I work for a hotel. If somebody breaks something they will be charged. If we were to accuse somebody of breaking something a week after they stay, though, we wouldn't have a leg to stand on. For example, if somebody smokes in a non-smoking room, we have to see physical evidence (like butts) in order to charge them a clean-up fee. If somebody pays cash their room is inspected before they get their deposit back.
 
I had a similar thing happen to me in Canada. I was accused of making more than $200 of long distance calls to Boston. I don't even know anyone in Boston. I explained this, they called the numbers in question. Come to find out it was the maid using my phone.
Now that is bad maid service.

You wouldn't think anyone would dare to do it though!

She should've been more subtle and made 100 $2 calls from 100 different rooms... That would've taken some tracking down. :)
