So. Apple might be losing a customer after this.

Guess this will be a sober reminder to always get the extended warranty with any new iPhone, especially since I don't plan on upgrading every year.
That depends. AppleCare+ is $99-129 per device. Unless you're really unlucky, you might be better off saving that money to either pay for out of warranty replacements or buy a new device outright. Granted, if insurance gives you peace of mind, then by all means get it.

As mentioned, some credit cards offer extended warranty. If you get AC+ and pay with a credit card that offers extended warranty, you can get 3 years coverage.

It's really more for the convenience than anything else. In my case of the spoilt motherboard, AppleCare+ would have allowed Apple to mail me a replacement iPhone within days for free while they looked at my phone, saving me the trouble of having to go down to an authorised retailer (which took about 10 days to issue a replacement). There is no Apple store in my country (yet).

In the US, it's $29 for the express replacement service which gets you a device within 2-3 business days even if you don't have AppleCare+. Of course, it's another $150-330 (depending on device) for out-of-warranty replacements. Granted, the US is also land of low savings so it's quite possible a lot of folks wouldn't have the spare $330 (+tax) to pay for the replacement.

I live in Singapore.

When my iPhone 6S+ failed in July, I called their helpline for advice. At first, they offered to mail me an express replacement (but I had to pay a deposit of the full price of the iPhone, which would be refunded to me once they received my broken iPhone). Then it was realised that I was not signed up with Applecare+, and the offer was thus rescinded. That said, the person who made the offer was not the person who subsequently withdrew it, so I am not really sure who is right or wrong here.

As I had an important work event that day, I couldn't afford the time to go down to an authorised repairshop to have my phone looked at, so the only option was to dig out my older 5s and update it.

The next day, I went down to have my phone examined. They kept it, and told me that it would take about 7-10 days for a replacement to be shipped to me. So I used my 5s for that duration. On the plus side, Apple did end up sending a brand new replacement iPhone to me (or if it was a refurbished model, it certainly seemed like new). The funny thing is that while Spotlight search suddenly worked fine for me, my text expansion snippets refused to sync).

Ah well. All's well that ends well, so I am not complaining.

Yup, I noticed. Just thought I'd mention folks in the US have that option even without AC+. Over here, they put a hold on your card for full replacement cost (so you definitely want to use a credit card instead of a debit card) but they don't actually charge you unless you fail to send in your old phone.

All Apple certified refurbs get a new chassis and battery so they certainly look new. That plus the 1-year warranty is why I'm more than okay buying refurbs from Apple.

Yep, sucks when the repair costs as much or more than the device is even worth now.
But you lost me at saying you were going to go with Samsung whose reliability and service is MUCH worse.

I used to be a SquareTrade or AppleCare guy, but doing the math it stopped making sense for me a while ago. Maybe if you break your phone a lot and not just the screen.. But you are paying $129 for AppleCare+ then $79 for each occurrence (and prices went up again for 6s and now limited to 2 occurences). To have the screen replaced without AppleCare+ is $109. Also most good credit cards extend warranties a year or two if you buy the phone outright.
Square trade not good at all I had an iPod touch 6 sent them to ttme three times for fix couldn't fix it after third time they refund me my money via a check

I have an iPhone 6. After spending some time in my back pocket (they don't bend, right?) a small flare developed on the screen. Noticeable, but not unusable. I have AppleCare. The first time I took it to Apple Store, they said there would be a replacement fee, because I had damaged the phone. I declined. A couple of months later, I took it in again, and they replaced it for free. Be courteous, even if they turn you down. Then go back and try again.

Apple lottery.
