:D

That exact issue happened to an ACD I know in 2016, after 13 years of use.

I prefer the aluminum variants for obvious reasons.
I have mine shoved up against something. For whatever reason Apple decided that angling them was perfect. I prefer mine more vertical. One of these days when I have some money the desk(s) these sit on will be designed so the arm is higher than the base of the display, forcing it to be more vertical.

So far though, none of them have broken.

EDIT: Since we're showing displays… :D

Two 17" Studio Displays and one 20" Cinema Display.

Apart from the Dr Bott adapter, there seemed to be another ADC converter on the market in the US by Gefen. The company still exists today. This splitter box allowed you to run two ACDs from one ADC graphics card port.

According to this Macworld article, Gefen were also supposed to have brought out a VGA/DVI to ADC converter box but I don't know if this ever saw the light of day

Finally, does anyone remember the cloney Formac LCD displays? This one looks like it has a powered DVI cable on it but I wondered if they also did ADC versions. I was never keen on the "hipster ear" feet, which seemed overlarge and inelegant.

Right after I got my 17" Studio Display, I realized that its arm is also failing and won't prop itself up, so it is permanently at a far-back angle, very opposite to how it should be. :p It still works nice otherwise. I should really get myself a setup to make it less awkward on a desk. Right now it's actually sitting on top of my G3/G4s on the floor, so it's a moderate viewing angle from sitting in a chair, I guess. :p

@Adamscomputerrepair Be sure to show up photos of it up and running when you get the adapter. :)

You bet. There’s a computer guy in Tennessee I’m going to check first on Saturday (because he’s always had what I needed) but should he not have the adapter, I’ll order it from eBay and pray to God USPS is gentle.

Both screens are confined to displaying the same image though.

As far as VGA to ADC conversion goes, there's the DVIator's brother, aptly named VGAtor.

As for these Formac thingies: the Radius Artica (re-badged/-coloured SGI 1600SW) is much nicer IMHO. 1600×1024 on 17.3 inches = 110 ppi. Not bad for 1998 :) I can't stand the 22in ACD's 86 ppi - horribly grainy.

I’ll stick to DVI lol. I haven’t used anything VGA in 5 years with the exception of hooking my G3 to an external monitor to say I could.

Don't count on it. They wrecked the aluminum handles / housing on a Power Mac G5 I ordered.

I couldn't tell you my anger that day.

Been there. The damage was so bad in my case that I took it back and collected its replacement personally. Shipping has its limits.

I have 4 of the 23" ones, and at one time was running two of them off my main desktop(a dual 2.7 G5 for a while, now a Mac Pro 5,1). I got tired of color accuracy issues, and then one of them just died one day. I swapped it out, but ended up buying a 27" Cinema. I'm planning on swapping the second out for another 27" Cinema in due time, as the 23" really looks bad next to it.

They do have their place, and I have a bunch in all sizes kicking around.

FWIW, my favorite ADC display is the 17" CRT. Unfortunately, the Apple A1006 doesn't work with it, although supposedly the Dr. Bott adapter does.

As for A1006-when I first got into PPC Macs they were still regularly trading for $100. I started seeing them come down, and have bought one or two displays over the years that included one for well under that. I've also picked them up for ~$20-30.
