Rom revision

So if your MBP was just recently returned, and a "new" logic board installed with ROM version 3175, how come my 2.4 MBP 4.1 (early-08) bought back in Nov 08 has ROM version 3212?

Why didn't Apple install a Logic board with the later ROM revision ? or am I missing something

I believe the difference is in the processors. Mbp3.1 merom(3175) and mbp4.1 penryn(3212).

Mine is a 17" glossy. I've got 3 gigs of ram and am about to swap out my current 160GB HD for a 500GB. Great machine for me so far. I'm a video editor so it gets a workout with FCS2 and CS3. The ATI X1600 has served me very well so far. :D

So, I guess that's a yes? Here's a link to the ad, for your review:

I'll be taking a copy of the tech tool deluxe from a previous applecare with me, anything else you can suggest? Oh, and I'll fire up cs4 to make sure the serial is valid. Does cs4 have copy protection? Can someone install it on more than one machine? (I don't want to copy it, I just want to make sure the copy on this one will still be valid if he reinstalls it on another system.

I can't answer about the software questions...but if the machine is in decent shape that seems like a pretty good price for what you're getting.

I think my MBP might be screwed! My screen has been showing vertical black stripes. Does anyone know if Apple will fix this? I went there once and they just resetted my screen and said that this shouldn't happen anymore... but it has happpened lots of times! Help!

I would take pics, and reference the last time you went in. Say that their fix didn't work and have them test for the Nvidia problem. Sounds like your card is going bad if you ask me. Good luck!

Just to close the loop, I just got mine back (quick service, dropped off last Wednesday and got it today via FedEx) and my hard drive is still in here. So far, it's working well.

Mid-2007 MBP3,1 SR 2.4

Hi all,

I just went through this same exact thing. Had the mbp for 20 months (with applecare) and one day the screen went dark. external screen didn't work either. booted fine...no display.

brought it to 5th avenue apple store and they took 7 business days to get it back to me in perfect working order. they replaced the logic board. $0.00

No hassles. the frustrating part, besides the fact that the comp decided to take a dump and then i didn't have it for almost 10 days, was that my itunes needed to be reauthorized with my account and then my ipods and apple tv needed to be resynced. time machine needed to start over, but that was ok bc i had the backups already if anything went wrong with the long initial backup. everything went well with TM so i deleted the backups from the original logic board.

after some time of getting everything back to normal, everything is back to normal.

Hopefully this doesn't happen again, but it should all be covered under your applecare...that's why it's there, that's why u buy it. the applecare for the mbp is what, $350?? logic board....$1600!! u do the math. 1 repair and the applecare pays for itself and then some!!!!

good luck to all!

Thanks for the clarification

Q-6

The is no connection IIRC. ROM assignment is mostly random. However there is kind of a pattern. Systems with 128MB/256MB cards boards tend to have the 3175 ROM whilst 512MB boards have the 3212 but still any system can get any ROM

Another perceived pattern was that 3175 boards have a more failures documented compared to 3212 boards. However 3212 boards can also fail (my machine is proof of this)

another little trick i use is taking out the battery, and just running on straight power. That helps it stay a lot cooler.

I used to do this, and it would definitely keep the unit cooler. However, the latter half of my ownership it caused the performance of my machine to drop, especially playing games (about half frame rate). Someone linked me to a apple tech document where it explained that the the removal of the battery will throttle back the CPU.

That was what happened to mine earlier this month. was told 9 days, but they had the logic board in stock... so next day it was done... although now I am noticing that my palmrest isn't sitting right (clicks as it moves a wee bit) and my case has a bulge (on the right side of the dvd drive slot)
I'm gonna talk to apple asap about that, the repair was on the 6th so hopefully they don't blame me...
ALL my major apps (autocad, revit, maya) need relicensing etc. which is a big pain in the but...

My Story

I'm very glad I found this thread.

