I feel for all the customers who stuck it out with those defective nvidia GPUs. I am personally please Apple has moved to ATI for everything but the Macbook products (and the mini). After the 8600 mess I'm amazed there are still people advocating nvidia in these very forums. I'd be fine if Apple never used another nvidia product. I sold my SR 2.2 after 18 months and 1 repair. Those folks who've stuck with those machines through many many repairs should just get a new MBP at no charge.

Cheers,

yes I just got my 15" early 2008 king sized to a i7 17" last week, though my "straw" that broke the proverbial camel's back was unrelated to the GPU (though i've had it once before) .

So keep on them. Four years is a good amount of time to rack um the repairs.

Mines come back after 12 days with a new logic board fitted.

From the receipt:

PCBA, MLB 2.4 GHZ, REV2
Part number: 661-4956

Total price: £753.18 (repaired free)

The fans are now on full hammer constantly and the bluetooth is not available. I have tried all the tricks online to reinstate it but none are working.

Back to Apple I go. Next available appointment is next week. :(

As someone who has this model of MacBook Pro, I'm still waiting (knock on wood) for any problems - keep in mind that 6-7 years ago everyone was excited when Apple was moving to NVidia from ATI after the mess of iBook G3 failures...

After 2 logic board replacements in the past 2 weeks, they replaced my 15" 2.4 c2c Macbook Pro with a new laptop.

Wasn't aware of iBook issues. My first Mac was a Powerbook 15 1.25

I'm sure there are issues with all vendors. This 8600 mess and how it was handled is particularly galling since I had a Mac and 3 family and/or friends had Sony's with 8400s that failed and it took Sony 2 years to acknowledge the issue (I won't buy Sony anymore either).

After 2 logic board replacements in the past 2 weeks, they replaced my 15" 2.4 c2c Macbook Pro with a new laptop.

At this point anyone who still has a 8600-based Mac should get rid of it or pressure Apple to replace it. I don't see many lasting more than the 4 year extended warranty.

Cheers,

Third failure. I got off the phone with Apple care they are replacing it. I had 15 2.5 2gb ram 250GB and 512 vram matte. They were going to give me the 15-inch: 2.53GHz I told them mine had 512 vram then they bumped me to the i7 Then i said i needed an express card ( i dont i just wanted the larger screen) so they are giving me the i5 17 high res anitglare. I did not want to push my luck to any further. They said i might have to pay $50 for the antiglare. If they do that i will then pay to upgrade to the I7.

I just handed mine in for repair. I was assured that the new logic board would not suffer the same issue and that after the fix the Mac should be good for another few years... Well, only time will tell. I'm braced for it failing again, although hopefully within the 4 years from purchase, if it does.

They're going to put in one of these 'Revision 2' boards:

661-4957 PCBA MLB 2.6 GHZ REV2

i still have my macbook Pro 3.1 and no problem excep that the battery died. It actually does not hold charge like a year since I got it now is completely died. I have not experiece the video problem but most likely due to the fact I have really not using it for a long period of time on GPU intensive app.

Good to see at least apple is still repairing or replacing it. I am curious if I start pushing the machine and bring it to the store, would they repair or replace mine.

They told me the same thing, but my 2.2 "rev 2" failed quicker than the original. Perhaps you will have more luck with the 2.6 incarnation.

If I do have problems with the new board, this is the first place I'll be reporting it to (other than the Apple Store :p). Hopefully I will be more lucky, although if it does happen again I'll be 2/3 on my way to a new Mac. :)

Is anyone else having problems with their fans on the REV2? Mine are stuck at 6000rpm. I can now constantly hear it in the room. It's like an air conditioning unit sitting in the corner.

I never had that problem. Are you running smc fan control? if you are check the settings. If not take it in.

Open it up and blow and clean out the dust from the fan. If you have apple care let apple do it for you.

Yeah. Constantly at 6k. Cant work in peace anymore. All I ever do is surf and stuff. Nothing heavy.

I have booked another appointment at the 'genius' bar.

Dammit

Well, I thought if it made it this far it won't fail.. wrong!
Early 2008 MacBook Pro
2.5 GHz Penryn
2 GB RAM
NVidia 8600 GT 512 VRAM
I bought it at the beginning of April 2008 and it's been flawless for two and a half years. The other day I came back from work, sat down, opened the lid. All good. Checked my email, watched some YouTube videos, visited the lolcats website. I close the lid and go out for late lunch. Come back after an hour and a half, sat down, opened the lid and nothing. The screen was black and that was that.
Took it to Apple store and they tell me it's the logic board and I have to pay for it because it's highly unlikely to be the video chip. They tell me the issue is only known for the 2.2 and 2.4 GHz .. We'll see about this!
I'm sad, and this iPod makes my wrist hurt.

They are wrong
Specific products affected:

* MacBook Pro 15-inch and 17-inch models with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processors
o MacBook Pro (17-Inch, 2.4GHz)
o MacBook Pro (15-Inch, 2.4/2.2GHz)
o MacBook Pro (Early 2008)
* These computers were manufactured between approximately May 2007 and September 2008

I had a 2.5 fail 3 times.

My PCIe Lane Width says x8. Do I have to wait until my mbp is no longer working for apple to replace it or should I bring it in now?

My mbp went down to x1 before I brought it in. Use ur original disks and run the apple hardware test. You should get a "VideoController" error.

Thank you for the information. Was your computer bootable but with no video? Did it chime? Because I was told that's basically the difference between paying and not paying for the repair. Mine had only the LED come on and the usual noise from the SuperDrive.

Lies. apple replaced my logic board for the video issues and I had the same model.

Don't let them cheat you. Keep pushing, calling Apple HQ if necessary. Also, sometimes AASC will be more willing to repair than Apple.

Cheers,

Just got my second repair back

Another 8600m repair story for the record, I just got my 2nd repair job back from Applecare. First time, video card/logic board went and I had the black screen of death (system was burning hot when I took it out of the bag).
That repair was back in February.

Fastforward to April, my isight camera went out. Following that, blocky graphics glitches. I was able to keep using it until I needed the camera. I sent in the laptop (2.5ghz Penryn 15") and had it back within 2 days (impressive service).
They once again replaced the logic board, top case etc.

Can anyone explain what happens if/when the logic board goes out a 3rd time? I've heard rumors that third time's the charm but I don't have any details. Thanks and good luck to other 8600m owners out there!

there is no set time. Some people say it's the "third" time, others say it's on the fourth time, AFTER your third repair. What I encourage everyone to do is bring their machine in or send it down to texas if it verifiably is operating out of spec. People (for some reason) will let their hard drive crash, their cd drive break, their screen break and logic board die before bringing the machine in, to which Apple will just replace all the components and give it back to them w/ a smile. Instead, rack up repairs and then go back saying "look, i've already been without my machine for 5 or 6 times. I think you and I know what time it is."

And anyone who has a problem with the above should complain to Apple about faulty components :)

Twice it had no video at all heard the fans no video on external either. I turned off the annoying chime so it never chimed. The third time video controller error with restore disks.
