you are at Starbucks and offers you the menu for ordering, paying and when its done they just call your name.

Heck if I were an advertising company (like Google) I would PAY Apple to put GPS modules in their mobile computers.

I feel that CoreLocation for a laptop/desktop is a little unnecessary.
But I guess it wouldn't hurt....

I suspect this has more to do with portables & tablets and the like.
Not so much, say, a Mac Pro.

And as many have pointed out, I can fathom ways that it could actually hurt. ;)

Finally, an intelligent response on these forums.

That's what I do. I think everyone should. Leave a message and I'll get back to you. If you're my child or spouse, then yes I want to be interrupted. Everyone else can wait.

Word. If it's important leave a message.

I've said this for years. It's pretty funny when people say "I don't know how I'd manage without my mobile." Err, the same way you did before they were invented...

How exactly does my position get triangulated on my desktop or laptop computer without GPS or Cell signal? The 1st gen iPhone does it by cell tower triangulation or by observing sourrounding wifi signals that have been effectively geotagged. If it is using the later method then there is NO TRIANGULATION. AppleInsider's stupidity really takes me by surprise sometimes .

If an attacker has enough access to your system, it doesn't matter whether there is an API or not, they can already collect MAC addresses of nearby routers and thus use a WiFi positioning service to determine your location.

Ha ha...right!

Fact is, the government (or the 'attackers' mentioned earlier) can already track your computer. The 'bad guys' already have access to that kind of thing. So Apple figures, why shouldn't consumer get some benefits out of it too?

And THAT's what makes people complain? Wow.

I'm getting tired of everything knowing where I am all the time...

I could not agree more! The commercial I see for the App that lets friends (and maybe NOT friends) know where you are? Forget that, too! I have enough demands on my time as it is and there are times I want to disconnect yet still have my phone on without fear someone from my office will find me at the coffee shop while I am surfing and catching up on e-mails.

I will pass - chalk this up as bad idea.

So when will multi-touch come to the desktops? I want a multi-touch keyboard! NOW!!!

yes exactly. I am so tired of cleaning that damn mighty mouse so that it finally works decently. Bring on the MULTI-TOUCH keyboard. NOW

You never receive calls ? ;-)

Not on my cell phone. The only time I would receive a call is when I have prearranged that someone may need to call me at a certain time. Then I'll have my phone on, otherwise it's off except when I'm making a call.

Imagine if all the people you wanted to call did the same!

I'd leave a message and they would get back to me when it's convenient for them. Holy cow, have we really become dependent on being able to access everyone all the time?

What about when there is an emergency and someone needs to get a hold of you?

I'm not unreachable; in addition to my cell phone I have a work number and a home number, both with message machines, and four different email addresses. I'm sure they'll find me if it's important.

A couple days ago I read a story in the local paper about land lines being taken out of dorm rooms because all the students have cell phones now. Apparently it's standard for every student to have their own line in his or her room. When I went to college we had one pay phone on each floor, and no one had ever heard of cell phones. Somehow we managed to survive without being instantly reachable. In my opinion it's not always a good thing.

You can already tell the city rather well by using people's IP. I often get banners telling me there are hot girls waiting for me in <insert nearest large city with awkward translation>. It's funny when you travel across the globe and the same girls (yes, they have pictures and all on the ads) are always in the same town... like stalkers. Oh, and they don't age either (it says the age next to the name).

Personally, I'd like to have the choice whether I want to give an advertizer or sercive my location, but in a non-annoying way. A popup asking me if I want to give out my location is NOT a non-annoying way. Sadly, lots of apps on my iPhone wanna know where I am for no valid reason.
