The thing is, entry level for ANY manufacturer is, well.... ENTRY LEVEL.

Apple will put the cheapest screen in their new bottom notebook because they are trying to recup their investment into the new design.

Then of course, like Firewire, if you want a "pro" screen....

(ducks....)

If Apple expects their customers to pay a premium for their products, they should absolutely give them the premium in comparison with the competition. One day the operating system isn't going to make up for the lack of attention to the usability of the hardware in their machines.

Tell that to the shareholders.

It's easy as an armchair CEO (ie consumer) to say put the best screen in the Macbook so that the premium we pay can be matched with other PCs on the market. But do you consider the financial logistics behind doing so? As already mentioned, Apple will be taking a hit on their gross margins in Q4 2008.

Hey NC, you mentioned in one of your posts that you're an Apple shareholder. If you want apple to start putting premium screens into their laptops etc, that will further reduce the gross margin of Apple. Considering price point and sales stays static. Add that to the fact the economy is in peril and Apple products are simply discretionary consumer spending. Cost of goods increases by implementing better screens on macbooks, etc.

I'll leave it at that for you people to connect the dots.

Let me get this straight. People are complaining about Apple using a cheap display on their new entry-level notebook...

I've got a crappy screen on my older entry level Compaq notebook...

I can go out and buy a very usable $500 laptop right now. $1300 sure as hell isn't entry level, and neither is $1600. Pardon us if we expect above-average components at that price.
