Guess I'm one of the luckier ones (fingers crossed). Pre-Penryn 2.4Ghz from 2007, still running strong on its original logic board. I did clean out the stock thermal paste and heat sink and reapplied with AS5.

hey guys.

i got an early Penryn 2008 MBP 2.5/512MB 8600M GT bought day one and it just seemed to die on me after going to sleep. When I lift the lid open nothing happened. I did a hard shutdown, and tried to reboot but I'm not getting any video (its just black) and no hard disk activity - only the fans turn on. And its stuck from there. No chime. Battery is fully charged, tried with and without it in. Can't even do a PRRAM reset. I've followed this thread for some time and it seems some people have been getting symptoms prior to the 8600 going kaput. I got none. Anyone think this still might be an 8600 issue here? I have no other explanation for why my computer suddenly decided to die. I'm all ears for any ideas you guys might have. :( Thanks.

I have the same issue. After going to sleep, it no longer wake up. No video (black lcd), no chime, no hdd activities, no external video, just fan's sound turned on and the dvd drive spins, i still have my leopard dvd inside and can't eject it. The sleep led bright when I close the lid and dim when I lift it up. Wierd.

Tried a PRAM reset, SMC reset, removed the battery and put it back, all everything that I can to test, all failed.

This morning I took my MBP to an AASP in Vietnam (that's where I'm from) and the guy there said to me after a hardware test: It's the mainboard failure, not the GPU and I'm not coveraged with Apple policy about the 8600GT. To replace the new one, I must pay $610 to ship it to Singapore to be replaced and ship it back.

That's sucks! Should I simply pay $610 to replace it or bring it to another AASP to recheck? What if they said the same? LOL Buying a new MBP? My trust in Apple have shaken after this.

Mine is an Early 2008 MBP with Penryn T8300 2.4Ghz, 2GB RAM, 256MB 8600GT M.

I had the same situation; I advice a new MBP because you won't get warranty for more than three months only for the new mainboard.

Same here!

My 2007 SR 2.2GHz MBP died last week. Wouldn't turn on. Hard drive spun, no video. Didn't boot as the standby light stayed constant. Went into an Apple reseller (we have very few Apple stores here in Melbourne) and they said it might be a logic board or graphics card issue. They said if its graphics card, it'll be free to replace. A logic board would be very costly. Very disappointed if it turns out I have to pay $1000+ for something on a 2 year old MBP.

Yep, they told me I'll have only 90 days warranty for the new mainboard if I agree to replace it. Will it continue to die like my current one in the future and pay another 610 bucks for another one?

Apple sucks bad for me. A product that cost almost 2000 bucks and is a PRO version that last only 1 and a half year. I've used 3 laptops so far which I grabbed 2 years b4 my MBP, 2 from Lenovo and 1 from HP, none have any probs and I'm still using it until now. It's all Apple fault because NV gave them **** and they're giving it back to the end-user.

If I have to buy a new laptop, Apple will not on my shopping list.

First replacement.

Just thought I'd chime in and add my own story to the thread, maybe it might be of interest to someone.

I have a Macbook Pro 2.2 with the effected NVIDIA card, which will be 3 years old in October. I downloaded Portal when Steam went live two weeks ago. On the second day, while playing for about half an hour, the screen melted. On reboot, I got all the expected graphics problems, things out of place, distortion, jaggy graphics, and so on.

I phoned Apple, who told me about the known issue without me prompting, and from there I brought it to a reseller in dublin for them to take a look.

The guy in there gave me a bit of grief over having replaced the keyboard with non Apple keyboard (spillage), and that there was a couple of screws missing from the casing (lost them putting the thing back together.

I had also replaced the hard drive myself, as well as a Sata connector that I ripped in the process. (I'm not as clumsy as I sound, really).

Just got it back today, they swapped the logic board for a new one, seems to be working fine now, by background had changed to default Leopard print for some reason, everything else seems normal.

No charge.

I'm thinking of selling it on eBay now, though, and putting the cash towards a new MBP. It's like if your dog bites someone. You don't think it will happen again, but you can't be sure. I think it'll play on my mind.

Also I feel afraid to play any games now, not that I played many or much.

I've been using my netbook non stop for the last two weeks and now I keep going for CTRL rather than CMD on my Mac. Creatures of habit, aren't we?

Paul

I was having the symptoms from the GPU, and got it repaired a few weeks ago. A few days ago, I had to the same problems appearing again. After calling AppleCare, I told them what happened, and luckily, within a few minutes I was talking to someone who told me that based on my history, they are just going to send me a new MacBook Pro (2.4Ghz i5). So I'm a happy camper.

I'm not surprised they decided to replace it. Though only the Logic Board was replaced once, they were not going to replace it a second time. Addtionally, I have had the inverter board replaced twice, the top case replaced twice, and the whole display assembly replaced once...

I was curious if anyone knows what how long "priority shipping" takes. That is how they are sending it to me.

don't stop playing games,
i say keep playing them and if the Mac goes to sleep and dosent wake up ever, your chances are greatly increased to get ya self a new replacement Mac, as the last poster noted, only 1 logic board replacement, 2nd failure = new Mac.
Ive already had 1 replacement and a few days ago whilst using iTunes I was seeing some colours wigging out, all artifacty and could see it starting to fail again...
But I'm keen to play some games again on it with Steam sorta hoping it will die because I don't wont it to happen when better games get ported to the Mac and my extra warranty no longer is valid, i got till Oct (3 years then).

