It allows me to do these with a double tap:

.....Also, if you really want to do more. you can customize a single tap, clench of fist, and double clench.....so you could do even more with one hand.....but the tap action I have is enough for me.

Hi RSday,

I can't find the options for '...a single tap, clench of fist, and double clench...'

Can you advise where they are?

What version of IOS/watchOS are you? perhaps its that?

Hope you can advise!

Regards
Martin

I set it up on the iPhone Watch app.
In the app....Accessibility -> Assistive Touch -> Hand Gestures
From there, you can set the 4 different gestures up for what action they perform.
I only use the double tap action. I have it set to "tap"

I enabled accessibility gestures on my AW8. Seems for work pretty well

wow, the above default gestures works flawlessly across the complications on my main face

...thats incredible use of tech

The problem is - I'm actually struggling to find use for it, where it is actually easier to do my actions by saying 'hey siri'

E.g. For my simple ' send text' requests etc.

Here is a possible useful use:

Is it more battery efficient to run Siri this way, using taps, instead of having the watch listening for the words 'hey Siri' all day

So I didn’t think of using double-tap for the first mile of my walk with gloves on. But on the return trip, after this thread, I tried it and it worked. No need to take off my gloves. Neat.

Ok it was a walk to the bar and back. It still counts as 2 miles (second leg was 1.125 miles, first leg was 1.1 miles. Not sure why they were different on the same path 🤣).
The difference in your walk to the bar and the walk home is staggering.

While I was baking bread this morning, my wife sent me a message. I could respond by double pinching, dictating an answer and double pinching again to send it. This was pretty neat and worked twice in a row.

Being carried out of the bar does tend to affect my workout app mileage.

Hi Coltaine,

Now that would be useful!

in my case, it would normally be cutting up raw meat etc. - Sods law of timing.

Dictating the answer - is that using the standard gestures, and you just follow the on screen instructions?
Or did you have to play around with the settings?

see below double tap features for AW9/U2 and tell me how you match that 90% please

  • Opening the Smart Stack from any watch face and scrolling through widgets in the stack.
  • Answering and ending phone calls.
  • Viewing a message from a notification, scrolling through longer notifications with an additional double tap, replying using dictation, and sending a message.
  • Pausing, resuming, and ending a timer.
  • Stopping and resuming a stopwatch.
  • Snoozing an alarm.
  • Playing and pausing music, podcasts, and audiobooks.
  • Switching to the new Elevation view in the Compass app.
  • Taking an iPhone photo with the Camera Remote in the Camera app.
  • Starting or stopping automatic Workout reminders.
  • Performing the primary action from notifications, such as replying to an incoming message from a messaging app and snoozing reminders — including from third parties.
Geez. Let it go.

If anyone responded to my wife by double pinching, she'd slap them. Ba-dum-bum.

The answer may be different on the newest watches. The double pinch gesture on the series 9 and ultra 2 are implemented in the new neural engine chip, as opposed the assistive touch double pinch on the older watches that implemented in software on the main processor. I'm guessing that the reason the assistive touch feature is disabled by default is that it uses a lot of battery.

I didn't adjust any settings.
Message came in on the Apple Watch, I had my hands full of bread dough, so without thinking much, I did the double pinch/tap gesture, which sent me strait to the dialog, where I could dictate my answer, another double pinch/tap and the reply was out.
That was really one of the moments, where I thought: woah, that's cool!
Worked out of the box, worked like a charm.

You don’t have to say hey siri you can just lift your watch to your mouth and talk.

Hi matrix,

I just tried it a couple times, and it’s not working.

When I raise the watch and say hey Siri, it does send a text.

Is there a setting I need to set?

I’m on the latest version of iOS 16, and watch OS9.

The double pinch is not near as handy as I thought it would be. When I use it to end a timer, it really only pauses it so it re-alarms again. Apple needs to give us some controls so we can customize it as the users wants.

In my experience it works 30% of the time … so like most Siri related things, it’s too frustrating to try more than once in a while. For every one time I get it to work, there are several tries where it fails.

Definitely agree. I use the stopwatch a lot and that would be nice.

Fantastic, I'll keep the gesture on standard then.

Had a wow moment with ending a few calls today, double pinch - worked fine each time :)

Hi M,

Many thanks for the heads up on this function.

I found the setting in the end.

I must be lucky guys - it all works 90% / 100% of the time for me.

Too good in fact

I remember now:
- without 'Hey Siri' - the watch kept talking back at me in the middle my of conversations with people etc.
- I had to turn that feature off ages ago! 🤣

oh well... 'Hey Siri...' It is from now on - again!

Cheers
Martin

Yep, you’re right. No need for details, let’s just dumb it down and say that they’re the same. Accessibility and Double Tap are the same. Watch S8 and Watch S9 are the same. Watch S6 to S9 are even the same. Heck, Watch S0 to S9 are the same. If you forego the details, the details don’t matter.

Hi,

Siri will only be activated when your watch is lifted up close to your mouth. You don't have to be concerned about she's listening to you - or talking back - all the time. Hope this helps.
