I thought there would be such option when the pre-orders started last night.

Obviously I was wrong.

Does that mean I'll have to stand in line on 9/25 in order to join the program?

I'm so confused.

Apparently you have to do one of Apples reservations to purchase at a store, and then the program will be an option there.

Yes, this can only be done in-store. You basically have to pre-order for in-store pickup and/or go to the store and arrange to purchase under the upgrade plan - in person.
