Now that it's out and y'all have had some time with it, how is it?

I'm torn between a Series 8 at $225 and a Series 9 at $385. Talk me out of it đź«

I am waiting for Spotify to implement it to properly change songs. If I have to open Now Playing, might as well just skip the song with the other hand while at it.

I can't use it, but I didn't expect to be able to with my hands the way they are. No problem, I think it looks stupid when people use it. :)

While your first sentence is incorrect, your 2nd one is absolutely correct
Nope, first sentence is correct.
Accessibility -> Assistive Touch -> Hand Gestures -> Double Tap set to Tap.
Now, this will not allow all the touches the Double Tap on the Series 9 watch allows....but it gets you 90% of them.
I use this all the time as my job and hobbies means I often have messy/dirty hands. I can do the Double Pinch and clear most notifications or get to a response area on the notification. It doesn't do all the things the Series 9 Double Tap action does, but it does get you close.....which is what I said.

see below double tap features for AW9/U2 and tell me how you match that 90% please

  • Opening the Smart Stack from any watch face and scrolling through widgets in the stack.
  • Answering and ending phone calls.
  • Viewing a message from a notification, scrolling through longer notifications with an additional double tap, replying using dictation, and sending a message.
  • Pausing, resuming, and ending a timer.
  • Stopping and resuming a stopwatch.
  • Snoozing an alarm.
  • Playing and pausing music, podcasts, and audiobooks.
  • Switching to the new Elevation view in the Compass app.
  • Taking an iPhone photo with the Camera Remote in the Camera app.
  • Starting or stopping automatic Workout reminders.
  • Performing the primary action from notifications, such as replying to an incoming message from a messaging app and snoozing reminders — including from third parties.

It allows me to do these with a double tap:
  • Stopping and resuming a stopwatch.
  • Snoozing an alarm.

I have not tested some of the others, but these work.
So, 55% of the list above. :) Maybe more if I tested some of the others.....so maybe not 90%, but still a lot.

Also, if you really want to do more. you can customize a single tap, clench of fist, and double clench.....so you could do even more with one hand.....but the tap action I have is enough for me.

And, I had this setup before the big Series 9 announcement....so it felt really underwhelming.....

It works, but it’s very limited even compared to the old one from accessibility settings. For instance, it can’t dismiss multiple notifications.

I wish there was an option to open the notification shade and scroll through notifications using double tap - it’s is much more useful than scrolling through widgets.

On my S9 it does nothing on Notifications. I get the hand shaking no. Main thing it works well on is opening the smart stack and scrolling that. Main thing I wanted it for was workouts and that doesn't work. Camera thing doesn't work either. Overall pretty disappointed.

I just got an automatic “it looks like you are working out” and I pulled off a glove to tap the button. It never occurred to me to try the double-tap gesture. Maybe next time. No muscle memory yet.

So I didn’t think of using double-tap for the first mile of my walk with gloves on. But on the return trip, after this thread, I tried it and it worked. No need to take off my gloves. Neat.

Ok it was a walk to the bar and back. It still counts as 2 miles (second leg was 1.125 miles, first leg was 1.1 miles. Not sure why they were different on the same path 🤣).

I tried it once right after the update. It worked as expected. Then I promptly forgot it existed.

This exactly. Couldn’t wait to update the watch to use it. Used it the first day and haven’t used it since. I keep forgetting to try it while on a call.

For me it works as expected, but it is less useful than expected.
It can be quite neat at times, if you own the Series 9 anyway and remember to use the gesture.
But paying for it to get it, I would say no.

my neighbor stated that these feature took him an hour to set up.
I just received a m1 MacMini that needs tinkering first.

im glad this thread is here, I will set up the watch for pinch
due to road cycling need 2 hands at times.