Game on buddy,

You won't find better laptop than Apple's MBP, especially the new models. The old model has major issue; because most of people who’s used it had their logic board died in less than 2 years. I remember when I sent my MBP for repair and the service personnel told me that there were two other people complaining from the same issue; this can be major issue because I am staying in United Arab Emirates and Macs are not popular ;(Poor of its support to Arabic); which proves there are defective logic board in old model. It maybe related to Graphic Card issue or other problems apple haven’t announced them. But I believe the new MBP are way better than the old one. But I won't get new one unless I see usb 3 support.

Exactly the same way I felt when they fixed mine and I sold it off on eBay. Got a respectable amount for it and plus that & discounts managed to get the base i5 for <$1k :)

I don't have much info other than also getting my first logic board replaced last year, everything has been pretty good except for recently started getting some new artifacts.
I personally have NOT talked to them (apple) since but from some peoples experience/testimonies including applefieddarwin,

though just realised he had quiet a BAD history with his Mac...
thats all i know

anyone else with a late 2008 penryn 17" have any problems? my applecare is running out in a few days, i've been playing some games on bootcamp but haven't had any problems yet....

You know I havnt heard any explicit reports of the 17 inch penryn (the one that was NOT updated to unibody in late 2008) failing. The thermal envelop of those machines are actually different from the 15 inchers because of the larger size .

Doesn't matter. My early '08 17" failed and my sister's dell 17" had its GPU failed twice as well.

I'm hoping to get a replacement as soon as something goes wrong again (which is bound to be soon and I have a year left on Applecare). Just got my early 2008 MBP back from the shop, complete with another "new" logic board (2nd one), speaker assembly, audio board, and display. Previous repairs include: logic board, top case, keyboard, and superdrive. I'm so sick of this laptop, if it isn't a lemon I don't know what is! :( Anyone have tips on asking for a replacement?

You should've called AppleCare while the MBP was in the shops. I doubt they'll give you a replacement now. Next time just call Applecare and demand to know why the laptop keep failing after Apple assured it wouldn't, and ask for a replacement instead of another logic board with the same chip.

Yeah, I called and spoke to a supervisor back in January and asked for a replacement then (which of course I was denied). But that was before I had the 2nd logic board failure. I just noticed another interesting problem in the last week, when I pull my power cord sometimes the backlight completely goes out and doesn't come back without sleeping the computer. I may be giving them a call soon...

Here's an update on my situation,

Took it in to apple retail this morning and was told the logic board is faulty and not the GPU - so its not covered under the 8600M GT extended warranty.

what a load of bullcrap!

There is no reason for a logic board failure, I'm convinced one of the ways the 8600M GT failure manifests itself exactly like this. A logic board failure is most certainly linked to the GPU failure. Anyone else have a similar story?

I'm going to have to take this up with customer relations on Monday. They've pulled through in the past with my dad's powerbook g4 (logic board)...i'm hoping they'll extend me the same courtesy. This is a known problem and they want to get off the hook. Don't let them!

It is totally possible to get a logic board failure without the GPU itself being the cause. There are many other chips on the board itself that can fail. Their nvidia test almost always show GPU error code.

Does your CD spin when you try to boot from it? See if you can insert a OS CD in there, and press C or option and see if its spin. If it does, then it's working, and the GPU is dead. If its not than you got a general logic board failure.

You can call AppleCare all you want but if you didn't buy AppleCare plan, then you're screwed.

An update on my situation: My father was looking to buy a new iMac so I decided to go with him and at least talk to someone regarding the new quirky issue my MBP has plus its long repair history. After an hour of the genius trying to recreate my problem, which he was unable to do, I was offered a replacement. They agreed that 8 replaced parts in 2 years wasn't normal and I'll be coming home with a new 15in antiglare tomorrow. :) So for those trying, there is hope! Apple is now off my hate list. ;)

I have a question for people that have similar experiences like me. I'm at my third logic board (My last logic board replacement in April 15) and one LCD replacement. For the last two days I have this bad bearing noise from my left fan, and today I took it to the genius and he said they will replace the fan for free and he ordered the part and he will call me when it comes in. My question is should I demand a new MBP, since I'm sick of dealing with this one, or should I wait for the GPU to fail again. Thanks for the answers.

update:

spoke with apple tech support on monday and got nowhere even though I escalated the call to level 2. they said it was a logic board failure and not a GPU failure and my machine was out of warranty for over a year now.

left it at that.

today (wednesday) spoke with customer relations and after a very short story was also escalated to level 2. there a senior advisor told me based on the history of my machine (2 previous repairs) and my frustrations they would be willing to make an exception and repair it at their expense.

I'm a happy camper again. I still love macs.

Should get the MBP back in about a week.

Unfortunately my Early 2008 MBP 15" died the other week :-(
I had the following symptoms: Black screen on startup, but there was a startup chime, sleep light was on constant white, and I was able to target disk mode using another mac so could still access files. Just nothing at all on screen. After removing battery, PRAM/SMC reset etc etc, I came to the conclusion that it was the 8600M GT failure..
Took it into the Apple reseller yesterday, they said it was probably the GPU issue, though they couldn't confirm.
I cannot believe Apple hasn't done a full recall to all affected MBP's. My friends identical model (actually I think it was the 2007 MBP), had exactly the same issue only a month or so before mine.. They replaced for free, but I don't get why you have to wait for your mac to fail BEFORE they will replace for free.....