I have a 2.4Ghz 8600GT 256MB SR 17" MBP and it has been in the shop a couple times already. One time the machine wouldn't boot up, the light would simply come on and that was it - nothing on the screen. They replaced the logic board. Recently the battery wasn't holding a charge, so I figured I just need to replace the battery. While I was waiting for my battery to come in, the original battery starting swelling up, and looked like it was going to explode. When the computer gets hot from use, it wouldn't boot without the battery in it, so I' had to put in this swollen battery to get it going, then take it out again. Sounds like the logic board ... again.

I use my laptop as the central workhouse for my business and I cannot tolerate it going down, even if it is under applecare. The last time it went down it was weeks before a critical presentation which set me back a week. I also use my laptop for occasional gaming, sometimes for hours at a time. Not good if you have an 8600GT.

After spending hours going through this thread, I've noticed artifacts on my 17" described by other posters. Time to forget about the SR MBP and move on. If I wasn't gaming, then fine, but I am, and I'm not going to change because of their flawed product.

I'm glad I found this thread because I wanted to get my 17" fixed, then replace it with another laptop since my 17" seems to be a lemon. I was thinking about getting a 15" SR MBP (17"s are heavy i find), but not after I read this thread on the 8600GT. I ended up getting a uMBP, but there are a lot of things that bug me about it (glossy screen, FW800 only etc). However, c'est la vie.

Apple is a reactive company that will fix the problem if you bring it to them. I doubt they will issue a recall or proactively fix laptops in hopes that other's machines do not suffer any problems, or that the warranty expires.

I started to have some scrolling issues when using Safari on my classic mbp. Text becomes unreadable, chopped etc. I tried to take some screenshots with Grab, but on a screenshot everything looks normal. Problem is VERY difficult to replicate, although one day I had it continue for 10 or more minutes, but rebooting fixed the issue and it doesn't come back. I use my mbp as secondary computer, so not everyday and not often. Is there any way to make this issue worse? Will some programs which use processor/ video card intensively make a difference? Mostly I use mbp for internet browsing.

Is anyone having trouble with the older MBP's with the ati cards?

My 2.33 GHz MBP with ATI X1600 has (knock on wood) been the most rock solid computer I've ever owned. And I'm a video editor and run FCS 2 on it.

I'm SO glad I bought it in May of '07 right before the switch to the Nvidia cards! :D

I have the "dreaded" ROM version 3175 with my 2.2 SR, and I haven't had ANY issues regarding graphics.

I have played hours on end of Left 4 Dead on Boot camp'd Windows 7, and this thing doesn't let up.

Absolutely solid for 14 months... *knocks on wood* =)

same machine

I've not had any problems yet either. I never ended up buying apple care and I bought the computer from Best Buy. Probably getting the idea of an idiot about now.

Knowing what could happen with the logic board. I've been more than worried but at the same time using it a large portion of every day making music. I gotta do the knock on wood.

Hopefully I'm one of the lucky fellows. My machine is identical to who I quoted, even in date. Other than the worry of something might happen..its made me happy so far

I had the same problem as well.

This is very likely not a gpu failure, but a known issue with MBP that is software based. 10.5.5 solved it for a lot of people. When my brother in law had it on his MBP, the Mac genuis told him to reinstall OSX to solve the problem as it's related to a driver and apparently a file can be corrupted. He did and he's had no problems since.

just wondering, a question to the folks that had their nvidia card replaced:

does apple give you a new computer (like a refurb) or do they literally replace the card? since it's soldered on the logic board, i figure they might just give you a new one like what they do with ipods and iphones? since my bottom case is dent :D.. and i'm too lazy to replace it with an ebay replacement

The replace the mlb on your existing computer.

I would've gone back to my old ATi MacBook Pro, but its screen is really faded, it gets ridiculously hot (far hotter than my Santa Rosa) and has all sorts of problems like mega warping, display bezel rubbing with body, high-pitched CPU whine, flickering backlight and shocking general build quality.

That ATi one had a logic board problem where all the colours on the built-in display went crazy (all wrong colours, but not inverted). So now both of my MacBook Pros have had to go in for logic board replacements...
