Well there are several variations of the mbp logic board depending on cpu speed/cache and gpu memory. Often "legacy" products such as ours, or ones with newer iterations, will have to be stockpiled and called up to your local store.

This is a mail in repair, so it's actually the main repair center in Texas that is out of stock :( That's why I am wondering how long it could potentially add to the repair time frame.

So why is that query in this thread? There are no faulty 9600s. (at least that we know of)

He probably didn't know that, or misread the thread title

OT: I'm beginning to think my mobo is failing again. I've been seeing more and more artifacts now that its been fairly hot again, even with smcfancontrol @ 3500 idling I'm still getting issues like before. It must of been around January/February that I took it in to be fixed, hopefully if something happens it happens soon, because my AppleCare ends in December.

Do an Apple hardware test to see if you get a VideoController error.

Otherwise check your info in System Profiler, then under Graphics/Displays check PCIe Lane Width. Anything less than x16 indicates trouble.

Apple just extended the GPU warranty to 4 years so you may yet hv abt 18 months of GPU support.

Cheers,

I worked patiently with Apple through 2 repairs and they are now replacing my 17" MBP. I got the base model in the exchange and could pay for any upgrades, but I just went with the base model.

Are they replaceing it with a 2010 refresh MBP? That would be incredible.

My MBP 15 with the 8600M has already been repaired once, and now it's dying again. Closest Fruit Stand is an hour drive away, so it's time to hit that up again. I wish I could reproduce it reliably though.

Yes the base model 17" i5. I could have paid the $200 to upgrade to the i7 but didn't feel it necessary based on what I did. I persevered but Apple wasn't not unreasonable trying to repair and then replace. It was a good process.

Update - The second repair was a disaster. Got my computer back in terrible condition. The bottom was full of scratches, they installed somebody else's battery (had 300+ more cycles than my original) and the 'K' key on the keyboard was bent out of place.

They decided to replace the screen as well as the logic board. The new screen was horrible, much more backlight bleed and a visible yellow tint at the bottom. When I opened the box and saw its condition, I figured they had sent me somebody else's computer. I was so angry to find it was mine after booting it up.

Anyway, Apple are replacing my laptop with a new 2.4 i5 15" which will hopefully be here on Friday. I really loved my original macbook pro and I'm bummed it was treated so poorly.

Overall I'm pleased and give Apple credit for stepping up in the end.

(MBP SR 2.4GHz)

Does it really take 4 major failing parts to become eligible for a replacement? I have had 3 repairs so far, logic board, fan and battery.

Now after running apple hardware tests i got an error code 4SNS/1/40000000: TGOD, I have identified that it is related to the GPU temp sensor so that must be another major failing part.

There is more, the DVD-RW won't burn discs and strange black "spots" were found on the edge of screen (theyre not dead pixels because the edges are blurry), also the battery is on 200 cycles but I have only 38% of original capacity left when fully charged

To sum up, part failures are as follow:
Repair level 2 (Major failure?)
-1st Logic board (replaced)
-Fan (replaced)

Other failing parts:
-1st battery (replaced)
-2nd battery (current)
-2nd Logic board (current)
-DVD-RW (current)
-Screen (current)

I am worried because AppleCare is running out in august and my mbp only have 3 major failures, which is 1 short for a replacement. Would the number of minor failures be enough for me to ask for a replacement?

thanks in advance.

So I went in recently and tried hard to convince them but unfortunately i was served with a very knowledgeable PR genius. I didn't manage to get a replacement :(

However, they have agreed to repair it yet again and replaced many parts,
logic board
DVD-RW
Display
Battery
smaller, 85W adapter

…All covered by AppleCare

With all the new parts, I hope the mbp is able to stay alive for another 2 years at least.

...well, when it fails again just think of how much better the replacement future "current" model will be:)

How many times have you gone in to get your issues fixed? I know it doesn't help now, but you'll get much better results the more you go in with your machine, because you get to rack up incidents. if you bring in your machine once in 2.5 years and they replace the logic board, top case, screen, battery, hard drive, cd-rom drive, I/O board et al, they will log it all in one case and send you on your merry way. If you bring it in as issues accumulate, on your 5th or 6th repair (with three of those being major repairs), then you'll be able to say "look, i've been without my machine for nearly two weeks because of these various issues. I no longer trust the machine".

That was my 4th time going in for repair, 3rd time at an apple store

#1
Dead logic board

#2
Battery gone bad and can only hold 600mah (new battery)

#3
Dead fan

#4
the 5 items listed in above post

So I am now running on
#3 logic board
#3 battery
#2 fan
#2 DVD-RW
#2 Display
#2 power adapter

Things that is original:
keyboard, track pad, bottom case, hard drive

maybe thats still not enough for them to give up on repairing

...yes you've had a bunch of "different" repairs but machines usually get replaced when you have the same part fail more than 3 times (unless you get really lucky)... good luck...

FEB 2008 2.4ghz model MBP still running... approx 18hours a day run time...

I wonder if all Feb Models are effected.

Same here, Feb 2008 2.4GHz with 8600m, never skipped a beat with heavy usage in clamshell mode, encoding videos, Sims 3, watching HD video etc.

Happened to me on Friday on my mid 97 model. Hungover on Saturday so took it to a mega busy Westfield on Sunday without an appointment. Luckily because of the nature of the fault I was able to do whats called a 'quick drop' which involved filling in a very brief form and leaving it with the guy. The earliest genius appointment in London was a 4 day wait so the gamble payed off.

Now Apples support page says 'repair in progress' so I assume that means what it says which is good news.

re: the replacement board . . . .

I am no legal expert but surely Apple can't get away with replacing a defective part with a part they know is also defective. This tells me they are biding their time and trying to minimise their losses. Think about it, loads of people upgrade every three years or they loose or break their computer. If they work for a company then the company just buy them a new one. If I was a bit better off than I am at the moment I would just think ****** it and buy a new one.

The longer Apple can drag this on the better for them. This tells me that the replacement scheme will continue beyond 4 years and maybe some of us will end up with brand new unibodies.

They have 3 choices.

1. Give everyone a brand new Mac.

2. Design a new logic board for our Macs.

3. Keep replacing the logic boards with current stock until it runs dry by which time 5 or 6 years may have passed and the amount of still functioning Macs out there will have dropped dramatically, then readdress the issue.

The guy in the Apple store told me how nvidias share price had fallen dramatically because of this and indeed they were being held responsible by Apple financially.

You must be still hungover, your MBP is a mid 97 model? :D

Weeee! This is my second MacBook Pro to get this failure. Distorted graphics appearing in Star Trek Online via CrossOver Games for about three days, then the display wouldn't turn on this morning. Just like my last MacBook Pro. :(

Happened on holiday as well... At least I have my new iPad to keep me busy.

mines beginning to show a lot of distorted video/artifacts and occasionally locks up or won't boot. However for some reason now its fine...(its already been fixed once for this problem).
Does it have to be completely dead to have it repaired or is this enough?

Completely dead, it'll probably die within a month. I noticed the distorted artifacts for a month before it finally died for me.

Call Apple to either get it fixed for free (if this is the first time on this particular machine) or demand a replacement machine (if this machine has already been repaired before).

I feel for all the customers who stuck it out with those defective nvidia GPUs. I am personally pleased Apple has moved to ATI for everything but the Macbook products (and the mini). After the 8600 mess I'm amazed there are still people advocating nvidia in these very forums. I'd be fine if Apple never used another nvidia product. I sold my SR 2.2 after 18 months and 1 repair. Those folks who've stuck with those machines through many many repairs should just get a new MBP at no charge.

Cheers,
