I do have one potentially significant problem at hand - I am currently backing up my laptop data and the portable is in NTFS...will the MB read it so I can get the data off? If not - how can I?

The MB will read it, but won't be able to write to it. If you have no files larger than 4GB, I would suggest formatting the drive FAT32 if you need read and write access to it from your MB. Or you can get 3rd party programs to allow your MB to write to an NTFS drive.

Edit: For clarification, OS X will read NTFS, just not write to it without the help of a third party program.

They are all the same, they are all garbage. I have seen brand new MacBooks and old MacBooks and first-batch unibody MacBooks. All of their screens suffer from the same problem. Whether or not you can see the problem, I do not know. But judging by your statement here with "new, improved," I am inclined to believe that you, too, are unable to see what is wrong with the displays.
All of the issues you referred to have been fixed with the new screen.

I actually upgraded my unibody MacBook to a Pro. I know exactly what you're referring to, and it's been fixed.
