Ugh. There's so much wrong with that kind of thinking. (and bear in mind that I LIKE Apple Maps)

1) Apple REPLACED a functional map with one that isn't as functional. So its not about winning, its about giving us the best product available NOW, and unfortunately iOS6 does not provide that.

2) The next 6mo Apple will improve. That is true. But to claim it is "tremendous" is pure speculation that isnt actually built on anything.

3) Transit isnt an easy problem to overcome. We had integrated transit so "3rd party rushing in to solve transit" is a workaround but not a solution.

4) Apple can fix things gradually is true but its also a deflection. Yes, they WILL fix things gradually but that is not an excuse for having a gen6 OS that downgrades an important feature.

.

heh heh,

on point 1) how many times do you or anyone want to rehash the issue??? Tim Cook already apologize for it.. Should he do it one more time? five more times? 10 more times or every time someone talk about Apple map, you want to remind people this Apple decision?

2) yes it is my speculation. And my speculation is based on my 20+ years of software engineer experience. There is a lot of things work right in the Apple map and there is a lot of things that does not work right. But fixing problem like POI error are accumulative. The map will incrementally work better for more people. If you follow the map thread, there are people that can use the map today already and see no problem. And there are a lot more people who think map are not useful and downright dangerous. But as the wrong location get fix, the map will become much more useful and the improvement will be very noticeable in a few months. With Cook apology, this just become Apple number project and I have no doubt that they will put all the resource that can help into the map area.

3) I am not sure I understand what you meant. Transit map is a tough problem if only one company tackle the issue. But Apple just open up the market for transit apps and 3rd party app developer can make a go for the problem. In 6 months, I think we will see more transit map available all over the world. That is just capitalism at work. If you are an IOS developer and know anything about transit schedule, wouldn't you take a crack at the problem and see if you can make some money out of it?

4) errr... this is the same as point 1 right? how many time do you need Apple to say sorry before you can move on??? A real user who has real problem with IOS map would have done one of the two things. a) find an alternative solution within IOS or b) get an Android device and get the google map that they desperately need. They won't hop of Apple mistake forever and keep reminding each other that Apple made that mistake. That is just a big waste of time.

I can understand people want to dump on Apple in the "disaster map" thread. It was a disaster decision. But this is a thread about IOS map improvement. What does the disaster decision made has anything to do with the current improvement. I am interested in know what improvement people are seeing with the map and I have zero interest in the discussion on why Apple do what they did. There are threads already rehash why the decision was wrong to the n+1 times... Do you need to see a therapist before you can move on and let the rest of us talk about what improvement Apple made on the map issue?

For me an apology is not good enough. I'm not going to be happy until I have a Google maps app...which may unfortunately involve switching to a different device. For now, I have avoided upgrading to iOS 6 on my phone. I have it on my iPad since I don't need maps there.

i think Maps works fine, i've been trying to make it act wrong by using it in my area and making wrong turns to see if it would make a mistake or get me lost. I think the recalculation of a route is fast after making a wrong turn, its way faster than my TomTom in recalculating a route.

Im sure Apple is working on fixes and updates will come soon. If your having a problem with Maps, use Waze or Map Quest or Google until the fixes come, no big deal, make adjustments until then.

I was wondering who would be the first apologist to try and make up an excuse as to why the Apple version is better. To justify the abysmal Apple Map app.

Tell me, do you drive, or does your mother drive you everywhere,
Anybody with any kind of reasoning would have no problem understanding the map. It's not complex at all. In fact, it's quite clear.
Or is the 3 color coding scheme to difficult for you to grasp.

Let me explain it.

Red = Bad traffic. Stay away.
Orange = okay traffic.
Green = hardly any traffic at all.

Wow. That's complex.

It has to download 3 times as much data though.

I do drive yes. I recently used Apple maps to get to Liverpool Cruise Terminal and it told me the road I planned to use was closed so I had take an alternative route.

It may not have all traffic data yet but at least give it until the end of October to improve.

It's probably because there's three times as much data available in the form of POIs.

As more information is added to Apple Maps, data consumption will increase.

I live in an area of the Northeast where the same road often goes through several cities, and the numbers get reused. So, you can't just put things on a map based on the number, you have to use the city, as well. Apple didn't get this, so I have several things that are showing as on my block that are actually 1-2 cities away (I would be thrilled if they were on my block). They haven't improved since launch.

So if there is the same street name in several cities and you only provide a street name and a house number, how the hell is Maps supposed to magically know which of the cities you mean??

Um, no, that's not what I'm saying. I provided the street name, house number, and city. It has that location (my house) in the right place, but it shows several things as being 1/2 block from my house (when you zoom in) which are actually 1-2 cities away.

So, I live in X city, but they have overlaid Y city and Z city on top of X in some spots. Does that make more sense?

I meant just the traffic data. Google has download data for all roads, whereas Apple just downloads the traffic problems alone.

Ahh got ya.

Apple is not showing traffic problems for some of London's busiest roads though. :(

I'm seeing some more new POIs today.

Good to hear! Are you in the US or somewhere else?

I haven't seen anyone from the UK say they're seeing more POIs yet, unless I'm not looking hard enough.

Nope. No improvements that make it even close to the usability of Google Maps.
Adding better, pretty pictures in fly over mode, does not improve functionality.

You couldn't possibly be serious.

This is like waking up at the hospital and having the doctor say, "We removed your functioning kidney and replaced it. We apologize. It turns out the one we put in isnt ready but with weekly dialysis and a lot of patience we may get it to function similarly to your working kidney that we have right here in this icebox."

The solution is as simple as it gets. The old product worked, the new one still isn't ready so bring back what works. And if you think a flimsy apology (or a hundred more) is enough then you have no idea what "apology" or "solution" actually means.

BTW. Agian, I use Maps and like it. I'm just sick of people giving crap to every Zune or Android 1.0 product that comes to market but then looking the other way when it comes to Apples mistakes.

UK. Number of POIs in my hometown has doubled over the weekend. Majority are still in slightly wrong places but I've reported all the correct positions.

Geolocation as the default city. If you want another city you specify it. Problem solved.

I've reported about 30 problems but can't see that any have been fixed yet.

I live in a small city in the East Midlands, but a lot of the problems I've reported are in villages rather than in the city centre, so I know such issues probably aren't high on Apple's priority list (or they're not getting enough reports to be able to confirm what I'm saying).

A few more POIs have just appeared since my last post.

Check in a few minutes if they're still there.

Some extra POIs popped up on my maps earlier then disappeared subsequently, which is good because they definitely didn't exist where maps said they did!

And that is perfectly o.k. After all we are the consumer, if we are not happy with Apple product, we won't buy it. What is not o.k. is that this is a thread about whether Apple map is improved. Keep repeating the same point that Apple made a mistake in IOS 6 map decision does not help anyone nor you.

Yes, they are still there and reasonably accurate, although I think a few are under new names now.
