4" is completely inadequate.

Oh, we're talking about phones? Ok, I'm cool with 4 inches. I do like the idea of having the whole front glass be the screen, but they would need to figure out an elegant way to add a physical home button (for hard restarts, etc.) somewhere.

4.3" would make me EXTREMELY happy and I would have considered buying. I just wanted MOAR width!

I thought girth mattered more? lol

good post

baffles me what apple did with the screen. Maybe iphone 6 will add the width

i thought they would go with 4.3inch 3:2 to make it backwards compatible. Also still quite a bit of bezel at the top and bottom expected better

Honestly, the more I think about it, I think that if apple does any increase they'd probably do option 4, but figure out some "magical" way to get the apps to scale appropriately. None of the options really seem very likely to me... number 2 I think would be the next most likely, but I can't really imagine apple going down in ppi while everybody else is moving up...

Why would they change 16:9? It is standard for screens today.

Hopefully next iPhone is FullHD 1920x1080.

Nobody else?

I am surprised nobody came up with this at MR(or i missed it).

1152x768
Aspect ratio 3:2
4.0 inch screen size

You could use Ipad apps on that res with very small black bars on each end.

You would still be able to run native iphone apps, with bars on the sides and small bars up and down. (but who would care, I would use the ipad version of that app instead)

This would make it a lot easier for developers with less fragmentation:

-1024x768 for ipad 1/2/mini?
-2048x1536(2x)1024x768) for new ipad
-a slightly taller(1152x768) version for the iphone 5

They also could have gone 1366x768 if they really wanted to go 16:9 and still get the ipad app compatibility, but than the black bars on the sides would be bigger, running an Ipad app.
But they could have done this on the current iphone 5 screen size, and let the developers alter their ipad apps instead of the current iphone apps.

Anyhow, Apple should have gone 768Pin my opinion. This would be more transparant, and should cause less compatibilty problems in the future.

What they should do is to implement 16:9 and 1920x1080 both for Ipad and Iphone.

I can see where you are going, but the ipad and iphone have different purposes. The ipad is more than just a lager iphone touchscreen.
You should do some reading and check the motivations/philosophy of SJ for doing this.

The ipad isn' t made for just watching movies/tv. Perhaps they could make an Icinema or something like that, with a 16:9 or 21:9 aspect ratio.

This is what I was hoping the iPhone 5 was going to look like:
iPhone%205.jpg

By reducing the bezel they could easily fit a 4.3" screen without making the phone much if any larger.

720p, just doesn' t make any sense in the current line up of resolutions, and this means adding another res for developers.
They could have gone 768p, the same width as an ipad or the current iphone 5 res:640p. Adding 720p doesn' t make sense.

but perhaps they will be relasing a 2272x1280, 16:9 ipad 4 in 2013, and dropping all old aspect ratios to create a new 16:9 standard aspect ratio for apple.

It could be a logical move because apple is trying to make a move in the tv-business(hardware or content) and the standard aspect ratio for television these days is 16:9.

Now back to the iphone.

I think there will be an Iphone without a physical home button.

Apple does have a few patents in which a technology is described that enables users to feel buttons or icons on a screen.

http://www.freepatentsonline.com/7920131.pdf

So a future iphone will be able to display full screen content, and you will still be able to feel a virtual home button on the display, without seeing it.

What I would of loved to have seen from the Iphone 5 is the "WIDTH" with hardly ANY black free edge, something like this ...

Thats how it should have looked like!

They could have done it but choosed to make it the thinniest smartphone instead. Wrong decision.

It took Apple five years to, begrudgingly go 4". They're not going any bigger, ever. Better get used to it.
