if the mac pros ever do update, anyone get the feeling a special note might be included ... "oops, we meant to do this in March, sorry :)"

maybe the update is taking so long because they are going to launch it in conjuncture with a 64 bit final cut studio???!!!!! That would be awesome seeing as now apple is way behind in terms of Adobe!! Come on apple get you head in the game.

+1

FCS is the primary reason I'm sticking with the Mac platform since everything else I use is also available on Windows (or has a close equivalent). Except of course OS X itself which I would be sad to give up, but would adjust. So it's the Mac Pro + FCS which is the killer combo for me, and improvements in both would be very welcome.

At what point will the new MacPro release start to compete with the upcoming iMac refresh?
We are now getting into July and everybody is expecting an iMac refresh between "Back to School" and before "Christmas Season". If you look at the improvements between the old and the current iMacs, Apple put in some effort to make the new ones much better than the old ones.
It is known that the upcoming iMacs will have an ATI HD 5XXX series GPU. They will probably get the newer 32nm CPUs.
It will probably be a close call between the lower-spec'd 2010 MacPro and the top-of-the-line new 2010 iMacs.

Let's start the speculations, comparing unreleased products to each other :D.

When I heard the new touchscreen imac special event rumor this morning I did feel a little left out yet again. :(

It should be a close call between such models, because that is where the hardware levels are at. The most you would likely see from Apple for the iMac from the stuff that I've seen rumoured and projected would be 3.0Ghz 32nm quad core and a mobile Radeon 5870, and I think that is unlikely, at least this year. We don't really know how Sandy Bridge will launch though and maybe Apple will adopt it early at the end of the year. Before that there isn't really anything significant to upgrade the iMacs to.

This is what I'm hoping for. Rewrite of FCP and a new Mac Pro to run it on. You certainly never ever want to use FCP on an iMac unless it's for the simplest of things. In our production house, there's one Editor who had to work on a 27" iMac temporarily and it's painful to look at. A mess of external drives and neverending pauses, spinning wheels and horrendous launch times.

Which makes even the current Mac Pro's well worth the money if you actually need to get stuff done.

I was thinking about this today. Don't get your hopes up for a june update. With all the Iphone mania going on Apple's logistics and shipping are probably all tied up. They also announced the new mac mini. I peg middle of july for the update after the logistics department has had time to ship out all of these iphones and mac minis.

My favourite reseller had intended building up some 'new' Mac Pros as demos and were expecting something in June. They've scrapped their plans and are working on the principle of there being nothing new before September. They have no facts to back this up, merely gut feelings (they are one of the UK's biggest resellers).

Seeing as ive just this afternoon pulled the trigger on a refurb 2.93, the update will finally happen, next week. That's the way things go for me.. :D

so?

that quad core imac 'competes' with the mp and it happened too

When Apple announced the new quad-core iMacs using desktop processors last fall, I was certain new MPs would soon follow ... since absolutely definitely Apple wouldn't let the high-end consumer iMac out-power the low-end Mac Pro for more than a short while.

So much for that logic.

(I'm referring only to processor speed, no need to point out the other differences).

At this point I worry that the MP is an orphan in the Apple product lineup. There's not much that makes it uniquely "Apple-ey" to justify a big premium, beyond its ability to run the Mac OS (or iOS Pro or whatever they rename it). Sure, they could redesign the box – but how many of us really care about what it looks like? (not me).

How upset will you be if the imac gets another update before the Mac Pro. I doubt it, but the way this has gone, anything is possible. I do think that whenever this update comes, it is altogether possible that it will be close to one of the last if not the last update before they move on. The writing is on the wall.

Oh and as I said before, an new box would be nice, but I'd almost take a bag of parts at this point. Seriously.

There was no upgrade for the 2.66GHz quad Mac Pro until march when the W3530 came out.

Damn another Tuesday is around the corner. I just found out this morning that my life revolves around Tuesdays!!

And it's Tuesday again.

Since today is Tuesday... we can all go about our business, nuthin' ta see here.

Seriously, in their relentless pursuit of the "Consuming" mainstream computer user, the MP has become very much the very bottom of Apple's (read Steve Jobs') priority list, along with the now minority pro users that would be buying them. I haven't seen much in the way of pro gear in an apple store or Apple's Online Store in years. No wide format printers. No Press quality scanners. There's a few lonely wacom tablets, because they're "cool". But lately the places have been iPod, iPhone and iPad Central.

And yes, the new high end 21.5" an 27" iMacs have absolutely eaten market from the lower end MPs due to their bang-for-the-buck value. For the cost of the bottom Mac Pro with 24" Apple display, you can have a quad-core iMac, with enough money left over to buy a MacBook AND an iPad... or Adobe Creative Suite. For many Pro users in the Design and Publishing communities, it's a compelling argument in these cash tapped times. There's been mumbles in the mediasphere that Apple has lost interest in mainstream computing. Maybe so, maybe not, but I do feel that pro users, particularly designers have been left out in the cold. (Would certainly explain the quite frankly utter awfulness of Font Book... ) But we've been outsided since the success of the iMac and iPods with 'consumer' users.

Not to mention at the moment, Apple is vastly preoccupied with their adventures in the mobile sector. Their quite busy with the iPhone 4 Antenna fiasco, the PR disaster of the Consumer Reports review and deleting threads from the Apple support forums. Yes, that was a snark

Grousing? ... Maybe. But you get cynical when you realize that the $600 CS5 upgrade will cost you $3000. That's right, Core 2 Intel processor or better required.

Since when does Best buy sell; mac pros?

I have a Best Buy near me and all they have is imacs and mostly pc's.. no mac pros at all.

could be sooner than this. BestBuy recently ran out of stock for both Mac pro models, hope this is a good sign for new mac pro release.
