I checked my status and I bought the iPhone 3G on 7/11/08, my account is eligible for an upgrade on 12/16/2009. I'm planning on getting myself the newer iPhone for Christmas then, if it is out by that time.

Unless it comes out with some really really must have new features this summer, I can wait until Christmas to get it.

It sounds like you are a good customer of AT&T. Some qualified customers are eligible for equipment upgrades every 12 months.

It is based on several factors: MRC, LTV, and some company associations. So I would guess that you are spending $99 or more per month on your primary line of service on your AT&T Account. :D

Note: The Monthly Recurring Cost (MRC) is based on a three month average of your rate plan plus selected data features.

I just bought my iPhone 3g on 3/6/09 and the web says that I'm eligable for upgrade on 3/7/10. So maybe there is something to that. I pay over 100 a month on my plan, but then I have my wife's iPhone and my daughters phone on the plan also. I got my wife's iPhone on 11/16/08 and it says she can't get one till 7/9/10. I thought that was strange myself. OH and I have been with at&t for about 5 yrs I think.

Fortunately I have a buddy that works at the ATT experience store and he could probably help me out with my upgrade. I got the 3G a week after it came out. Regardless of what the price is going to be or what our current upgrade situation is, we'll probably buy since we're in love with the iPhone!!

No that sounds correct. The upgrade eligiblity is based on your rate plan on a per line basis, so you get the earlier upgrade on the your primary line and the add-a-lines get the normal 18-24 month calculation based on their MRC.

I'm also eligible for an upgrade on July 12, 2009...so I will definitely be grabbing the new iPhone. I'm sure the only reason I'm getting an early upgrade is my $350 a month phone bill.

I'm sort of very iffy about this. It made sense for iPhone 1 buyers to get a subsisized price for the 3G since they bought their phones full-price, but I'm not really sure what will happen this time around. I doubt it'll be $600/$700, but even so, $400 is a little expensive for me and I would rather just chip in that money to save up for a Macbook or something along the lines.
If it's under $400, I'll most likely pick it up, though. I looooove early-adopting

I don't plan on buying the new iPhone, but I do hope AT&T offers a mid-level pricing for early upgrades. Mainly, because I don't want to hear people bitching on the boards about the price of the new phone.

It would be awesome if they allow the current 3g owners to upgrade to the new one at the subsidized price. I sold my original iPhone for $300 and got my iPhone 3g for $199. I also used the refund that I got from apple after they dropped the prices of the original iphone, so upgrading was a no brainer. I dunno if the iPhone 3g will have high resale since there are so many unlocked ones out there but if I can get a good price for mine I might upgrade to the new one this summer.

Edit: Damn unlocked iphones are still going for a lot. If AT&T offers the new one at a subsidized price I will jump on it.

I really wonder if that is going to happen.

I think they will hold you to the contract and only allow upgrades once you approach the end of your 18/24 months…

But who knows.
It may work out as you think.

Is the data plan going to be increased again or stay at $30?

Hang on, Marty! Lemme jump in the DeLorean and find out!

I paid $600 for my first iPhone. I'll do it again in a heartbeat for the next one. As far as I'm concerned, the 3G was too cheap anyway.

I agree, ihave had so many quality control related issues, as have many others. I believe the original iPhone was of much better build quality? I'm sure the 'cheaper' build and issues(light leaks, dust under the screen etc etc) where down to Apple having to cut costs. How much was the original iPhone? I remember at the time thinking it was quite a reasonable price. So, if they produce it to the quality of the first iPhone and make it unsubsidised I'd be happy! Apple products are expensive, but you pay for a quality solid product. The iPhone 3G was different in that respect.

...And it was AT&T who paid your subsidy, not Apple.
But what if AT&T does start allowing existing upgrade-ineligible customers to purchase iPhones at full retail as has been rumoured recently?

Apple might then choose to offer existing customers a "loyalty" manufacturer's rebate equal to some portion (or all) of the difference between AT&T's full retail price and the price they would have paid for a subsidized version.

Not saying it's likely or anything. Just putting it out there that it's certainly not entirely up to AT&T's discretion.

Being the primary on a family plan I believe they are letting me upgrade at 12 months. If not I'll just cancel and pay the ETF then buy the new one on a two-year.

Hrm. I'm upgrade eligible right now. Signed up for AT&T on 10/15/08, and now since my iPhone 3G was stolen I'm taking advantage of that upgrade eligibility and getting a 3G for $400. So, I have the option to upgrade only 5 months into the plan.

Umm... if you're paying $400 for a new iPhone, then you're NOT upgrade eligible. That's the price for people who aren't eligible to upgrade. It would be $200 if you were upgrade-eligible.

And the new one is going to be too expensive or something?? Quite comical.

I work at an AT&T retailer and was told by our area AT&T rep that they will allow you to upgrade and iPhone 3G for an new iPhone when they come out. They won't let you change to another phone until your 18 months is up though. I purchased my back in July when it came out and definately will upgrade.

As far as I know the 3G was a price increase. 599/699 w/o contract (unsub) vs 399/499 w/o contract (unsub).
