This crap has totally ruined my "new iphone experience."

And google's excuse for ****ing me over like this is that it will enable them to "make more beautiful products"... Seriously?

Actually, I think it's more microsoft's fault? Active sync is proprietary technology and Google (and anyone that uses it) had to pay Microsoft royalties to use it. Google didn't want to pay and opted for a differ standard.

I found that you can get a free account at outlook.com which works with push and lets you delete an email on one device and have it instantly deleted on others (and the main website).

I hate the idea of having to delete every email three times - on my ipad, my iphone, and in outlook on my PC. Though my iPad still works since I had it before Jan 30. But I like the email (my gmail accounts) being synced between my iphone and ipad. This ability has been stolen from me.

I'd pay $50 a year to keep doing it. It says something about that for business customers. I don't have a business acct with gmail and i don't see where to get that.

Dude, use the gmail app. It is WAY better than the stock mail app.

If you really really can't stomach that, you've been given the answer MULTIPLE times. Set up gmail via imap and use the gmail app for push notifications only.

I added my gmail account and only synced my calendar. Then I forwarded all my gmail to my iCloud and told google to mark all my email as read in regular gmail. Can't delete email on both but it doesn't bother me that much.

This has completely ruined my day. I was so excited about my new iPhone and now i'm ****ing pissed off and feel pure disappointment. My software was sabotaged, plain and simple.

Wow must be tough to have such horrible problems

This is more then just Googles fault. They basically didn't want to pay so you could have a free service anymore.

You have to admit it's pretty petty to complain about free services not working the way you want them too wouldn't you agree?

Dozens of google apps in the App Store for free even mail that will do what you want. How many Apple apps are in the google store? Zero. I don't see Android users complaining. Lol Apple barely gives free services to iOS device owners. :)

I use this solution as well, but via outlook.com. With this method, I can send and receive push gmail from the stock iphone mail app. All my sent email is logged in my gmail account as well. This is the closest you can get to an exchange setup without using a 3rd party app on your phone or a paid service.

My advice from a data security standpoint is to begin transitioning away from Google. I won't post about it again, but I do not believe you can trust Google. That's just my opinion. I'll shut up now. :)

Google has no choice but to be on the iOS platform, and they moment they charge for an app their user base will shrink significantly. Meanwhile Apple doesn't need to be on other platforms to make money.

Also, pretty much all Apple apps excluding Garageband are now free for new iOS device owners henceforth.

Personally i'd have gone all in with iCloud but reality is Google syncing APIs are widely recognized. I was gonna go the Outlook route too but they don't support Contact pictures. So i'm using Google CalDAV/CardDAV and iCloud for emails.

The Gmail App uses imap-idle (or imap push) to get push email.

OP, instead of being disappointed with Goggle for dropping exchange activesync support, you should be asking why Apple's ios mail does not support imap-idle?

BTW, imap-idle is far more efficient than exchange active-sync, and uses less data for push notifications. This is good especially for those with a smaller data plan.

My experience seems similar in a way to the originator of this post. I use Gmail and have a MacBook Pro (OS 10.8.5), iPhone 4s (iOS 7) and an iPadmini (iOS 7). Mail works perfectly with Gmail on the MacBook and iPhone. I was given the iPad for Christmas and initially all worked well there too. Then on 13th Jan I started getting the message "imap.gmail.com is not responding". According to Mail on the iPad, my emails have not been updated since 13th Jan but apart from the fact that I have to dismiss that notice every time I look for new emails, the emails do in fact arrive safely and all devices are synced since deleting an email on one device, removes it from the others also.
So far the bother of deleting the spurious notice has not caused me to explore other options.

Am I right in thinking you have to enable IMAP through Gmail settings on the web to get this to work. Could that be the issue with deleting the same message in multiple places?

I agree 100%. I have used Exchange Gmail since owning an iPhone 3G and loved how it worked. Now, I have to use the Gmail App / Mail combo, which is OK, but not as good as push GMail from exchange. Now, only my iPad mini has Exchange Gmail. Sad days.
