Because I love trolling corporate America.

Get away with what you can.

That being said, I have purchased all of my music legally on iTunes...but I do have HandyLight for tethering.
I already pay AT&T enough ;]

EDIT 2: Also, I justify free tethering by the fact that there is no difference in the data usage if I'm browsing on my phone or using it to browse on my computer.

I go to confession immediately after I am done tethering every time. Jesus will forgive me.

I'm just wondering who in their right mind would pay AT&T again to use data that they've already paid for. And if that data's already paid for, why the hell does it matter to AT&T how that data is used?

So how do you justify to your self stealing?

How do YOU justify mislabeling thousands of people as thieves on public forums? Why don't you go make something of your life and stop worrying so much about what others do.

Because thats how much it costs. Thats the price that they are charging for it. Its simply illegal and hurts the vendor and skews our market. It does matter because those two different types of data use up different chunks of bandwith on their network which doesn't have the unlimited capacity of a hard line so the amount matters somewhat and thats why they are two different prices. One for 3G and one for tethering to a laptop or computer that is more likely to use more bandwidth.

i just sit here and laugh at all you AT&T people, hahaha Rogers lets us tether for free! hah!! Therefore one could say I do not need justification.

One could also say that America needs a better cellular network provider.

...yeah keep laughin' wiseguy.

I don't see anything wrong with tethering for free. AT&T's policy to charge for tethering is equivalent to your ISP saying that you can only browse the web on your iPhone with the standard service, but if you want to browse the web on your laptop/desktop that would be an additional fee even though you are using the same data that would be used while browsing on the iPhone. You've already bought the data you should be able to use it however you like.

Imagine if you bought a loaf of bread, but were told that you could only use it for toast unless you paid an additional fee. IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE TO DO THAT!!! And that is exactly what AT&T is doing by saying that you can only use the data on your iPhone and that if you want to use it on your computer through your iPhone you have to pay extra.

Thanks for the explanation. The extra charge makes more sense now, though I'd still never pay for it. I think I tethered a laptop to my old Sprint Samsung Instinct once to see how it works, and haven't had to tether since.

Where do you most of you guys who tether use it the most? Airports? On the road?

I have no problem being public about this: If I purchase an iPhone or iPad app that has a version specific to the other platform, I'll pirate the other. So, if I buy Hero of Sparta on the iPhone, I'll pirate Hero of Sparta 2 HD. Why is that justified? I can already play Hero of Sparta 2 with the same quality textures as the HD version on my iPhone 4. I can also play Hero of Sparta 2 on my iPad at 480x320 without any small iPad optimizations. I usually just want to try the other version to see what it's like. If I already purchase the game once, and the biggest change going to the iPad version is that the game is played at the iPad's native resolution, which is simple to do. I even already paid for the higher quality textures because many iPhone 4 apps include them.

I could see buying a game twice for both platforms if the game is significantly different on the other platform or I just really like game and want to support it twice.

I honestly never thought about having to justify it.
As far as apps go, I would pirate the heck out of them if I was the only iphone user in the house. With three of us on iPhones it's far easier to just buy the apps so we can all share. Plus is far less maintenance for me.
Music, well some is bought, some already bought and......

Number 8: Thou Shalt Not STEAL

LOL jkjk.
I don't do it but I don't care for those who do. It's their device and I'd rather them steal data then to rob a bank/rob an elderly. Even though, I really dislike it when people steal music. . . but that's a different thread

If the iPhone had a dumbed down mobile browser this would make sense, but it doesn't. Going to www.apple.com on the iPhone uses the exact same amount of data and bandwidth as going to www.apple.com on my MacBook Pro. They load the EXACT same webpage. This is true for most websites, except those with built-in Flash animation or games (which the iPhone obviously doesn't load).

I understand that Ill get attacked for this but Im reading all these ways to tether for free, jailbreak for this or that. Im just curious how you justify stealing a service from a company just because you feel that you are entitled to it for what ever reason. If the company is such a rip off, why dont you take your business elsewhere.
Now I completely understand jail breaking to some degree, but to do it to steal services from a company is no different than somebody than tapping into your house for free cable or wifi, something like that. You cant tell me you wouldnt be mad if a year down the road someone did this to you and they got free service off you while they you payed for it. How are you any different than the people that pay ATT for tethering honestly while you steal it?

I dont like the way ATT has it set up, but is is their company. And just because I feel they should give a service like tethering for free, doesnt mean they have to. So flame away and justify taking a service like tethering for free when there are people out there that pay for it honestly.

These phone companies sure give other countries things for free that we dont get and we pay more to get less so as far as im concerned, sure it is their company and they do what they want, and it is MY PHONE and ill do what i want.
Why should Canada and others get an unlocked phone to use on any network? Or free tethering? Because their government says FU, this is how it will be. Play along or get out! Is the reason why iPhones are unlocked there.
Canada dont pay a monthly fee for DirecTV either from what i understand. They buy the equipment and thats it.

Now i jailbreak to make my phone work better for me. I dont use tethering and i can also try out Apps that way and if i like it , ill pay but there is one App that is $900 ( it was an app that you can tap into security camera's w/ your phone) and if it sucked, you are out of luck. I tried it and it didnt work right for me but the there was a lot of setup and i didnt have a big use for it so i deleted it.
Is it fair to pay $900 and get stuck with no refund?

Shouldn't we consider mathematical averages?

Well, technically I'm not stealing anything. I'm lame and run my iPhone on a GoPhone plan and tethering isn't even offered, so technically I couldn't pay for it if I didn't want to. Although, I would definitely not pay $20 extra just to share the same amount of data I have on my iPhone to my computer, ****** that. That is in no way ethical or fair to the end user to have to pay for something they technically already have.

EDIT: Oh, and for things with MyWi and My3G, we aren't stealing anything. We are expanding the features of the phone and adding in unproved ones.

I go to confession immediately after I am done tethering every time. Jesus will forgive me.

I lol'd. A lot.

Sounds like a guilty conscious to me. Tell me you called ATT and told them that you are tethering with out paying them and its wrong for them to charge for it. If you cant do that, then your stealing because you know its wrong.

Yeah, he's surely going to do that because some anonymous guy on a message board challenged him to.

And what is the point of this thread? A thinly veiled attempt to chastise and preach?

If only people cared this much about illegally downloading of music. . .

+ 1 You bought the lulz for some reason.

He's not just some anonymous guy in a thread, he's the voice of reason. Lamarak is right, we should't steal from AT&T and those of us that do should probably admit we are wrong. He speaks for many of us who feel this way...

This may have been stated before, but it is our data and we should be able to chose what to do with it. It is only considered stealing if we are using up more data than we have purchased. What, would you think it is fair if AT&T charged us for using the data on certain apps such as Facebook? OR how about if your ISP provider charged you for sharing your internet connection via Wi-Fi or to more than one computer?

Nope, he's just an anonymous guy in a thread.

The one thing that I really think makes people jailbreak to tether is the fact that as far as I know, if you add tethering, AT&T considers it a change to your data plan & you will lose your unlimited data palm, which is not an option for me and many others. I pay AT&T $90 a month for data, I'll do what I want with it. I have unlimited plans on my iPhone 4 & my wifes as well as on my 3G iPad, so I should pay them 60 more, & lose my data plan... No thank you... Just saying... They are entitled to make money, yes.... But enough is enough...
