Mine died Saturday, month 13. Not acceptable in a 3000.00 pro machine. Insult to injury, the info isn't getting out to authorized repair centers, as the attempt to charge me 1200.00 proved. Why do I have to educate my retail store? Calling Apple everyday till I talk to someone who knows their stuff and can promise me(which they can't)that they won't put in a doomed to fail 8600 back in... 2 year warranty? BFD! I wouldn't have paid so much for a business laptop or even gone through the trouble of switching operating systems had I had an inkling of how Apple would be. 8day wait for a part that someone at Apple knows and should anticipate will be failing in huge numbers... Thank you sir, can I have another? NVidia ****ed Apple, Apple is passing on that ****ing to you. Smile, but stand up for yourself. Extended warranty not good enough. Multiple generations of MBP's are Lemons.
Go **** yourself Apple

The retailer was "ClickOnMac" on Eastern Avenue, someone who I'd previously trusted implicitly, and sent many a referral to... Two days wasted leaving it with them didn't help my experience. Now I will be pulling serious business accounts with them. They can thank Apple and their own lack of due diligence for the loss of future business.

I've never used them. I shopped Creative Technology while they had a downtown office. A friend of mine bought a LG DVD drive from ClickOnMac under the assurances that it would work in a Graphite G4, which it didn't. A little googling proved their error. They did take refund the purchase, but they seem a little weak in the info chain. If my MBP 4,1 goes dark, I'll just take it into the EC or Sheridan Apple Stores.

Wow!

When I purchased my MBP in mid May of '07 I was almost immediately bummed when the updated versions rolled out in June with the new graphics cards...well, I'm not upset anymore!

I'm happy as a clam now with my ATI x1600 gpu!

As a video editor that uses my computer to make a living I truly feel for everyone that's been screwed over by this situation.

Took mine in today. I'll echo what another poster said: Apple doesn't seem to want to take care of this.

I had a computer that was booting up, but the display was dark, the exact correct symptoms for this problem. Anyway, the guy plugged in the hard drive and ran the diagnostic... and said that it wasn't covered because it couldn't perform the test because it didn't have the right graphics chip (I'm guessing the chip had bit the dust).

Anyway, come prepared. I had the article printed out, and had him look up what graphics card I had and what date my system was manufactured, which, of course, all matched the article. It's being repaired for free. I think that he knew that it should be repaired regardless of what their test said. Either someone at Apple didn't figure in the fact that the chips burn out when they made their test, or they're trying to not fix it.

Anyway, should have mine back in 3-5 days.

I took mine to a "Genius" after yanking it from my "Authorized Repair".
I told her exactly what the problem was and what she(Apple) was going to do about it. She wasted no movement in pulling out her hardware and making the diagnosis in under 3 minutes! She however, was educated only so far and would make no guarantee as to the quality of the logic board replacement. Actually talking to them on the phone and trying to get to the crux of the situation, for me has been a cross between bargaining for information and a philosophical debate.
Lost productivity and an unreliable business machine because no guarantees are given as to quality. Yet all of us paid a premium for quality and service. Unfortunately, the one and only specific article that Apple has issued on this subject is far from front page news and the consumer is left on his own, solo. Those MBP owners are such a small demographic compared to the potential customer base they'd lose with full disclosure. All I read now is about mbp owners who have anxiety about their machines and have stopped doing stuff, buying PC's to do things they used to do without a second though. But at least they know they've got two years, with a small break, maybe in the middle somewhere, or two...

That, Ladies and Gentalmen, sucks...

Oh great.

Somehow the Apple technicians at my local store managed to break the sleep indicator LED on the front of my MacBook Pro. Since it's Easter weekend and the machine's been pushed to the back of the queue it's gonna be another four or five days until it's ready... I'm getting seriously annoyed now.

You mean ATI X1600?

That's about the same age as my MBP. I take it yours is of the Penryn generation?

I wish Apple had used a ATI GPU on the unibody MacBook/Pro/Air. I do not understand why they went with NVIDIA after the trouble with the last gen. I have never had a ATI GPU fail (The GPU on my iBook works it is a voltage regulator that supplies power that failed) I have had 1 NVIDIA fail shortly after one year on a gaming PC. Only time will tell if the unibodies will fail too. I like the C2D ATI MBP's. I am a little scared to buy a unibody because the GPU is less than 1.5 years old. I wish I got a 2.33 GHz when they still sold them.

If the GPU has issues it will come up within 1.5 years in my experience.

I agree with the guy who said this thread just reminds him of his ticking timebomb because I'm in the same boat.

I'm running absolutely top factory spec 8600M GT 512MB, 2.6GHz, 4GB factory (b/c Apple screwed up!), matte and I am willing to trade for an older generation MBP with ATI graphics.

Am I serious? I don't know.

Sold my MBP 2.2 SR after one failure. Using older ATI GPU-based MBP until something better (preferably ATI GPU-based) comes along.

Cheers,

Mine would be the last of the 2.4/2.2Ghz. Purchased in early '08.
It was returned to me today after being uped to repair level 2. Probably on account of me calling everyday asking why mbps weren't sold in pairs for redundancy, and "How's the Radeon M86xt in the Dells?" Anyway a brand new Rev 2 logic board with a nVidia 8600m GT 256mb, prayer beads not included.
For those keeping track:

Chipset Model: GeForce 8600M GT
Type: Display
Bus: PCIe
PCIe Lane Width: x16
VRAM (Total): 256 MB
Vendor: (name changed to protect the stupid) (0x10de)
Device ID: 0x0407
Revision ID: 0x00a1
ROM Revision: 3175

On another note, does anybody know how to PROPERLY reassemble a mbp so there is not a big bump over the optical drive? More like a wave really...

Is this a 15" Alu MBP? Hmmm... Sounds like he didn't really break it, could be that he forgotten to attach the cable to the flat cable on top of the drive.

It's assembled correctly, you just have to apply some pressure to the top of the case preferably about an inch from the edge, left, middle and right of the slot. There's three little clips above the CD slot.. just give it a gentle yet firm push er... downwards!

Anybody can help?

I have Nvidia 8600M GT

My Mac purchased in August 2007. It crashed last week.

After testing it shows this error: 4vdc/1/40000003: VideoController

Will it be the Video Card issue?

Unfortunately the case is a little warped... Knowing where the clips are helps to know where to massage it though, thanks.

That's what I've got...

I'm looking at a 2.33 mbp off of craigslist with the 256 mb ati card. Guy's wanting $1200 for it. Does anyone think this is a good deal, since it comes with the higher specced ati card? 2 gigs of ram, 120 gig hard drive.

Mine is a 17" glossy. I've got 3 gigs of ram and am about to swap out my current 160GB HD for a 500GB. Great machine for me so far. I'm a video editor so it gets a workout with FCS2 and CS3. The ATI X1600 has served me very well so far. :D

So if your MBP was just recently returned, with a "new" logic board installed with GT8600 ROM version 3175, how come my 2.4 MBP 4.1 (early-08) bought back in Nov 08, built last week of September 08 has ROM version 3212?

Why didn't Apple install a Logic board with the later ROM revision ? or am I missing something

My early 2008 MBP (April) also has ROM version 3212.

Haven't seen any problems yet.

What's the ROM version got to do with it? Has a correlation been noticed between certain ROM versions and GPU failures?
